Just got a couple of my favorite FPS games back up and running again. Both of them are kind of obscure, but they’re worth checking out. Both of them came out during the '90s, when FPS games were creative and innovative and before they became the endless parade of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor clones they are now.
The first is Rise of the Triad…also known as ROTT to some fans. It was published by Apogee. Originally it had been intended as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, but somewhere along the way that was dropped and it became its own thing.
The game was interesting in that you could choose up to five different characters to play - both male and female - and each with varying traits (one could run faster than others, one had slightly more health, etc.) The enemies were all digitized live actors - many of them the programmers themselves, or their friends and relatives, who also supplied the voices as well.
The game was also unique among FPSes in that it had a sense of humor, albeit kind of a dark and sardonic one. One type of enemy, the Lighting Guard, would occasionally drop to his knees after taking a certain amount of damage and say, “No! Don’t shoot! Please!” Then he’d fake his own death. But if you spared him, he’d just get up and start shooting at you again. If you happened to be carrying a bazooka, he’d try to steal it from you if he got up close enough to you and mumble, “Gimme that!” and then try to shoot you with it.
The game also had some of the weirdest and unique power-ups ever, including one of the best God Modes I’ve ever seen in a video game! You can see it here in this video around the 2:00 mark.

And no, your eyes aren’t fooling you. There’s also a Dog Mode here too at 4:00. And those are just a couple of the many weird power-ups in this game!
The other game is called Strife. It used the Doom engine. Unfortunately, it had the misfortune of coming out at the tail-end of Doom’s popularity and got overlooked in the wake of the newer generation of 3D FPS games like Quake and Half-Life.
That was a real shame, because it was one of the first FPS games to have a real storyline, as opposed to other games at the time which basically consisted of “shoot everything that moves.” Strife was set on a planet ruled by an oppressive religious regime called The Order. You played a mercenary who becomes a freedom fighter for a group called The Front, and you go through the game undertaking missions for them and helping to liberate the planet along the way. (Incidentally, this game sort of served as a partial inspiration for our Thundercats-based FPS game I mentioned in another thread).
The game not only sported some great art direction and use of the Doom engine, but also featured some great voice acting, and the story was told though very good comic book art-style cutscenes. Here’s a video of the game in action, along with its pretty cool intro.

Both of these games can be run using special programs that are available for download. Strife can be run with ZDoom; a program written to support many Doom engine-based games.
For ROTT, a German programmer created a program to run it under Windows. There’s both WinROTT and GLROTT. I recommend the latter as it supports higher resolutions and enhanced sound quality.
As for the actual game files, I can’t help you there. You might be able to find them on torrent or abandonware sites. I still have the original disks myself. So if you really need them, I can make you copies on request.
Funny part is when you use Shrooms and Elasto mode at the same time. You’re bouncing around in a colorful haze.

Well, today it’s an election day for my country at the most critiacl time of our recent history.There is upheaval over the last months with the political system and things are a bit uptight.

Watching “Underdog” on DVD and enjoying the nostalgia trip.

Well a couple of days ago my school had a funriser event. And one of the booths had old computers that you could smash. I’ve been on my summer vacation almost two weeks and I’m enjoying every minute of it except for the part when I wake up without my alarm being set, I wake up in a panic thinking I’ve overslept and am late for class.
I’ve worked hard on my garden and it looks wonderful with it being full of hibiscus flowers and other full sun flowers. My tomato plants and pepper plants are taking off and will eventually yield a wonderful summer long harvest.
My mother has been coming over a lot lately, she is lonely, especially since my father died back in December of 2009.
I really enjoyed making my mother a steak dinner on the grill for Mother’s Day. I made her a Delmonico steak rare, with a baked potato with sour cream & chives and corn on the cob, and we spent the next several hours in my yard under my canopy talking.
This summer has been great so far.
My summer break will be here in two weeks! Just have to get through finals week ewwww. Basically this summer I will be starting my new job at pet store. Then going to art classes to improve how I draw the anatomy,improve on water coloring, and improve on photoshop. so weeeeee!
I have to finish up finals next week. It sucks but I have all A’s right now so I’m not too worried. The only problem is I’m taking some classes that are for people a year or two older than me so the finals are harder. I hate being smart.
Summer is going to be great for me though. Between friends, just relaxing at home, and working on my job (I am a music producer for local bands and I am also in one), this summer could be really good for me.
