I bought the first season on DVD and my 5 year old son and 8 year old daughter LOVED the show; so weve been lookin forward to the premier of the new series! 20 minutes into the show my son says, “Daddy, I like this one better.” ..and I think I like the new one better too. Of course, the old one still brings back my childhood, and the new Lion-O cant replace the old one. I think his voice was much more powerful; and I liked his voice better than any other show Ive watched with hero’s. It was the perfect voice for the character and that cant be replaced. ..Thats my only dislike about the new series, even though I knew it was gonna happen.
My 8 year old told me after Clauduis was killed, “In the old show you know the mutants were never gonna win. sometimes its kinda boring.” And I have to agree with her on that. ..and thats why I think this series is going be a better show. No, it cant replace the original characters (I liked the old snarf) or Lion-O’s voice; but I think this will be a better overall show and go into a little more detail about the characters than the original series. I just think theres so much more potential for the characters and storylines that the old series never used; so Im excited and cant wait till next friday. …Im just really gonna miss the old characters and voices. ..So theres my 1st post rambling! lol
I will try make more of these comparions as the series goes on. At the moment im trying to find some old episodes and compare aswell. The one i used there was from the intro so.
Welcome, Sooner5900! Are you aware that the voice of Lion-O in the original series is the voice of Claudus in the new series, Lion-O’s dad? I loved when he shouted “ThunderCats Ho!” in the premiere with the sword in his hand.
I agree with you about missing the old voices. Having grown up with that cartoon as a kid, those voices are etched in my memory. My absolute favorite voice in the old series was Tygra. The new Tygra doesn’t have the same gravelness in his voice. But he is a younger Tygra I suppose. At times, I find it hard to distinguish his voice from Lion-O if I’m not seeing the one on screen talking.
Will Friedel does a bang-up job giving the ThunderCat battle-cry, and as the series progresses I have no doubt he will tweak and fine-tune the call to give it even more power; the growl in his voice is already doing that. But for me Larry Kenney has to come out on top because his Lion-O makes the battle-cry sound like it’s coming from the marrow of his bones and the very depths of his soul. :liono
The old, “HO!” seems to have been waking the sword to action (or shooting lasers…?) while the longer chant was for more powerful effect. Although, putting that much thought into it is assuming WAY too much consistency I think…
In the new show, we’ve not heard Lion-O just say “HO!” and I’m guessing that we won’t. I’m assuming that as a concession to let them scream “HO!” throughout a children’s cartoon in 2011 was that it ALWAYS be paired with “Thundercats!” We’ve seen Claudus in the pilot and Lion-O in Episode 3 say, “Thundercats, HO!” when “waking” the sword in situations where the original series Lion-O would like have just said, “HO!”
Ya know, got chills from both. Watching the OS on boomerang, i was all ooodalali, O_O Lion-O… drool But then the new one was whhoooo nice.. good going Will. I enjoyed hearing both of them do the call in one action packed hour. Will has to do the extended version for a while, because like in the OS Lion-O has to build up to the quick power draw abilities. To be honest though, it wasn’t the call that gave me the biggest thrill in the new opener, it was when Lion-O came to rescue his father and Tygra, sitting proud on that riding beast, all his “foolishness” paying off. That’s a real Lion-O moment if you ask me. :liono
Yeah, as soon as Claudus started to talk I was like “HEY! thats Lion-O!” lol ..Loved it that he was back on the show, even if it was for that one episode. I tried to keep myself in the dark as I didnt want any spoilers to the premier other than pictures of the new characters!
What I miss the most from the OS (and think the new ones kind of lack of it) were the facial intentions in the charaters, which revealed their feelings and intentions. In the OS, everything in the characters: gestures, expressions, pose, eyes, mouth, everything gave you a hint of what they were thinking or feeling.
Now I almost feel (and this is only me) that they lack of it. The characters have been drawn too simple IMO, like too Japanese (no offense), too metrosexual and elegant maybe, but with no really expressions. As if they have been botoxed lol.
I totally agree. When watching the OS I’m always amazed at the animation, the expressions, so vivid. Heck, sometimes I’ll pause it and study it for a moment. I draw a lot. The new animation does lack a sort of in depth feel to it. It’s not horrible, but i can see the Ben 10 animator influence. Especially in the bombs the lizards were placing all over Thundera. The little black global balls that the missile sought out.
