I want to see them explore Mumm-ras origin. Third earth clearly isn’t our earth in the future in this continuity , and Mumm-ras not native to the planet anymore so than the Thundercats. Plus exploring his origin could open the door to learning what homeworld or worlds all the animals Mumm-ra enslaved came from.Not to mention the stones of power…
Good point. In the comic releases they went into his background and it was pretty interesting, but this show is a whole new game! The tech is really interesting in how its woven with him. And am I the only one wanting more Tygus? <3
I’m kinda curious too as to Mumm-ra’s origins, however it may not be in the cards. As a graduate in english comp literature I know a lot of times when you learn too much about a villian a sense of familiarity becomes sympathy or understanding, we are meant to believe and know Mumm-ra is pure evil and what writers have found is a lot of times when the villian’s backstory is given they become less threatening and even accidently humanized when we know why they’ve done something or become something, going down that road of experiences with them builds a connection and its harder to hate them usually, it’s a risky place for a writer to go without losing what we are supposed to feel for the villian and that’s that the villian is evil. Again good backstory could work but its a risky thing that involves very skilled writing. But anything is possible in this new series!
Tygrastripes… I’m surprised to see that there is another graduate comp. lit student on these forums. I agree with your comments that revealing Mummra’s origins is quite risky because sometimes what we don’t know makes a villain more intimidating. For example, John Carpenter’s Halloween was so effective because we barely know anything about Michael’s character which really makes him quite intimidating, but if one carefully looks at the clues, the motive for his murders becomes clear. When Zombie remade the film, he got the audience to sympathize with Myers by including a back story and thus violated a fundamental rule of the horror. As a result, the remake completely is heavily criticized despite a strong box office performance. Anyway, the writers of the new Thundercats need to be very careful as you mention because they could inadvertently cause viewers to sympathize or see Mummra as less of a evil being.

I agree mate. Mumm-Ra and the Sword had always had my interest, origin wise. Now that we have explored Sword’s origin, which was a little too ordinary for me, I would very much love to see Mumm-Ra’s origin. The details of how he came into contact with technology, what brought him to accept it. Because this new Mumm-Ra is quite tech savvy, little odd seeing a decrepit old mummy using gadgets and vehicles. I’m surprised we didn’t even get to hear from the Spirits of Evil, I hope they cover that in the new season.
Though I’m also hoping they would introduce Silverhawks to us, merely as a bonus, would be great if they’re part of the story. And of course, as you said the story behind the stones.
I partly hope characters age a little through season 2.
But wouldn’t that work better in terms of story telling? Even if we do develop some sympathy for a villain, it’d be good to have a more complicated character. Sure we’re suppose to hate the baddie, but I personally like it when they make it hard for us to side with either side. For example in Beast Machines, the character of Megatron, despite being evil was given a lot more depth simply because we got to see things from his perspective. It got a little difficult to call him a cold, hearted villain even though he was because of the atrocities he committed. Just my opinion but it makes for an interesting villain when you do explore his background. All the more interesting when the hero is aware of it.
I see what you’re saying but I don’t really want any sympathy for Mumm-ra and I don’t think in this kind of storytelling we are meant to have any. This is a merciless killer of Thunderians and Claudus and many others who will stop at nothing to obtain unspeakable power. The writers want the stakes higher this time and the enemies deadlier and the best way to accomplish that is to diminish any qualities that would suggest the bad guy is humane. It lowers the level of danger when there’s that idea that the villian is anything other an unfazed by acts of mercy and unstoppable in their goal, there’s a whole theory on ‘when evil is just evil’ and I’ve gotta find it to share because its intriguing and works extremely well in horror movies and darker dramas. This is not to suggest the bad guy shouldn’t have motives (he definitely should and Mummra’s motive is power) but a detailed history is risky but can be done without a sympathy card its just harder without making them shallow or one-dimensional.
As long as they give the 3 new ThunderCats enough development, and bring back some old villains like Safari Joe, I’ll be happy.

I wonder if he was referring to “Legacy” there or if we haven’t seen the origin. We did learn that Mumm-Ra is from space and he “worked with” the Cats until the ship crashed, so that could be it.
I want Safari Joe to be a temporally displaced big game hunter who proceeds to hunt the entire planet.

Agreed. Let’s try to explore our main heroes first before bringing in new members. I hope for Tygra to grow into the person as he was in OS. His personality was simply charming. He’s probably my favorite Cat in OS.

I think the loyal cats to MummRa made their own city far far away form the ones loyal to Leo. So I speculate Pumyra and Bengali are apart of that group. Maybe that’s why we got a tidbit of Lynx-o and not the other two. I would also think this place is not a happy place were said cats live but a dark place. They live under a ruthless leader who needs to be dethroned. Enter Lion-o n company. He proves he is their King somehow…and I say somehow…and so forth…[/FONT]

I think there could have been a split about 2 or 3 generations after the ship crashed. I believe the mysterious Shadris or Clan Ocelot would fit in with my theory. :sneaky:
Yeah, I doubt all the cats would want to give up technology. I wonder what led to that descison in the first place?
I would also find this amazing if this is were Tygra came from. In theory, he might be from. 
I also wonder why they would abandon tech altogether…It’s not something you just lose…In reality the elders of the Thundercats may have seen it as a awful way of living and to much to do with MummRa so it disappeared..Along with the book and stones..
Could have been power corrupted MummRa and they didn’t want to see him or someone else rise to such power…in theory;)
Maybe one of the former lords of thundera was a cruel tyrant, using technology to subjugate his people,and his son had to overthrow him. Afterwards technology was banned by him.
