I think its great that the new series is “officialy” in the works. Unfortunately I also think that the figures will deviate quite a lot from the original series though. It was mentioned once before by another member that it is highly unlikely the characters would still wear their “underwear” style suits, and judging by the costumes of most characters these days I think that is the case.
Despite this I am still very excited to see what they come up with. Regardsless of what the new show brings us, I would still like to collect the new line of toys if it arrives.

As far as the figures are concerned, although I’d love to be wrong given what a mess they made of the re-relaunch of MOTU, I would be absolutely shocked if they were produced by anybody other than Mattel, simply because Mattel seem to automatically land the toy license for most WB properties. I can’t recall who produced the Superman Returns figures, but I believe I’m right in saying that the last two Batman tie-in lines (Batman Begins and The Batman cartoon) have both been Mattel, as I believe were Harry Potter, and the list goes on.
My choice would probably be Hasbro, just because of how successfully and aggressively they’ve marketed and pioneered their two main boys’ lines, Star Wars and Transformers, and how high-quality I think their products are overall - but, like I say, I think Mattel will get it!
Superman Returns is indeed made by Mattel, as is JLU and the DC Superheroes 6" line. Hasbro has the additional distinction of taking over Marvel Legends from Toybiz, and based on the quality they’ve put into Star Wars and Transformers in the past few years … I wish it would be Hasbro as well.
Still, I won’t complain if Mattel manufactures the property, as that will probably mean the Four Horsemen will do the sculpting. I just want a lot of articulation in each action figure.
It would be really neat if the new toyline were produced at the same scale (size of figures) as the old toyline. Not only would they display better alongside one another, but old figures could fit in new vehicles and vice versa. If they made a ThunderStrike, and it fit the old figures… Oh my God!
You know, I think I would like Hasbro to do the toy line myself. Alot of people have also taken to the new G.I.Joe Sigma Six line, as well. That happens to be Hasbro. So Hasbro does have alot of the great toy lines… Mattell is okay, but I prefer Hasbro. Hopefully they will do Thundercats justice on the toylines and the cartoon…
I too would like Hasbro to get it, since pretty much all their toylines seem to be successes! I’d like to see Four Horsemen designed figures if Mattell got the license, but given the similarities to MOTU, I cant help but think it would fail in their hands.
I’d love if the Four Horsemen did the toyline, BUT I wanted them to have much more articulations than the ones they made for MOTU. I mean, there’s no knee joints and some don’t even have elbow joints.
I’ve seen pictures of prototypes made by them that had those joints, but somehow in the process it was decided to make the figures with less articulations.
Maybe there could be two lines: One for collectors that had less joints, keeping the looks of the figures better and other for playing that had joints that allow all movements possible!
Just as a note of interest, my understanding as to the reasoning behind the 200X MOTU figures having less articulation than originally planned was (IIRC) to make them more durable for play and less likely to have limbs break off! My fervent belief is that, had the 200X MOTU line been released for collectors rather than kids, they would have had more articulation rather than less!
I just hope that if it is indeed Mattel who land the toy license, they will learn from some of their mistakes with the MOTU toys - I’m not so bothered about points of articulation, but my biggest beef is that they will need to be marketed about 100x better than MOTU was!
… hey, i dont care if the arms have articulation or not, i just want the figures to resemble the vintage line as much as possible, my plans are to keep the whole collection moc.
Also, it was Mattel’s decision to remove the articulation originally in the prototypes, not the Four Horsemen’s decision.
Any figure that can at least slightly mimick the martial arts-action of the cartoon will be inadequate in its articulation, IMHO. It would be nice if Lion-O got the shifting ball-joint shoulders of the early Marvel Legends figures so he can hold the Sword of Omens over his head with both hands, but I know that would be asking for a miracle.
Hey He-Fan, I agree with you, they should have been more marketed! And I hope they air the cartoon in my country, the love to show here only crappy cartoons, specially some japanese Pokemon, Digimon-like, I hate that stuff!
Starrcade, I am making plans to have 2 collections: One moc and one loose!
I’m a collector but I’m also still a kid when it is about the vintage toylines I had. I have some moc figures, Thundercats and Rambo (nobody seems to like those) that are carefully displayed, but I also love to have the loose ones (Thundercats, He-Man, Rambo, GIJOE), I can grab, change their display, put them near the computer, etc..
Sword of Omens, “so he can hold the Sword of Omens over his head with both hands”, that would be awesome! I am starting to imagine how nice it would be to display the loose figures if they were articulated as that
Mattel does seem to be getting better with there recent case packs of the DC heroes toys, so maybe they DID learn there lesson with MOTU. We can only hope! :liono
While I am a huge fan of the ThunderCats and after reading news about an upcoming remake to the series, I was in awe. However, after reading that the show would consist the ThunderCats as teens in a rock band, I felt as if a part of me died.
I’m very ecstatic that this rumored Teenage ThunderCats in a Rock Band was debunked and is indeed a hoax, and THANK GOD, TOO. The idea of Snarf as a three-eyed mystic leader?? WHAT?!? …and them in L.A. just makes it even more disjointed to the original.
Personally, I hope that Warner Bros. doesn’t screw this one up and keep the continuity of the ThunderCats as closely as possible to the original 80s classic.
With that being said, I’m wondering which channel this new series will debut in because I would like to see how the Warners interpret the ThunderCats.
Let’s hope for all our sakes that this new series takes place in Thundera (or New Thundera) and not present-day Los Angeles.
:Edit: After seeing the possible design for Lion-O on another message board ( www.retrojunk.com ) I was confused. Sure, the design looks good, but I personally find the new design lacking manliness.
