Nine Tiger
Can’t agree more with you… and if you were next to me, I’d consider kissing you right now lol. Tygra wasn’t bland, dull, boring at all… it was writers who decided to neglect him for whatever reasons they had.
Fans liked, and many of them still like him, for what he was. I know many people that would still say he was his favorite TC.
I liked Tygra because of his personality and unique characteristics, for being someone calm, loyal and a good friend. He was an upright character (a gentleman as you said). Did any of you ever see other member of the team apologizing when he/she did wrong? Or thanking others for saving his/her life or for helping him/her solving a problem? I sure not, except for Tygra in at least 4 eps (the ones that were about him of course).
Yes, he might not have been the greatest fighter (neither were Cheetara, Bengali or Pumyra for the matter), but that didn’t stop him from running into battle. He never said “you go, I’ll stay here guarding the Lair”. And when eh fought (and when the writers decided to make him justice) he was damn good. And brave (see “Fireballs of Plun-Darr” or Pumm-Ra", for example).
He was noble and humble, shy if you want to, but he never bragged about his abilities like Panthro and Lion-O, or even Lynx-O or Benagli. No one ever thanked him or recognized his work, and that didn’t daunted his spirit and devotion to the team. He knew his place and was eager to help. He was thoughtful, intelligent and kind of wise too, and was the one Lion-O used to turn in for advice. He was an architect, a scientist and the head of the council. Don’t tell me he was a tabula rasa with no defined personality.
Tygra was, despite being a science man, kind of mystic, magical being as well. That’s great.
I loved his relationship with the other TCs as well and consider that, even being a silent guy, I think the others saw him as the most reliable. He was a father figure for the kittens (they usually went out on exploring missions with him), a friend for Panthro, an advisor and a teacher for Lion-O, and was always with Cheetara (my theory is they did share a love interest, and that they also bonded because of those rare powers they had). He even worried for Snar as no other did. Sometimes he seemed nerdy with his comments and reactions, but that I would say was due to his shyness. Even his jokes were fun but nerdy. You know, kind of a Phoebe Buffay in “Friends”.
I also liked his weapon and powers (invisibility and mind power) the most. The whip was a very effecitve weapon. His power of invisibility matched his personality really well, as he was stealthy, quiet and cautious. As for the mind power, yes, writers didn’t develop it that much and it was a waste IMO. It could have been a great power to match with Cheetara’s sixth sense. What I learned about him through this power though is that he was also a responsible man. I’ve read that he not only not used it because it drained him, but also because he didn’t like toying with other being’s minds… a great power implies a great responsibility (Spiderman lol), and Tygra showed it very well.
I also liked him because, as a big-cats lover, and in a show named “Thundercats”, he was the one who most resembled the big cat he was based on: the tiger. Not only physically, but he showed his claws (feet), he growled and roared more than the others (equalized only maybe by Bengali) and was stealthy as I said. And he was colorful.
Lord Slithor: I doubt you someone could answer any of those questions about any of the TCs but Lion-O, sorry.
Nine Tiger, I liked how you described of him being the successor of Jaga, holding his wisdom and spirit. I really like this line of yours: “If Lion-O was the heart of the Thundercats, Tygra was the soul”. So good, so true.
I also agree in that he had to be the adult one (which should have been Panthro as he was the elder, but I always saw Panthro kind of immature), looking for the safe of others and granting it.
I also thought when I first watch “Exodus”, the he and Cheetara were parents to the kittens. Wouldn’t it have been great? A real family inside a grouop that functioned as a family?
Just two more things, Nine Tiger:
[ol]
[li]I don’t remember him talking about friends and family in “Feliner”. Can you refresh my memory?[/li][li]Where can I read your Tygra’s stories?[/li][/ol]
I think we need a Tygra thread lol
I’ll admit, of those fanfic writers who fleshed-out OS Tygra, your stories are among the better ones. There are others, though - especially one who will remain nameless - who really just had him do the most outrageous things that left you wondering, “Where did he ever think Tygra was capable of that?” (I think you know of the guy I’m talking about.)
As for eps that tried to give him more depth like “Garden of Delights,” I think those were sabotaged by them also having to be “message” shows - particularly anti-drug message shows which were pretty much obligatory in every ‘80s TV show. And I said once before that those ended up being really heavy-handed. So Tygra’s problem became more exaggerated because of it…and in my mind even looked unintentionally funny. I think had they not been so preoccupied with hitting kids over the head with a moral and rather just tell a good story and let the characters’ actions speak for themselves, it would have worked better and Tygra’s character would have been better for it.
Yes, much fan fiction has been written to fill in blanks. My approach was to take what I saw in the first 60 episods of Thundercats, and write what I saw Tygra becoming based on what I observed of his character. It is true the original writers did not develop past histories for any of the characters, so no one could anwser your questions to canon. But based on what a person observed, a picture of Tygra could emerge.
He was parent to the kittens in that he was responsible for their lessons; he was parent to them all as he was head of Council. He was a scientist and an architect, and the go to guy in the brains department. He fought and was brave. He was generally quiet and thoughtful, I guess virtues not valued today. In the Feliner episodes, he specifically mentions friends and family, so he was sociable. If Lion-o was the heart of Thundercats, Tygra was the soul.
I’ll give you that, and like I said, your stories did a much better job than most of doing justice to Tygra as he was written with what little material there was to work with and make him into a more three-dimensional character. Ocelli and I thought of him in much the same way you did in that he along with Panthro were the tech guys of the Thundercats. One of their more significant accomplishments in our story were that they co-designed the new battleship, The Pride of Thundera. But beyond that, I found it was very difficult to write him as a character that came across as believable. One sub-plot Ocelli and I came up with was having him and Felina fall in love, which provided an interesting commentary of the juxtaposition between technology and magic on a personal level. And we even have him being a kind of stealth warrior as he and Nayda (in a cloaking stealth outfit) infiltrate a Mutant base a la Solid Snake or Sam Fisher. But that’s about as much as we could think up.
As for love, many fans I know did love Tygra for Tygra’s sake. He is, as one friend put it, a gentleman. And I have been hanging out with the dude for a long time now, and I still find something new to explore with every story I write about him.
Quite simply, without Tygra, I would have never had the hope, chance or dream of becoming a writer. Pretty potent stuff coming from a tabula rasa.

Well, I know if that anyone can pull off a good Tygra story, it’s you, as you’ve said you’ve been writing him for a good long while now. I’ll admit, I probably wouldn’t be able to even write him as well as you have. And I think it’s cool that you’ve been able to find such great things to do with him.
Am I the only one who, as a kid, didn’t think Tygra was addicted to anything in Garden of Delights?
When I was a kid I just thought Mumm-Ra had put a spell on him using the fruit and the anti-drug thing went right over my head. lol
I thought that too ![]()
Lord Slithor, would you please post a link with the link to that mysterious fanfic wrtier, or send me a private message with it?
That’s what I always loved about Tygra too.
Besides being the very curious pragmatic type. He honestly believed there was a rational explaination for everything- even magic. Tygra looked at magic like scientist poke at the big bang today. It’s a interesting riddle to be solved as it confounds and melts down all the rules of the universe you currently understand. I liked the fact he was more repressed and reserved too.
And this might be the fact I’m more a Sci Fi fan and we tend to break mind powers up in to a seperate category from magic. The fact that Tygra had hints of being a telepath and pyrokentic (could control fire once it was started) was pretty damn cool too.
It’s a shame the OS didn’t run with that a little- being a telepath in close quarters would have given them a very good reason why Tygra needed his space. No to mention the fact they missed a fine opportunity for Tygra/Alluro grudge match equal to Pathro and Vultureman.
I never saw Tygra hinted as a mystic. The budding mystic of the group I always thought was Lion-O and that’s why he could do so much with the sword. He had the ablity to communicate and control any large cat. Lion-O’s rather strong magical resistance to just about everything. Add in a flashback we saw Claudis throwing magic around without the sword too if I remember correctly.
To quote old stripes, “Thank you, one and all.” I think we have made our point about the original Tygra. At this point, all old Tygra fans have to wish that maybe new Tygra will grow into old Tygra somehow. The brevity of the first two episodes of the new show did little to elevate him. So, what do we have to start with.
As someone kindly and gently reminded me, a story of growth will start at a point of darkness (how could I forget that!). Daring to invoke Taylor Swift’s song Mean ( “You, with your words like knives and swords and weapons that you use against me…”), why is young Tygra so mean? Parents killed horribly? Most likely. Survivor guilt? Most likely. Overcompensation by being a warrior type in a warrior household (No one can kill me) very definitely. Afraid for his younger brother (If Lion-o does not take things seriously, he will become seriously dead!)? Clearly.
What little beams of light? He protected his brother both physically, and to his mind, with his lecture. He flirted with a cleric. (Silly note: if he did not recognize that cleric as Cheetara, and if clerics might generally be male?..) Inconclusive, but shows him capable of seeking companionship, so not terribly shy, or overcompensating for shyness with wild bravado (let’s ring that bell).
Abilities: Mean left hook. Can fight with whip or gun. Competitive. (Overcompensation for second place status in the household).
If he is to become Merlin to Lion-o’s Arthur, for Arthur must always have a Merlin: Possible secret interest in history and reading kept from Claudus & company (I don’t want to spoil my tough guy image; I really am smart); dabbles in magic, or is intrigued by it (let us be tempted).
Well, we will see. I really wish they had taken more time at the beginning to set the story overall. I needed something positive to hang my hope on with new Tygra, and it wasn’t there for me in the first 45 minutes.

Funny. I never saw Tygra as that mean.
A bit of a jerk to Lion-O? Maybe.
What older sibling isn’t?
But Lion-O had no issue pulling out the claws either. At the party Tygra really looked like he was simply having a good time until Lion-O threw that punch and didn’t pull it. Then it jumped up to a new level that landed Lion-O tumbling in to the water.
The physical aspect of that challenge appeared to be “part of the game”. The previous contestants used various punches and kicks too, if I remember correctly.
The verbal taunting was a bit much. It seemed to go into bad sportsmanship territory, but I think Lion-O opened the door.
You asked about the Feliner. The comment is in part one, and perhaps I am reading between the lines as I usually do. Snarf is freaking out in the Thundrtank, and Tygra reminds him that “At least we know your friends and relatives survived when Thundera exploded.” This implies much.

Thanks again for your comments. Yeah, go Team Tygra!

Honestly, for the race, I think Tygra rubbed the win in Lion-O’s face because of Lion-O talking smack to him before the race.
“Too bad you’re afraid to get your tail kicked in front of your hero.”
Don’t forget Tygra was the one trying to drop the subject.
“Now is not the time.”
Regarding Tygra, I’m keeping in mind that he is way younger in this than he was in the original series. If 2011 Tygra is somewhere in his late teens, then that’s a world of difference from the age he was in the OS. Most of us think we know it all at that teenage/young adult age. Maybe OS Tygra did, too. Who’s to say, since we didn’t see that in the OS canon? (Aside from his change to a Thunder-cub, but that was magic, and made him a child after being an adult, so it’s not really the same thing anyway.)
Also, I don’t see this Tygra as being stupid or not intelligent. He’s arrogant, but look at how fast he took to technology once it was revealed not to be a myth. I also believe he cares about Lion-O and others. They just have a sibling rivalry. It’s not uncommon for brothers to argue and have a rivalry, but still love one another as family.
I missed the premiere and there is a new one coming on tonight. Does anyone have a copy of the episode or know where I could watch it online?
Excellent point there.
LOL! I’ll agree about sibling thing.
Even the yawn in the thrown room was SO older sibling playing the good child and gleefully helping a very unhappy daddy get a even hotter head of steam to direct at younger sibling.
It should be interesting to see if the reason we haven’t seen Tygra react about all that’s happened is because he’s still pretty numb about everything. (Though Tygra easily could be walking around with a concussion too-- he was pretty close to that blast with Claudis and he was acting kind of slow to react and groggy afterwards).
Merged Post:
Yup, I honestly thought they showed Lion-O really wasn’t a really nice gem either.
They both kind of came off as a bit jerky to me.
I think the too fast pacing of the first two episodes clearly contributed to my negative perrception of Tygra. I see him as a young 20 something, not a teen, so I guess I expect more of him. One wonders if there is a show Bible. He did take to technology, but any fool can use a gun. I guess I am not seeing an intellectual curiosity in him, and even as a snotty youngster, I would think he would have this trait. This is the thing that ticks me off the most. I knew he was gonna be a (use any appropriate 4 letter word) back in January. At least he should be a smart one.
The sibling rivalry is ok, as he does show he at least cares enough about his brother to back him up.

Yes if you have Cartoon Network on your TV package, I believe you can watch it online at www.cartoonnetwork.com
I wonder how much/what parts of the premiere will get cut when replayed in the weekly spot? There were 2 intros missing and 15 minutes before the first commercial break.
No, I went on there and signed in with my dish network account and looked at full episodes but, there was no Thundercats episodes.
Not sure then…
hopefully one of the US based fans can help? ![]()
