Been meaning to comment on this…had a death in the family and matters to tend to…I’m here now, and gonna set things straight.
Listen people, the execs at WB know EXACTLY what they’re doing. As I’ve said previously in another thred, creative liberties have it’s place, and from what we’ve seen with this concept art - many reasons as there may be - can see why the project is on hold.
Don’t get me wrong, Charlie Wen is a very, VERY talented artist, and is entitled to his vision, but as far as I’m concerned the current vision is not clearly identified with Thundercats.
As a former animation student myself, I can say with certainty - “Animation 101” - good, solid character design depends upon one thing - SILHOUETTE. A character should always be able to be identified by it’s silhouette, regardless of how it’s colour pallete, or minor details, may change.
Case and point: Without explanation, would you be able to identify THIS character as Lion-O if only you saw it’s silhouette?
One of the keys to Batman’s success, despite the many incarnations, is the fact that he can ALWAYS be clearly identified as Batman. As the main character, his silhouette never changes majorly enough to be unidentifiable. His villains - a different matter, but by being able to clearly identify the protagonist allows liberties to be taken with other characters.
As for the Thundercats - seen all of the released concept art to date pertaining to the Thundercats movie, VERY nice art, just not Thundercats.
Screenrant.com recently carried our story on the delayed / on hold ThunderCats movie. They’ve done a nice job over there crediting the site when we send a press release or post a movie related story on our front page.
I’m not sure. I thought of the Thundercats right away when I watched this, because the aliens look sort of cat-ish. I think the fact that GI Joe was a hit would be a good thing for the 'Cats.
True, but a potential movie would have to be especially mindful with the TCats. It could go horribly wrong very easily (as in CATS wrong) if not handled with care.
Another small comparison to Thundercats. I feel after the release of Avatar there is going to be lot of comparsions as to what to how good or bad a live action Thundercats movie could be.

At this point in time, as much as quite a few fans are leaning towards a live-action TCats movie - and as intrigued as I am by the concept, I honestly believe to do so would be to tread on thin ice. I repeat, at this time.
In reference to the fan made TCats trailer on Youtube; fantastic job with the special effects and the concept. Would I go see a live-action Thundercats movie with Brad Pitt as Lion-O and Vin Diesel as Panthro is another question.
Whether you realise it or not, Thundercats has strong, strong roots folks - a big part of the “formula” or “distinct fingerprint” not to be tampered with.
Maybe you fed on the action scenes, but the action was only a means to an end; a vehicle to carry the story. Thundercats was heavy on moral wisdom and common sense; from Jaga’s proverbs to the lessons learned through any given course of action.
I like the style of this movie, and think it might transfer well over to Thundercats. That said I hope they don’t draw too much inspiration on the design of the Thundercats since I didn’t like those alien whatever creatures they were.
My idea for the next Thundercats project whatever that may be, either a cgi movie or a new animation series is that it should be done with real caution and respect for the main source material, which is the 130 episodes. WB does credit to Thundercats by stalling the much anticipated reboot franchise because up until now they haven’t found anything matching up the original series. I would’t go to see a poor work like the mediocre computer-generated action flick with a lame story-telling TMNT or the Transformers which was an ultimate pop-corn movie, effects-driven,unsophisticated imbued with many unnecessary,senseless scenes and an unconvincing plot. The only thing i liked were a few fight scenes and most notably Peter Cullen’s voice for Optimus, it was a genius move to bring him back to reprsise his voice-acting role.I do hope that the same will apply for Lion-o.. Thundercats shouldn’t be done as a sole purpose to appease hardcore fans who would accept passively anything.simply Fun-service will do damage to the long history of Thundercats and after such a long time of remaining untouched if something is to come out it had better be top-notch otherwise i’d rather not to be tamper with. What i’d like to see is a new but faithfull approach, i believe that cgi would fit :lionomad:more,something resembling to the upcoming movie,Avatar.
Do you think WB could still surprise fans with a ThunderCats movie in 2010? Last September they did mention the project was moving in a different direction, how long does it take to do a live action ThunderCats movie? Its live action or bust!
I wouldn’t opt for a live-action movie,it’s not like there aren’t the means or the necessary production but i believe it wouldn’t work so well and it will spoil the whole Thundercats image, one of the great assets the series managed to convey at the audience was the brilliance of the characters design and artwork. In a live-action movie even if the roles were to be played by top-notch,suitable actors the identification would be deficient,i really can’t imagine someone playing Lion-o and getting into the whole concept,animation’s foremost benefit is that you have ample artistic freedom and no boundaries at all,the only limit is your imagination. Even though it’s not the best example everybody will remember the huge flop Dolph Lundgren’s masters of the universe movie. I think it’s too early for a 2010 release and as a matter of fact with Thundercats, things have slowed down nearly 23 gears! why being in a rush now,especially if there isn’t anything good on the horizon!!:eek:
If that’s the case then i would love to see something good and new! But i am not so much into anniversaries and producing sth just to commemorate the birthday! I mean i am a huge halloween movies fun and i remember for a similar reason H20 coming out and didn’t up the ante…at all.
Anyway thundercats is a unique thing, we shall see…

If they had something planned, wouldn’t they start slowly rolling out merchandise, or airing the cartoon on basic tv channels in order to get people’s interest?
I don’t think they’re gonna surprise us w/ anything next year.
Yeah, i agree with that besides, no matter what most&major companies might be saying and keeping their lips sealed, unofficially when something leaks out, benefits them so much with all the hype going around that in the end it works better than advertising it!! i thing that something similar happened this summer with ps3 slim and a video on youtube. We haven’t seen anything so far relating to Thundercats but for fun made videos. If they were to come out, it would have already caught our eyes, that’s why i don’t expect anything in the near future…
I won’t worry if the movie’s on hold. That could mean a number of things, but it’s highly preferable to a poorly done rush job. Frankly, I wouldn’t trust Warner Brothers as far as I can throw them, but I’ll be content if they work out whatever kinks need to be worked out before they make the film. If they shelve the project instead, then no harm has really been done because there won’t be a terrible ThunderCats movie to embarrass us all and make us wish it had never been made in the first place. There will be all that fan fiction and fan art as consolation, and I’d rather read a well-written T-Cat fan-fic than see a rotten T-Cat movie any day.
I was wandering if WB is having in mind a brand-new animated series,full blown, with many episodes and maybe many seasons instead of a movie project. I believe that in the long run a new series is the next thing we will see coming up. Certainly with movies there is much more hype going around and worldwide attention but consider that THUNDERCATS being in limbo for such a long period, almost 25 years! young generations haven’t seen, heard,played,or known anything and generally what they are about. I mean a have a 10 years old brother who wouldn’t even be aware of Thundercat’s existence if i hadn’t talked and showed him the dvds. In reality, children today aren’t familiar at all with the concept and there aren’t any stimulants around that will introduce them to their grandeur. More LIKELY they would have heard of Bob the Spongemaster than Lion-o(what a disaster!!!) :lionomad:Zero input at some basic present resources like TV,books,advertisements,toys,Video Games,music-ost,comics,magazines and more constitutes Thundercats a beloved reminiscence of a bygone era..Nowadays there isn’t a single thing that will spark someone’s interest to get acquainted with the whole theme. And i believe that everybody agrees that the recent dvds are 90% oriented for nostalgia reasons to the older fans. How many 15 years old are going to buy them for instance? So my conclusion is that WB as a leading company is thinking first and foremost what move is profitable, it would be much more clever to ignite young people’s interest with a reboot and afterwards produce a movie relying on older as well as fresh believers… I don’t thing that out of the blue a movie will come just to satisfy a small part of the audience.Anyway that’s my thoughts,we will see what future has in store…:sneaky:
