"Ramlak Rising" - Official Talkback Thread! (CONTAINS SPOILERS!)

Yeah, probably. The series really would have benefited from the entire episode revolving around escaping the ruins of Thundera. It probably won’t matter in a few episodes when the team is together, but right now it seems like an odd choice to leave so fast.

Maybe it’s just me, but Mumm-Ra seems much more competent this time around. In the old series he’d be on the verge of victory and then screw-up, or fail to take advantage of a really good opportunity. I don’t see this Mumm-Ra making those kind of mistakes.

I agree. Lion-O was born to privelage, raised in luxury, never experiencing want or need. I think him demonstrating a certain level of arrogance is believable for his position in life up to this point. He definitely has the attitude that he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. He was late to the ceremony in the premiere because he wanted to do what he wanted to do without concern for others.

Lion-O has always known his future was to be king. He never felt he needed to “prove” himself to be so, even though Jaga himself stated that the Sword would determine if he truly was worthy or not. I’m sure Lion-O passed that comment off without much thought.

Tygra, on the other hand, was adopted in. We don’t know yet how old he was or what his situation was before being adopted. But Tygra has always had to work for everything he wanted. He felt he had to work to earn his position and his father’s respect. He took none of it for granted, unlike his privelaged younger brother.

They could be viewed as Lion-O is the jerky big brother and Tygra is the cool big brother.

Only a tyrant in that one episode and he changed his tune by the end. He was driving on anger and bitterness from his father’s murder and the destruction of his kingdom. I don’t find his reponse to be unusual, just a form of grief. By the end, he was a little more back to himself again.

I do think Tygra and Cheetara should have been more involved than they were. When Lion-O was pulling the boat, I thought Tygra should have been over there pulling on the rope as well. It didn’t make sense to me why Tygra just stood there watching, unless Tygra was so ticked off with Lion-O’s behavior that he didn’t want to help.

You do have to respect him for respecting Lion-O’s title. He could fight against Lion-O if he wanted to, it’s not like there would be guards to lock him up for doing so.

The Tygra we saw in the first two episodes I wouldn’t exactly call a meek creature. He was without a doubt taking full advantage of the situtaion. Don’t forget Tygra was having great time helping daddy get a nice head of steam to direct at little brother. That yawn was well played.

Huh? I saw the very opposite here.

Again… Huh?

I don’t think we’ve seen or heard enough of Tygra to really know how Claudis treated him, ect. All we know for sure is Claudis put Tygra on equal postion at the table with Lion-O. And the scenes we’ve seen them together Claudis didn’t seem to have any issues with actually confiding to Tygra either. That could imply they might have been very close.

What title? About all they own now is the clothes on their backs. Their kingdom is in ruins with barely anything standing.

All speculation and guessing based on what we’ve seen so far.

Title - his title as Lord of the ThunderCats.

Right now that title simply means having a kingdom in ruins, one ever-living SOB wanting to make you his favorite pet, and legions of gun wielding lizards trying really hard to make you a lovely living room throw rug.

Not exactly a glowing endorsment for wanting the job right now.

Weither he wants the job or not he still has the title and he’s still Lord and King of the Thundercats.

He’s Lord of the ThunderCats whether he has a city full of people or just 2 others with him on a journey. It’s not a democracy.

I’m very aware of that.

I was making more the point of Tygra’s loyalty.

And don’t get me wrong the fact he’s swallowing the big brother right now and following Lion-O is giving him big points.

Here’s my point.

True loyalty is tested in the good times where there’s no common enemy to unit you. When your lands are over flowing with milk and honey and there’s actually something to fight over. Right now the kingdom is in ruins, they’ve both most likely got prices on their heads for being Claudis’s sons. Being loyal to Lion-O is easy right now. It’s the moments where the bad guys are whispering sweet nothings in your ear, telling you that you’d be a much better king where loyalty is really tested. And I think they are setting us up for us to see that with Tygra as part of his character growth.

I liked the episode. Even though the new series is only three episodes in, it looks very promising.

I definitely have complaints about this episode. I hated how rushed it felt. The montage was forced. They really should have spent an episode fleshing it out. I wouldn’t have minded watching an episode that was mostly the adults getting to know the kittens. Do some real interactions, get a feel for everybody’s character. It just seemed so forced to me.

The desert of sand and the beast within it was a nice touch. Like i’ve said before as long as the series feels slightly like it could be Conan i’ll have no real complaints. The OS always felt like a page out of Conan, and Lion-O was Conan in that senario. I’m a big Conan fan as well. In the OS Lion-O would do things like pick up a fallen tree and hurl it at Mumm-ra, Or a giant bone and make a bridge. Amazing feats of strength, coupled with bizarre unthought of beasts. The scenery in the world of third earth was always a high sci-fi fantasy setting. (much like Conan) So the desert fit the feel the series should have. I don’t buy that their so gullible as to wade out into sandwaters to eat a random buffet of fresh fruit, even if Cheetara’s after thought was “i wonder where it came from” It’s not like they were starving, Cheetara said they were “almost” out of food. Not out of food. They at least should still have had rational heads on their shoulders. Maybe the kids wading out, but Tyrgra and Cheetara? I don’t buy it. If they want me to believe that the group is that naive they should have stretched out that montage so i could see for myself how inexperienced they all are with the outside world. Again, I feel the first half was too forced, making the second half not so believable.

As for the second half, I didn’t like Will’s scream as he was caught by the fishing net, seemed a little forced to me. He’ll warm up into character though, i’m sure. He’s always done great work in the past. After that scene i’ve no complaints, it all played out very thundercat like. I mean I could complain that Lion-O didn’t actually see the kittens taking care of themselves, but he didn’t have to rescue them so that in its self is good enough. I suppose. But I really don’t like how that montage flew buy. I would have really liked to see them getting to know one another, and interacting. I mean sure it would mean having to watch Lion-O fume for an episode, but so what, that’s realistic. It’s ok in my book to let the lead show his flaws. I mean they could have done some simple character building scenes, like the kittens trying to catch their own food, succeeding on day and failing the next, then maybe Tygra slipping them some food. Or perhaps they encounter a native beast, some giant land monster or something and they have to work together to escape it. Or maybe Lion-O kills the poor thing in cold blood. Seething with rage as he was suppose to be. I don’t know, i just feel gypped. :lionomad:

Funny. I see it the other way.

While I agree with you that loyalty is tested in the bad times, I think if Tygra (or Cheetara) wasn’t loyal, this would be the perfect moment to bring it up.

As you said, Lion-o is now pretty much Lord of nothing but a kingdom in ruins. It would be too easy for Tygra to overthrow Lion-o and decide he won’t follow his leadership (which would be understandable considering he always thought he’d be a better Lord of the TCs), so for him to keep his loyalty in these moments is a great sign IMO.

I kind of agree with you. I missed the team work that was so characteristic of the OS. Confronting some monster together so they’d have had to combine their abilities to defeat it, and bond together while doing so, would have been good.

I felt like the first 10 minutes of the episode fast forwarded through about a third of the series…the twins joining the group immediately as Lion-O and company go to leave Thundera was completely anti-climatic and forced, then the group travel who knows how far across Third Earth to the border of Mumm-Ra’s lair in a few short sequences…

There’s no wonder at all the things they are seeing for THE VERY FIRST TIME, no shock at a sea of sand, no intrigue at a HIGH TECH PIRATE SHIP piloted by strange creatures they’ve never seen before…it’s all just taken in their stride, as they go through the motions of a highly generic revenge story, featuring a highly generic threat to a pirate ship by a mindless tentacled creature…

Disappointing to say the least.

I was also really surprised to see Thundera seemingly abandoned by Grune and Mumm-Ra…Ithought they were going to be taking up residence there, controlling the best land in Third Earth with the Thunderians as their slaves…but they’ve all just shuffled off back to the pyramid…so where are all the Thunderians?

I was a little put off about the bolded as well. Its hard to develop characters if you have a lot of them. Having the twins joining a little later would have given Lion-O, Tygra and Cheetara time to stabilize. This episode alone was an almost 180 for Lion-O and Tygra (understandable, but still) I would have appreciated more time to figure them out. Oh well.

The industry term for the “stuff” is called bumpers. In the Toonami ones for the classic series, they listed the characters ages and some interesting stats. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find them on YouTube or know of anywhere else they’d be.

I think if you were that hungry, suspicion was not the first thing in your mind.

Any which way you say it, it’s still lmao funny.

It was referred to in Star Trek: First Contact.

Cheetara said their supplies were low, not gone. They weren’t completely out so they wouldn’t be completely starved.

Personally, I always felt the OS - and Thundercats in general - was a blend of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth (Rankin-Bass worked on adaptations of both The Hobbit and The Return of the King after all, decades before Peter Jackson would do it), Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars, and a dash of Arthurian legend thrown in for good measure. I considered He-Man to be more obviously influenced by Conan (especially considering MOTU had been intended initially to have been a Conan-based toyline). I’ll admit that my experiences with Conan have only been limited to the movies, never having read any of Robert E. Howard’s actual stories. But what I know suggests He-Man to have been more directly inspired by Conan than Thundercats.

Feels like Conan the Barbarian? Well, I guess you could say Grune and Mumm-Ra are like Conan except that they’re bad guys and Conan was a good guy. He-Man is more Conan, not ThunderCats. I agree with Lord Slithor’s Tolkien reference. I think they borrowed ideas from Tolkein as well as George Lucas. A blend of fantasy and sci-fi.

I can see here and there how He-man feels Conan-ish, but you can trust me, everything Lion-O does, and half of what he says is very Conan. I’ve read books and comics, and seen loads of adaptations of it, (Conan The Adventurer cartoon, and both Arnald movies plus the Xbox game), and every time i watch Lion-O fight in the OS series, I can’t help but see Conan in his stead. From feats of strength to the way he moves, and responds to dangerous situations. I can’t help but see Conan in Lion-O. Also the surroundings are very Conan. The world is so Hyborian Age, I just always see it that way.

I own the animated Hobbit, and Return of the king, also the Last Unicorn, which I’ll never understand why it’s not mentioned seeing as if you watched em back to back anyone could see it’s the same animation. All the knots, knarls, twists and drool. Great stuff, I can see a huge resemblance in the animation of Thundercats (OS) Slive and Golum could be cousins. But outside of animation, I cannot see a resemblance to Tolken. None of Tolkens characters are as strong and manly as Lion-O. None of them are as vicious in battle. I guess i’m just saying, there’s no real muscle in Tolkens characters. But the world, well eh.. maybe a little bit. Nah, i just don’t see it. I own 4 different copies of the Hobbit, graphic novel, book, movie, and animated movie, and I just never feel i’m watching middle earth when i watch Thundercats. But that’s just me. To each their own right?

I do how ever see that Tarzan resemblance, again, very Conan ish, uses all the skills he has on hand to deal with the enemy, doesn’t have much but his wit and his reflexes to work with. And of course a power house of muscles. Set in the jungle usually.

As for He-man, what I can remember of the show, is it left something to be desired. It wasn’t entertaining. It most certainly never reminded me of Conan, or I would have watched it more. No i’d say He-man reminds me more of Jem and the Holograms. A bunch of bum kissers follow a fake blonde around. >_<

No offence to He-man fans, it’s just not for me.

Thundercats HO! :wilykit:

Yup.

I always saw alot of the Rings books influences in T-cats.

Snarfs were SO Hobbits for example. Even with Snarfs being nearly incorruptible except when they were fighting over candy fruit. In the Ring books for example it was mushrooms that could lead Hobbits to blows with other hobbits.

And since they seem to be embracing the LotR influences in this version. It was one reason I lifted an eyebrow at them putting Tygra in green. Green usually implies the elf role
