I’m a new member here (Just registered literally two minutes ago!) And a new Thundercats series is certainly promising, but I can’t help but feel that the Lion-O design shown is horrible. I mean, he looks NOTHING like Lion-O, and is WAY too skinny. I have been watching this show since I was young… (Well, actually, I wasn’t even alive in the 80’s… I saw the cartoon network re-airing ages ago, and now own every single episode ever made…) A new series is promising, but has there been any new progress on it? Any news on the new series? Has the WB cancelled it? When is it going on the air if it still exists? How do you know it’s legit? I don’t mean to be skeptical, but I’m being cautious here…

We don’t have much to go on TV Geek aside from what was already mentioned on the thread. The Lion-O concept art you speak of is from a now defunk version of a new ThunderCats series – it is not connected to the one supposedly announced in Europe. All we know thus far is what that person saw and it’s not official. If the show has been greenlit, we should know more next month at the annual Toy Fair in New York. ThunderCat fans usually wait for something to be announced every year at that particular event, and every year we end up disappointed.
With the news of WB shopping the ThunderCats license (that we know is real), here’s hoping for something new!

I may be young, but I really enjoy thundercats, and really think today’s generation should see it in all it’s glory. It’s a great show, and I really like it. All of the kids I know think that something old is something that stinks. But it’s really not true. Sometimes, what is old is better than what is new… Anyway, I wish the best of luck to this Thundercats, and sincerely hope it goes through!

Thanks! I’m probably a one of a kind kid in my school! It’s not everyday you meet a kid like me! Not many kids think of TV in the way I do. I watch lots of it, but enjoyed the 90’s the most, and really believe that that era was the golden age of TV. Honestly, some of the greatest television shows were created then, and had lots of success. Thundercats may have been the 80’s, but the re-runs were also popular too, weren’t they? Anyway, I’ve got a growing collection of DVDs, and most of my DVDs involve shows from the 80’s and 90’s. Thundercats included. (Yes, I’ve got all four volumes!) I just hope that a new series holds well. I mean, many re-makes and revivals have been tried thousands of times before, and some have failed miserably. Thundercats is a great show, and it would really stink if they butchered it. First off, the characters have got to resemble their eighties counterparts in some way, unless it’s a new generation (Never deny anything. Such a concept is certainly possible. Imagine, Lion-O’s son… Or something like that…). Some new characters and enemies would be much appreciated though. I mean, how long can Mumm-Ra actually survive the way he’s been doing? (Please note I have not finished volume four, and therefore, don’t know everything. I’m still on disc one! I got it for christmas, so it’s not too long ago I got it…) I’d love to see what a new theme song would sound like, but then again the old one is classic in my opinion. But some new weapons would certainly be cool… But they probably have to re-introduce all of the characters, and the settings, so the first episodes could be quite interesting to see how they do that… Anyway, those are just my thoughts.
I agree completely. The 200X He-Man series, in my opinion, is the perfect example of how you can take a show and then change the look of the main character too much, make a new soundtrack, and change the overall feel of the series to the point where it’s not appealing to anyone but the hard-core fans. Not that change can’t come or a new generation come in - just look at Lou Scheimer’s attempt to make He-Ro Son of of He-Man, or Simon Furman’s run on the comic book versions of Transformers: Armada and Energon, but the fundamental concepts have to stay the same.
As for Volume Four of the old series and Mumm-Ra’s continuance … you’re in for a treat when you see the final episode, and that’s all I’ll say!

I was at one point thinking of a Thundercats Prequel, showing life on Thundara before it got blown up, but I don’t know how well that could go over. Seeing as I’m not a very big fan of prequels myself… Anyway, any ideas on this (possible) new series? I’m super excited!

The idea of a ThunderCats Prequel with life on Thundera before Thundera ended and reforged itself into “New Thundera” would be kind of neat. …It’d be neat to see Claudus, Lord of the ThunderCats (before his blindness) lead a previous generation of ThunderCats fighting against their enemies the Plundarians. It’s always those dang blasted mutants!
I too am excited for a ThunderCats revival and after reading rumors here and there, I think that this site has the best sources. I mean, C’mon, I don’t believe the idea of Snarf being a three-eyed mystic leading Teenaged Thunderians who are in a rock band in some part of LA or San Francisco. Blech!
I agree. It’s one of the most disgusting ideas… And how could they be in LA anyway? They live on Third Earth! But a sequel could also do well. I still have to finish the DVDs, and am only on disc one still. (I did just watch two eps like two minutes ago though. Only one more episode on Disc one left! and then 5 more to go…)
I saw the updated Lion-O and he looks more like an alley cat than a ThunderCat.:yikes: If this is a glimpse of what we’ll be getting, I see “failure” written in blazing letters across this “updated” version of the cartoon. This is going to sound quite harsh, but I hope it does fail so the kids today can check out the old show and see the ThunderCats as they were meant to be seen.:bengali:

Have they also rejected the L.A. rock band concept? I hope they have!
The ThunderCats belong on either Third Earth or New Thundera. They belong nowhere else.
That was a rumour, and an entirely false one at that, from what I’ve been told. The idea sounds really dumb! I prefer to see the Thundercats on New Thundera personally. I just hope that when/if this new series hits the airwaves that it won’t be a remake. A remake would really stink I think. But it seems the most possible way to re-introduce the characters. If it’s a remake, I’ll be extremely dissapointed! I would rather a continuation of the old Thundercats, picking up where it left off! (I’m on disc 11! I prefer to call it disc five, but since it’s part two of season two, I guess it would properly be called disc 11. I just finished Cracker’s Revenge last night. I never cared for Cracker for some reason. He never really struck me as a good villain.) I’d also like to see some new thundercats, and see more of Tygra and Pumirah. It annoys me that they stayed. You hardly ever see them!

Of course my dream is that Warner Brothers is smart enough not only to leave the 'Cats appearance basically unchanged. I sincerely hope they’re wise enough to get Larry Kenney back as Lion-O (he probably wishes it too!). Also on board would hopefully be Peter Newman (Tygra, Wilykat, Bengali), Lynne Lipton (Cheetara, Wilykit), Doug Preis (Lynx-O), Gerianne Raphael (Pumyra), and – if he’s still with us – Earle Hyman (Panthro). They’d have to get a replacement for the late Robert McFadden (Snarf, Snarfer) as well as one for Earl Hammond. I say that last bit because I don’t know if Earl Hammond is still living.:?
And oh yeah, I agree with you about the remake. It’s unnecessary as the ‘Cats were, and still are, fine as they were originally done. Now, what they can update are the stories, the ThunderCats’ technology (I’d love seeing all their vehicles updated, especially the Feliner so they can really do some deep-space adventuring), and, for once, actually do a backstory on the ‘Cats’ past, present, and future. And, yeah, some new ThunderCats would be nice, especially if they can take over the Third Earth outposts so Tygra and Pumyra can return to New Thundera themselves! And bring some renegade Thunderians into the mix to liven things up on New Thundera!
And y’know what else they can do? Something that should have been done in the 2-hour “Thundercats, Ho!” story: Make Tygra and Bengali related to each other as older and younger brothers!
Those are nice ideas! I would like it if they actually had space-suits! XD Seriously, I know that it’s scientifically impossible to breath in space for any creature. And it’s annoying seeing them breath in space… Or, at least explain something like a pill they take to breath or something… I don’t mind if they change voice-actors… That doesn’t bother me so much, as you know their the same character regardless of the voice. I can sleep peacefully knowing the LA idea was debunked!
If all this information is correct about ThunderCats, we can expect new toys soon before the series comes out late this year.
When are all the toy events that could showcase them? If you look at the previous remakes of 80’s toons: M.O.T.U., TMNT,G.I.Joe,Transformers the toys were released before the series aired!
The Toy Fair is next month and then the San Diego Comic Con could also host some news for both the toys and the cartoon. At the moment this is all speculation seeing as though we haven’t heard anything for several months now.
Regarding the toys, all the lines you mentioned were toy driven. Now I’m not very familiar with ThunderCats toys, but the original show wasn’t really driven by the toyline until later in the show so whether we see the toys early on or right before the cartoon starts is anyone’s guess.
Yeah, I’d like seeing the spacesuits too, as well as diving suits. Hee, hee, then they can really call them CatSuits!:mischievous: In “The Totem of Dera” story, they had the 'Cats traveling through a swamp while wearing parkas and snow boots! Who does that in real life?! I’d also like to see them treat outer space realistically. Not only can’t you breathe in space, there’s no gravity there either, so you wouldn’t fall like a rock, you’d float.
As for the voice actors, I have to disgree. Larry voiced Lion-O so distinctively that I can’t imagine anybody else doing that character. The same goes for the characters voiced by Peter, Lynne, Gerianne, Doug, and Earle. But I can handle somebody new doing Snarf and Mumm-Ra.
I have a question for you too, Manny. Exactly when is the new Thundercats cartoon coming out? And will it be aired on the CW?:?
I don’t like the rock band idea, but the good side of all of this is that we fans get to see a new ThunderCats series after all the years of rumors.
According to the person we are quoting, mid to late 2007 would be the esitmated time a cartoon would come out. Now let’s think about it for a minute…
If the cartoon were to air in mid-2007, an announcment would have to definitely come out real soon, thus we would be led to believe that something has to come out out of the annual Toy Fair show next month. If we don’t get anything next month, then I highly doubt the cartoon is coming out before September.
The San Diego Comic Convention is the next biggest event where companies announce things and this year’s SDCC is going to be in late July. If an announcement is made then, we could see the cartoon premiere sometime during fall.
As for where it would air, I have no idea, but I would bet either Cartoon Network or the CW Saturday Morning block. I’d rather it be on the CW since it would have a higher chance of reaching out to a larger audience than CN. Plus, we know the show would only be aired on Saturday before 11AM not like CN, where they could place it at some unorthodox timeslot. I still believe that is one of many factors to why the new MOTU series did not do well.
