ThunderCats Episode 23 "Recipe For Disaster" OFFICIAL TALKBACK THREAD!

Is he really jumping around? It’s not like he pulled out chocolates and flowers the day he met her. He has gotten to know her first. Enough that he can actually name what he likes about her. He’s not just using her as a filler to replace Cheetara. Personally I wanted to get a few hints here and there and then a reveal during the finale, but this isnt so bad either.

We’ll have to agree in disagree

To me, it feels a little rushed for him. I know it is a cartoon and we can’t wait 80 eps for the relationship to grow, but until “Curse of Ratilla” there was a hint he still ahd feelings for Cheetara, or he thought he still ahd them. I also know time is supposed to pass from one ep to the other.

I might be wrong though.

I agree with you. It’s not like they’re 100% together as of now, so we still have some time for more development. But to say he was all over her from the beginning isn’t accurate.

Lion-O’s had 10 episodes to get over Cheetara. That’s as much time as he had to fall for her in the first place. People can and do start dating soon after they meet and quite often people aren’t totally over someone until they start liking someone new.

Not only that but unlike Cheetara he doesn’t see Pumyra as something he just deserves. He’s trying to earn her affection while also trying to figure out where he stands with her romantically speaking. He’s tried talking to her but she’s still so closed off and no-nonsense it’s hard to make any sort of progress.
A lot of fans thought that it would be Pumyra pursing Lion-O only for him to remain oblivious and overly cautious to advoid getting hurt again, but instead the writers went the opposite direction (and more power to them). This way it shows that Lion-O is not only well and truly over Cheetara, but has grown and matured enough to recognize what he wants an likes in a girl in order to pursue a relationship. It also means he’s able to “get back on the horse” so to speak and he’s not afraid of being hurt again. After everything he’s been through that’s the least of his worries.

In three occasions in the OS, first with Silky, with the Vampire Mermaid and then the Key-stone,Tygra was influenced so easily and became addicted without any resistance to the stone’s magic power. The big issue which picked my interest to form my opinion about Tygra’s mysterious side was because no other member who was near to these external stimuli was controlled by it, and neither fell victim right away to the hallucinatory ingredients. Tygra on the other hand proved weak and carried under the bad influence. On top of that, he seemed to enjoy every part of his addiction even if it meant acting harmful to the Cats. This description had nothing to do with ‘Recipe of Revenge’ which depicted Tygra more like a goofy-drunk.
Of course the whole addiction thing was handled much better and interesting by the old set of writers.

As for the relationship, i still believe it was the wrong time and place to focus on.At this point Lion-O has progressed and after the Trials has convinced us he has taken seriously the mantle of Lordship. I agree with Tygrarules:

. The first 15 eps. was the ‘coming of age phase’ and the love affairs were fitting but now i expect him to react as an adult who has responsibilities.

Some people aren’t as mature when it comes to relationships as they are with everything else. Lion-O is one of them. His ability to tell that his flirting wasn’t working and that he should just be himself, however, shows maturity in itself.

I’ll give you that, by his moderate, dare even say defeatist, stance Lion-O’s character becomes more approachable to the wider audience who can relate with the protagonist’s hardship. This technique is mainly used to the Japanese Shonen Anime and it’s a way of evolving along with the hero.
I accept that as a modern style storytelling and has its good points, the 80s super uber characters inwardly and outwardly as well belong to a bygone era and it’s old-fashioned

Well, Loredore, while I differ with you on the matter of the Lion-O/Pumyra relationship, I do hope that in the following episodes things start moving much further. For example, I would like for there to be some mention, at least, of the construction of The Cat’s Lair.

Me too. When/if (hopefully when) a second season comes, I hope they have some side arc where they are rebuilding Thundera.

Even when I agree with you, i think you’re a little hard on OS Tygra by calling him weak among the TCs. You said none of the other TCs were influenced by those stimuli, but it’s ebcause they didn’t get as close as Tygra to those stimuli. Let’s check it:

[ul]
[li]Silky’s fruit: Tygra was the only one to recieve it.[/li][li]Vampire-mermaid: I think her singing only affected men (her being a mermaid), so Cheetara was out of that one. Also, I think Tutrmagar said somehtring about them being invulnerable to her singing. That kleft only Lion-ño and Tygra. Would you have expected the Lord of the TCs to not be able to resist it.[/li][li]Keystone: again, it was only Tygra the one exposed to it. Lynxo and Lion-o only got contact to it throught Tygra.[/li][/ul]
Also, I think the writers usually chose Tygra for these ocassions because there was no other candidtae for that. Again, let’s check it:

[ul]
[li]Lion-o: again, seriously, the Lord of the TCs? He should be able to resist that.[/li][li]Cheetara: can you imagine the 1980’s feminists (no offense) if the gang’s lady was the addicted one? It would have portraited her as weak in an era where the woman’s role and strenght was revalued.[/li][li]The tiwns: no way they would use kids for that.[/li][li]That only left Pantrho, and even when it would have been interesting to see the mighty one fell victim of any of those stimuli, he was a fan favorite, so no way.[/li][/ul]
So I think Tygra was the writer’s choice due to their lack of choice

On the other hand, I think that without thinking about it, they gave Tygra’s character a new, interesting dimension, being him the one whose character was about control… a dark side as you said, but I don’t think they planned it that way in terms of traits or personality.

I totally respect your excitement for the Love interest guys, please don’t mean to sound cheeky.Besides i belong to the fans who really loved and enjoyed moments in the OS like when Cheetara says emphatically in a coquettish way for Lion-O: ‘And what a handsome one’-(Exodus) or '‘In all that Glitters’ where Lion-O hugs and lifts Cheetara upwards while salaciously staring her…

My only concern is not to monopolize the story this love affair, so far thery have handled it good but emphasis must be laid on Lion-O’s skills as a leader and Lord of the Thundercats

My 2 cents..

I understand the concern. I had this same concern for Young Justice when it came out, but it was handled well. Like you said, it has been going along nicely in the past few episodes, and there’s not much they could do now to screw it up since we got past the “flirting phase”.

I’d strangle myself if they start calling them: Lord Lion-O and his Queen Pumyra:mad:

That sounds like an 80’s thing, I think. I highly doubt we’ll see that. Now, some teasing by the fellow cats calling her the “queen” I can see (especially from Tygra), but to call them that would be so stupid, and I have no doubt that they won’t do that.

I agree. Even though it’s a show for children, that doesn’t mean it has to be immature and silly to appeal to them. I think the capacity of children to appreciate and understand adult themes and emotions is, and has been, grossly underestimated by cartoon makers.

I was one of those hoping for the former, because that seemed to be more consistent both with the evolution of Lion-O’s character and what we know about Pumyra. In particular, I thought the fireside moment would have been the perfect opportunity for “something” to happen, but in a different way.

I would rather Lion-O had seen her sitting alone at the fire and approached her, as a concerned king, and asked her what was wrong…rather than trying to drug her into talking to him. Then she could’ve told him how she feels alone and not appreciated, to which he could wisely and maturely respond with something like, “You said I would be a great king because of my compassion…you are a great person because of your passion. It’s what makes you special.” And then you’ve got a slam-dunk for a mushy moment there that makes both of them look good, and enriches their characters, rather than the hijinks that ensued with puffy faces and what-not.

Meh, it’s still Thundercats and I’ll take what I can get.

I am still thinking our confirmation of their relationship will be nice and mushy. All we have now is Lion-O being completely swept up by her and a kiss, so when they finally confess their feelings (I’m betting season finale) they’ll make it nice and serious. I’m expecting a really nice scene between the two, because we’ve lacked those so far. It’s not a writing flaw, but it’d be nice to see some moments with them alone where Lion-O is being romantic instead of childish and Pumyra listening and saying her feelings too.

I don’t see anything immature about what lion-o did. Cheetara made it seem like she was interested him but out of the blue goes for tygra. Ok that is fine, no commitments were made anyway. Then lion-o meets a girl he actually wants to put effort into pursuing. Nothing wrong here.

That’s what I’m saying. His flirting at first seemed boyish but it just showed how taken away he is with her.

Although I like the Lion-O/Pumyra relationship, I’m interested in Pumyra talking to the other ThunderCats.
