Aww, c’mon. The producers may watched at last The Avatar for producing such a script. I can feel the same vibe coming from it. And Avatar is very well-known for its superb characters. Sokka started there as one of the stupiest characters ever on the show and his progress was simply amazing after three seasons.
You can’t know how Tygra will turn out withhin the 26, perhaps, 52 episodes.
I agree, a one hour special doesn’t give us much to go on. I like how Tygra is turning out to be. He reminds me of Strongbow from ElfQuest. Someone who will support Lion-O but likely call into question all that he does. The idea of Tygra maybe wanting to take the lead from Lion-O from time to time sounds interesting to me. Or perhaps he’ll learn how to trust Lion-O’s instincts, after time. Lion-O always having a group of bum kissers doesn’t sound like good TV to me. The original Tygra seemed more fatherly, kind of cuddled him, I want to see Tygra challenge Lion-O put him through the paces of what being a leader is all about. A good leader can grow from the company he keeps, and having someone who makes him think twice about what he’s doing could be very enriching for both viewer and characters. I"m excited to see what we get out of this new version of Tygra. Hopefully a man with some BITE!
I agree with Zakkie. It’s hard to tell so early on, on anybody’s character development as the show progresses. Since we’ve gotten a confirmation of two seasons, I’m hoping we get a third season. The writing, animation and acting is proving to be excellent.
Because this are the 2010’ies. Simple characters, finalized in the very first episode, aren’t working anymore. Character Episodes nowadays are rather Chara Progress Episodes, it will build up to a bigger development and conclusion. Tygra will perhaps become a fine Lancer-type Chara in the Five-Man Band. Lancer-types are most times intelligent charas within the shows, it’s a common plot device. Just wait and see.
Ruu-Ben-Gaaru: Actually it’s currently only one season with 26 episodes total.
^^ Agreed. I hate in the first ep of the OS that you get the characters then and there. Really not much else too them save some minor things (Tygras addictive personality, Cheetara’s 6th sense..)
So im confused. Was the premiere a hour long episode or two eps shown together? Cause originally my cable box listed it as “the sword of omens” and “ancient spirits of evil”. So was it two 30 mins eps together or was that a mistake?
I think it was more of a case of “filling-in the blanks” by fans, and less of any sincere love fans had for the character. It’s well known among fans that of all the characters, Tygra was a tabula rasa. Hence why his behavior seemed so inconsistent from episode to episode; as the writers found him to be so bland that they could do pretty much anything they wanted with him that would have seemed out of character for anyone else. And this in turn fed fan-speculation about his character (“He’s got an addictive personality.” “He’s gay.” etc.)
I’ve seen something similar happen with the character of Samus Aran from the Metroid games. When Metroid: Other M came out, the fans were outraged. They thought the way Samus was presented in the game went against everything they felt had been established previously, and thought it was a betrayal of the character.
But the truth is, it wasn’t. Samus had never really been given a much of a personality in the previous games (either because of the limitations of game technology at that time or the short-sightedness of the writers). What fans really ended-up doing was simply projecting what they thought Samus was like as a person, both through their own imaginations and what her actions in the previous Metroid games implied. But at the end of the day, they still didn’t know who she was. And when Other M presented her in a way that went against the consensus of a stoic, independent woman-warrior and instead depicted her a a real woman with doubts and insecurities, the fans hated the developers for it.
And I think that’s kind of what’s at play with Tygra here. Can anyone here tell me what the Tygra of the original was like? Where did he come from? What was his upbringing? What music did he like? What’s his favorite color? Was he ever in love? And yes, while that’s what’s part of of the appeal of fanfic writing, it really shouldn’t fall to the fans to figure all of that out. The creators of the show should do that. Anything else is simply bad and/or lazy writing. And while the new Tygra may not be the technological whiz the original was, he comes across as a much more believable and nuanced character to me. And that’s why I prefer him.

I keep hearing about the new MYLP show and how great it is. I stayed away initially because, well, my id just instinctively went, “Ewwwwww! Girls’ show!” and paid it no mind. But I keep hearing all these great things about it. Could you please kind of summarize what it is that makes it so great and why I might think it’s worthwhile?
For starters, the ponies are no longer bland. They all various different personalities, they’re likeable and less annoying. I think you’ll like Rainbow Dash, she’s the tomboy of the group.
Second, the morals don’t feel forced. Very genuine and less force feeding.
Third, the jokes are hilarious and each character has their, and I quote TV Tropes on this, Crowning Moment of Awesome. And Crowning Moment of Funny too.
And considering you’re a fan of Doctor Who, there’s a background pony named Doctor Whooves (or Doctor Whoof depending on which name you prefer) who looks like a pony version of David Tennant and has an hour glass cutiemark.
It’s really that good, the two parter even incorporated Magical Girl elements and there’s some action as well in part two. Really, Lauren Faust put in alot of effort into making it too especially considering she made contributions to The Powerpuff Girls. I highly recommend it, my friend.
Honestly, comapring Tygra of the OS to this one…to me this one has more of a personality, no offense to those who love the OS Tygra. Tygra’s lack of emotion in this seems to be a by-product of his strong attitude, but I think it all is his way of masking a lot of things from his past that we don’t know about yet. He may be so used to doing it, just pushing his emotions down after bad situations. I find it very hard to believe that he or any of the others will be so shallow throughout this entire series. I enjoy character development, and I’m intrigued as to what direction they will take him. I think we may be pleasantly surprised…
Not even his powers were fully developed. Compare that to Cheetara’s 6th sense they beat us over the head with.
And this old fan of the show is wondering where this warm fuzzy notion of Tygra came from. About all we really know about him (since it was stated in the show) was he was shy. He was a bit smug about his intelligence which got him in to trouble a couple of times with the mutants. And possibly he was a bit of a loner since he could take off from the Lair for hours and possibly days at a time and no one worried.
I never saw Bengali as a replacement for Tygra either. Simply them showing the perceived 2 sides of the tiger’s nature. Bengal tigers are pretty agressive cats. There’s a reason why the natives of the Bay of Bengal will go out with a mask on the back of their heads. I always thought Bengali was an attempt to 1) Give Lion-O a friend his own age and 2) show the more agressive side of the tiger. Bengali being white with blue eyes and black stripes there’s no doubt he’s a Bengal tiger either.
Since they seem to be running with Tygra can swim very well in this version. I wonder if they’ll give him the tiger weakness of suffering miserably in the heat? There’s a reason why they stick near water in the hotter climates. I looked at that dark green armor and all I could think is the poor cat is going to cook out in the desert.
The characters were not finalized in the Exodus episode by any stretch. The groundwork of introducing the series was laid better, possibly because they had more time to do it.
Your link article was interesting in that it placed New Tygra in with Han Solo. That was my immediate impression of what New Tygra was like as I viewed the series. I hardly find Han Solo Intelligent. I actually dislike HS because I care not for the bad-boy type. Give me the priest/sage/healer type. Tygra, as Jaga’s replacement, and because of his quiet nature was that in the OS, and if they were doing a more adult show then, he would have been developed along these lines. So these two Tygra’s are fundamentally different, and will never intersect.
I do think we can expect a Japanese 5 man / 7 man trope as this is an anime. It has been done to death, but is the basis for average anime. Rarely does it excel, except maybe for anime like Moribito, and more loosely, Trinity Blood. I am curious to see how Guin Saga plays out as a threesome. I can’t wait to watch that series.
Here is what I would have liked to have seen for this new show: The first two episodes setting up the characters within their world (maybe actually seeing some women, other than Cheetara). The possibility of a threat in the third. Building up to the action in the fourth. With the resolution of hitting the road in the fifth. Now, maybe there is simply not enough screen time for this. But that would have been far more satisfying
I see that perhaps this show will hit a cliff hanger at the 13th episode true to anime in general (sometime in October), and if 26 episodes makes a season, the rest coming from February sweeps on. Worse case scenario the next 13 are the next season, and it will be seen in September.
As new Tygra is not old Tygra, and never wil be, I sat and thought what I disliked about him the most, and it is that he does not possess the high intelligence old Tygra did, and has no hint of the Jaga (read spiritual) within him. New Tygra could have been turned into a great user of magic instead of technology. Maybe that will be his road as a Jaga replacement.

You are certainly not speaking for this fan of OS Tygra. I never considered him a blank slate, nor bland. You could not do much with a healer/priest type in a kids cartoon show from the 80s, so he was neglected in many ways by the writers. He was inconsistent because the writers had to find a spot for him in a primarily fighting team, and he did not belong as a fighter. Poor Tygra had to be the adult, and as head of Council, he was. He cracked in Garden of Delights, and that seemed perfectly appropriate for one whose “mind was weighted down with problem’s” of keeping a small group alive. How anyone could think he was gay I always found silly. There were rare moments of him with Cheetara. I first saw the series some episodes in, not knowing anything, and I immediately thought by action, and tone that he and Cheetara were the parents of Wilykit and Wilykat.
Yes, much fan fiction has been written to fill in blanks. My approach was to take what I saw in the first 60 episods of Thundercats, and write what I saw Tygra becoming based on what I observed of his character. It is true the original writers did not develop past histories for any of the characters, so no one could anwser your questions to canon. But based on what a person observed, a picture of Tygra could emerge.
He was parent to the kittens in that he was responsible for their lessons; he was parent to them all as he was head of Council. He was a scientist and an architect, and the go to guy in the brains department. He fought and was brave. He was generally quiet and thoughtful, I guess virtues not valued today. In the Feliner episodes, he specifically mentions friends and family, so he was sociable. If Lion-o was the heart of Thundercats, Tygra was the soul.
As for love, many fans I know did love Tygra for Tygra’s sake. He is, as one friend put it, a gentleman. And I have been hanging out with the dude for a long time now, and I still find something new to explore with every story I write about him.
Quite simply, without Tygra, I would have never had the hope, chance or dream of becoming a writer. Pretty potent stuff coming from a tabula rasa.

Well, by now, you know what I think, and that I do not agree.
People responded to Tygra for a number of reasons in the original show. For those fans out there who loved Tygra, let’s hear from you why you loved him as a character.
