If the movie was on hold last September,why are we hearing about this news now?
My next take on this whole situation is that:
1)The movie will not be CG(maybe WB has other plans as they are not confident in CG at the moment),maybe a live action feature.
2)From a marketing stanpoint,first WB should focus on a new animated series to introduce a new generation,then toys,and possibly a movie!
WOW! Sad news indeed! But I don’t think the fan community will take this lying down! I saw we get VOCAL like other fan communities do! :mad:
-Look what fandom has done for properties like Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, Masters of the Universe, ect. I WILL NOT believe that if we don’t-intelligently & rationally gather our forces and band together that we can’t make something happen. If not a big screen film, maybe a straight to DVD movie to test the waters? Is there people that was can write to? Petitions that we can sign? Something? There’s GOT TO BE!!! I’m gonna be CRAZY busy this week with the Chicago Comicon, but after that, I really think we should get a movement started. I know people at Mattel, as well as other people who run HUGE sites, so hopefully we can get the word spread!!! Sorry about the rambling, but I’m sick & tired of 'cats fans getting treated like red-headed stepchildren…no offense, Lion-O! :lionomad:
A lot of movies get cancelled without any announcement whatsoever. The news that the movie was put on hold was only relayed to me because of the leaked concept art. Had the artwork not been leaked, we probably would not have heard anything.
My source named Clone Wars as a reason why the movie could have been put on hold; however, I’d put more emphasis on Speed Racer than anything else. Speed Racer was produced and distributed by WB and was a box office failure. The budget of the movie was $150M and it made less than 60M in the US. That was suppose to be one of WB’s flagship summer movies last year and it totally bombed. Had it not been for The Dark Knight, the WB would have been bleeding money. The Clone Wars was probably the best comparison to ThunderCats though because of the CGI similarities.
In all honesty, the project is on hold; it’s not outright cancelled. It could still move forward, but the economy as well as other movies similar to ThunderCats (ie, the MOTU movie) need to be box office hits.

How the crud could they do this to us?!? They’ve been teasing us for years about this movie and just when we think things are finally starting to roll they shelve it??? And the only reason being because of the poor box office figures of The Clone Wars! Come on – The Clone Wars tanked because it sucked, not because people don’t like CG movies anymore! I mean, the Disney/Pixar movies are still going strong! :mad::lionomad::cheetaramad:
Maybe it’s a good thing. Weren’t we all worrying that the movie would not only not be the best it could be, it would make a mockery of the entire show that we all hold so dear? Hopefully, with the project shelved, they can take enough time to give it the love and attention it deserves and not just rush it out to make a few quick bucks.
T-Cat has some good ideas. Hopefully, they will come out with a live-action film or an animated series or a new toy line first. Let’s all hope and pray that they listen to us and do what’s best for the show. And that it comes soon.
Well, the good news is that it’s not TOTALLY scrapped, just on hold. Yeah, I guess the Clone Wars didn’t do well at the BOX OFFICE, but it’s done pretty darn good on TV. Not to mention the merchandise! There’s a TON out there, and I don’t know about anybody else, but when I see pegs full of new Clone Wars figures and ships and stuff, I got back the next day and it’s pretty much empty. I wouldn’t call that a TOTAL FAILURE!
Well I am not surprised. WB has blundered a lot of projects lately and they are very cautious now about what they decide to produce.
I assume since WB owns the Thundercats “empire” so to speak, they would let Mattel release a new line of figures. Get us fans buying and new fans interested in the product, THEN produce a new movie or animation. Get some freakin hype going for gods sakes and make some money off a new line of figures while your at it.
But then again what do we know, right?:rolleyes:
Man, the more I think about it, the more Speed Racer screwed a TON of franchises. That’s WB’s excuse for EVERYTHING it seems. “Yeah, we know TONS of people would go see a Thundercats movie, but that’s what we thought about Speed Racer” GRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Stupid kid and his monkey! :lionomad:
You know I didn’t think Speed Racer was all that bad. Not a movie I would run out and buy or anything but not bad either. I saw it on Blu Ray and the visuals alone were mind blowing.
Then again that is the main problem IMO with movies these days. They spend so much freakin money and time in the special effects department that no one bothers to check if the plot is any good.
Max Payne is a perfect example of this. Jeebus did that movie suck and yet they spent a ton in the special effects dept. I couldn’t finish it, I had to take it out and return it it was so bad.
Some of my favorite movies have cheesy special effects due to the era in which they were made (80’s), but it doesn’t matter because the plot/story is good.
What ever happened to really good plots/stories?
Yeah I think the ThunderCats fans have been very patient with WB and their lack of any activity with the license. If they aren’t going to do anything with the license, might as well sell it so that some other company can make money off of it.
I still think we are going to get something new (aside from the statues). I’ve been saying it for a couple years now, but whether it’s a new animated series or a new toy line, I think WB is on the verge of rebooting the franchise. As much as we hate to see changes to the characters, I think the design choices seen in the concept art show that it IS possible for the license to move in a different direction without totally changing everything. Yeah, there will be things we won’t like, but they won’t be able to please everyone.
I’ll just point to Mattel’s interest in ThunderCats as proof that companies still think the license is viable.
As a side note, I still have more content to share with everyone regarding the concept art. It’s bittersweet, but again, there is still hope. 
Exactly, and I think that some proof IS starting to trickle out. First, the Hard Hero statue. Although it’s a “collector’s item”. this at least means that someone at WB still knows that the franchise is ALIVE and that there’s a DEMAND for product-beyond t-shirts, wristbands and belt buckles. Here’s hoping!
I’m not upset about the movie being in limbo. I think a new TV series is a better idea for something lacking in new content for several years. Maybe branch out into comics again to help push it.
THAT’S LION-O?!!! I’m glad it’s on hold! Praise the execs at WB! At least someone’s got their skull cap on!
One of the worst things about Speed Racer being a failure is that it’s look was right out of the cartoon. If Hollywood needed anymore reason to stray from the source of the properties it adapts to the big screen it’s that when one of the times they faithfully do so, it’s a bomb. This is the same place where if one hit movie is an adaptation of a TV show, a remake of horror movie, or a prequel, they force out a ton more usually 10 times worse than the movie that spawned the trend. Hollywood is not known for creativity or brilliant decisions. If we ever do get a Thundercats movie, I hope it’s closer to the original show in story and look than most of the comic/toyline movies we’ve already received.

I for one, think the concept art and the new lion-o redesign for the on-hold movie is brilliant. I think the models are a great re-imagining of the line. Very mature and modern. I’m disappointed to hear its on-hold. I’m ready to sign a petition!
When I saw this I was glad too. They can update, but need to keep it closer to the familiar. Lose the GI combat boots. More mane and a little more human nose.

I agree with you; though I never seen Stars Wars, and I want to heard updated news but I would have to wait :lionomad:
