"Omens" (special one-hour series premiere) - Official Talkback Thread! (CONTAINS SPOILERS!) :)

I finally managed to see the first episode of the new Series! Not that easy here in Germany!

I was absolutely stunned! I felt like a was 5 years old all over again. Great feeling and when Claudius aka Larry Kenney said Thundercats, ho I totally freaked out. So great!

After watching the first two episodes three time until now I am very pleased with the new series.

Here my list what I liked and what not so:

  • Snarf: he cannot talk, that’s the best thing since inventing the Internet. Now he is cute and cunning and just adorable. I hope he will stay quiet

  • Tygra: man, I love Tygra! This ignorant and ****y cat! Just great! But when it comes to family he also supports Lion-O (Marketplace fight). Their brothership kind of reminds me of the brothership between Thor and Loki! Thor the heir to the throne of Odin and Loki just the adopted frost giant who only wants to impress his father. I think it’s kind of the same situation with Tygra and Lion-O! I am curious to see how this will go on.

  • Claudius: what a presence this cat has! I was blown away the first minute I saw him and when he said his first lines I was freaking out. You really could hear Lion-O from the 1985s series. Man, that was so good. I hope that Bandai will release a Claudius Action Figure! I think we need that one badly.

  • Story: The whole storytelling and atmosphere of the Series just feels epic. There are so many questions to be answered and I cannot wait to see the nex episode! That’s how you make a series and keep the viewer interested! Great job! I hope the anticipation will continue.

  • Fights: Of course, you cannot compare the fights of the old series with the new one. The technology nowadays is much more advance and therefore better. But I thought they did a great job and made everything look plausible and fitting!

What I disliked:

  • Why was it possible for Claudius to use the Sword of Omens against Lion-O? In the OS the Sword would have snapped. I really hate that and liked the idea of the OS better! I think the Sword should not be used against other Thundercats

  • Willykat and Willykit: Ok, they had not much screentime until now, but what I saw was not good. I was mostly annoyed by these two kittens. And I really don’t care about both! I hope these characters will improve in the future.

  • No Intro? Come on! Thundercats need an intro like Kobe Bryant needs a basketball.

  • Mumm-Ra’s voice: arggg… there is no darkness or evil in the new voice. Perhaps I am nitpicking but he does not sound intimidating.

On the top of my head that were the major points. Of course, there would be a lot more to talk about. But that’s it for the moment!
I really like the new Series and think they did a great job! I cannot wait to see the next episode and finally find out more about Lion-O, Tygra, eventually Panthro, the Thundertank, the Tower of Omens, Mumm-Ra!
Oh yes, I am pumped!

The producers did a disservice to the fans of the original series in what they did to Tygra in this new series by making him strictly a warrior without superior intellect. It is the same problem that happened in the “second” season of the original show. No one knew how to write a man who was intelligent and kind, and only fought when all other options were exhausted. Bengali superseded Tygra because he was young, hot-headed and a fighter like Panthro. Tygra essentially disappeared because no one wanted to develop the character further. And that was unfortunate because so many options existed. Just look at the tremendous body of fan fiction that proves that.

In my opinion, Tygra being dark side from the beginning would have be better. At least he’d have to be intelligent, unlike what he appears to be now. I expect there will be such an episode where Tygra will go short-term dark, but he’ll snap out of it.

Still waiting for the bar fight.

I was torn between Pumar-O and Lionyra, but decided for the fiorst one because it sounded more “masculine” adn I needed a male character

Anyway, if big cats have two or three cubs in a litter, then Tygra and Cheetara could have had twins (top keep in line with every movie plot and fanfic in the world lol): Tytara and Cheetygra, one could be a male and the other one a female. What do you say? Let’s write our own co-written fanfic!

My aunt’s parents did lol. Their names were Angel and Maria, and my aunt’s name si Gelma (from Angel and Maria).

But you’re right, I could look for original names for Tygra & Cheetara’s twins and Lion-O & Pumyra’s cub.

BTW, Bengali didn’t have kids because in my fanfic, he dies in battle.

I completely agree. I liked more the OS Tygra because his intelligence set him apart from the others, now he doesn’t even have it; I hope he shows it soon, or another ability / power.

I also agree with you in how they mistreated and misused Tygra in the second season of the OS. That’s what I didn’t like about the introduction of the new TCs, because with them there were too many characters now to develop, and they neglected Tygra, especially to Bengali. I think the problem was they basically split his character in two: Bengali took his looks and courage, and Lynx-O his intelligence, so Tygra wasn’t needed anymore. As you say, he was only used when the other characters were exhausted or when they seemed to remember there was him in the team as well. But they could have exploited the mind power thing. Or even make an episode where Tygra started feeling useless (Like some of Snarf’s episodes, or even the kittens) and at the end he showed his value to the team. In the second season, he was the TC written off of the most episiodes, and in some that he did make an apearence, he got a few lines (sometimes only one or none), until they finally leave him in Third Earth to get rid of him. Such a mistreat. They could have taken Cheetara or Panthro out of some eps and use Tygra instead.

Yes, they could have done a lot better with his character, being kind and smart and, as the producers themselves said, upright.

I guess they might do that, to honor episodes like “Garden of Delights” and especially “Crystal Canyon”, where Tygra went kind of dark.

Thanks for your comments. I was being to feel like Cassandra, as far as my take on new Tygra (Tygra 2.0?) I have always like the Garden of Delights episode because it was Tygra who bore the heaviest burden in keeping everyone alive. As a stressed, sensitive individual, it would be easy for him to fall prey to Mumm-Ra’s trickery. The Crystal Canyon I thought worked less well. Tygra could heal with the crystal. It would have been nice if he was tempted by the crystal, but could discovered healing, or advanced mind power, within himself. He has the reputation of being an addictive personality, but it simply is not true. I think the second episode was just another example of “let’s find something for Tygra to do.” You might check out my story Be Forgot. Sort of my take on Tygra vs Tygra 2.0, and the whole second season abandonment of Tygra in the OS.

Thanks! I’ll check it right now!

I do think they could have mor with “Crystal Canyon”, but enver thought of what you said about him using the key stone to find more about him and his powers. That would have been nice. And yes, it also seemed to em they chose Tygra for that one because they suddenly remembered he was a character too and haven’t been used properly for a while, and because no other TC would have been ideal for that plot.

And the character has so much potential. Not only he was intelligent, but he was sensitive and intoverted as well… so much you could do with those characteristics.

Even when he was stuck in Third Earth with Pumyra, they could have done something with them. For example, have an episode in which Third Earth got under attack and the TCs in New Thundera went there are help. I know there were some eps like this, but they never used Tygra or Pumyra, as if they forgot they were actually in Third Earth.

Another thing they could have done was to have Mumm-Ra captured the TCs in New Thundera,a nd it was to Tygra and Pumyra to rescue them. That would have been nice.

I really hated the way how they made him aside.

The premiere of the reboot was everything I wanted in a new Thundercats and more. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the series and hopefully it will be around for years.

Sigh All good ideas, as you have suggested. All the lost potential. Makes me sad.

I love the mixed feelings people are having on the ‘new’ Tygra. I think he is better this way then from the OS. Just because like everyone has mentioned he was just pushed over. I’m on the last few episodes of the last season now, just finished the Moss man, and even in Tygras last episode they made him a idiot feeb.
'I’m the scientist of the group, but I’m gonna risk everything and go through this meteor shower…yes. that sounds logical and in my character."

Gr.

This new Tygra is neither interesting or unique. The Tygra of the first 60 episodes of the OS was worth the attention paid him by fans.

MGP

Yes, it seemed very idiot of him. But remember he was stuck in Third Earth for God knows how long, alone (Pumyra was in a differetn building, far away from him), and he must have been eager to see his friends. If that meteor shower would delay his arrival, he would have had less time to be with them (they don’t say how long was he supposed to stay, maybe only one day).

I think loneliness and nostalgia made him act that way, and was not an idiot for that. The idiots, if any, were the TCs in Nw Thundera for not thinking of a rotative guard system in Third Earth, like having to of them every month so Pumyra and Tygra wouldn’t feel lonely.

Besides, I don’t get why Tygra stayed in the Tower of Omens and Pumyra in Cats liar. It doeesn’t make sense because:

a) In “The Last Day”, Mumm-Ra destroyed the Tower of Omens. With him, the mutants and lunattacks gone, why did the TCs bother to rebuild it? It seemed unnecessay to me. It would have been better if both Pumyra and Tygra stayed at Cats Lair and accompained each other.

b) Tygra actually designed and built Cats Lair,a dn he lived there, while Pumyra lived in the Tower. Wouldn’t it be more logic to have them in their usual residences? Talk about logic now

Agree. Tygra was a very big, important character in the first season, especially the first half of it. He got a lot of fans, loyal fans who still like him. I don’t know why producers thought he was lame and turned him kind of bald (for some people, for me eh never was it)… maybe kids showed more interest in Panthro.

Why does everyone keep saying he’s not intellectual? The Thunderian society didn’t believe in technology, but that in no way, shape, or form means he’s not intelligent. I saw nothing that even so much as hinted that he’s not smart.

I think what people mean to say, is that in the old series Tygra was more analytical, always pondering things before making conclusions. He was “intelligent” enought know when to act. He also designed and built things, was a scientist, knew some history, etc.

Now he doesn’t seem to think things that much. Maybe he is smart (and must be, or Claudus would have had a bad concept of him), but is not showing it yet.

Just give the show some time. We’re still at Episode 2.

Nicely put.

Excellent points.

Just a gut feeling it won’t go well as far as Tygra goes.

After watching the premiere again here are a few nitpicking observations:

  • When Lion-O is sparring with his father the sword he was using disappears when he takes the Sword of Omens. Oops.

  • Lion-O activates one of the mines after seeing the Lizardmen use them and turns it off before it explodes. How did he know the mines could be deactivated?

  • Mumm-Ra refers to himself as “Mumm-Ra The Ever-Living” when he blasts the clerics yet he later asks the Ancient Spirits of Evil to transform him into Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living…isn’t he already?

  • Snarf kind of appears out of nowhere when they are making their escape from the throne room. I was expecting him to break Tygra and Lion-O out of jail, but I guess he was taking a nap.

None of these things really bother me, it’s just easier to point out the tiny flaws than to talk at great length about everything I liked.

I agree.

Add in we haven’t seen enough of Tygra yet to make any solid conclusions. He had what maybe 5-10 minutes of screen time and like 10 speaking lines?

Add in the way Lion-O didn’t hide the tech he was working on when Tygra paid a visit to his room makes me think Tygra knows a little more about baby brother’s hobbies and never passed the information on to Claudis either.

I don’t understand why them making Lion-O a bit of a techo geek, grease monkey in this series would take anything away from Tygra’s character. The tech thing was always part of Lion-O. Pathro couldn’t keep him away from the thundertank. If it was tech and blew crap up Lion was on it. Lion-O always had his head under the hood of something in the series if his duties as Lord didn’t call him away. If he hadn’t been Lord you easily could have seen Lion-O happily sliding in to the role of Pathro’s assistant.

Actually I thought that part could’ve just been common sense. You usually turn things off the same way you turn them on.

I was more curious on how he set off two explosions by throwing one bomb.

I was watching the opener with my sister and all she could say was ‘Damn, how lucky is Lion-O that he didn’t manage to set the mine off when he was trying to pry apart in his bedroom?’

I wasn’t questioning how Lion-O knew to turn the device off, I was wondering how he knew the mine could be deactivated once turned on. For all he knew it could detonate in 5 seconds no matter what.

He had a whole bag full of them, I just assumed he tossed a few but they only showed one in the interest of time.

Well not knowing much about working tech, he probably didn’t think about not being able to turn it off. In his might it might’ve been like, “Why make something you can’t turn off?”

Guess I didn’t see the bag tho.
