The weekly ratings thread

Last saturday’s episode “The Pit” got a 1.6/7 or 1.85 million viewers ages 6-11.

It’s weird. I know more people around high school age that watch this show than 6-11 year olds. It seems like they should have the ratings based on all ages.

They should have/show the ratings for all ages but unfortunitly they do not.

I absolutely agree. It just seems so short sighted. I mean I wonder how high the rating would go if you took into account ALL ages and ALL media (such as downloads and PS3 network and so on.) More to the point, how the hell do they distinguish what age is watching anyway?

I think they only look at certain demographics because that’s what the companies buying ad time are looking at. Generally you don’t care that a 40 year old is watching the show if you’re trying to sell a toy to a 8 year old.

Which I understand is a fair point, but it still seems limited, I mean why not include ALL the demographics, even if the one you are aiming your toys at is 8 - 11 years old. You will still know that the adverts are reaching those 8 - 11 years old as a percentage of the whole demographic, but hey guess what, some of thos 11 - 16 year olds may want the merchandise too, or what about the adult collectors and 80s fans who are on a complete nostalgia buzz, we may get a bit of income from them too. Focus on a specific demographic by all means, but widen the net as well.

The Opinion of AnonymousIncognito

I’m starting to get worried with the ratings doing a rollercoaster ride.

They’re still doing fine. From what I’ve seen, it’s still one of the top cartoons for its timeslot and beats out several of CN’s highly-advertised shows.

That’s absolutely right. Not just for its timeslot, for the whole network.

The ratings aren’t rollercoasting at all, they’ve spiked for certain epic episodes, but the general ratings are still high.

Still 1.85 million is kinda low compared to what it has gotten on several other episodes. If i’m not mistaken “The Pit” had even lower.

I’m not really worried. I actually check ratings of other shows more often than this one just to see how bad they are doing in comparison. Trust me, you’d be surprised. A lot of shows are doing much worse and still get renewed.

Yes that’s true. Funny when Thundercats some episodes ago did better then even new episodes of BEN 10 T_T

Some hidden power behind Thundercats.

Agreed. The show is fine ratings-wise. It’s just a question of how much the success of the toyline will factor into the renewal. The ratings are the last thing I’m worried about.

That’s the big question, HOW MUCH it will factor in. I agree that the toy sales are an important factor, but only one of many, it certainly isn’t the one single overiding factor that decides the series fate as some posters would have us believe. Plus we have to remember with a complete absence of any official sales statistics for TC toys compared to other toys, we have to speculate a little but I think the line is doing well here in the UK at least, well enough for them to justify a ton of other merchandise including a DS game in the summer. The ratings are great with statements that they are NOT cancelled, the toy line is doing well enough (would be better if Bandai got their act together) and a load more merchandise is out or due out. I’d say that looks promising.

I think Comic-Con will be a decent indicator of Thundercats continued existence. If Wave 3 is coming (which would probably include Addicus, Kaynar, and Pumyra) we should see it here (or at least concepts/prototypes). If we get a third wave the show will most likely continue beyond the 52-episode order.

Actually it does. The cartoon is driven by the toy sales, which help to fund the production of future episodes. Without the toys and merchandise it’s unlikely the cartoon would continue. I’m guessing they do get something from advertising revenue on CN, but the majority would be funded by the the toy sales. So yes the toy sales DO dictate whether further episodes are made or not.

I don’t disagree that the toys/merchandise are important, I actually said as much. I just do not think they are the ONLY factor. Toy sales are ONE important factor in the franchise continuing yes, but they ALONE do not dictate dictate whether further episodes are made or not. Either way, as I said, we have nothing to worry about. Toy sales are doing well, merchandise sales are doing well, the comic is selling as well as any other ben 10/transformer/etc comic, there is a load of new merchandise is due out in the summer including a computer game, etc, etc, etc, and as for the reason behind this thread, the ratings are excellent. Now, I know you don’t like the new series blackiecats, but I’m sorry, from that it looks like it will be around for a while yet!
Merged Post:

I think we’ll get a third wave regardless in time. But I’m hoping that they go beyond the 52 episode order too. The franchise has more than proved its mettle despite bandai and WB and CNs **** ups, and is more than worthy to continue into a third and fourth season at least.

I love the new cartoon series! I have no idea what made you jump to that conclusion  But yes, without great toy sales, it’s unlikely the cartoon will continue. The toy sales fund episode production. This is FACT. Animation isn’t cheap to produce!

Also I’m afraid even if UK sales are excellent, it’s just not enough to support the production. We need mass USA retail in order for that to happen. Hopefully we will see wave 2 hit mass retail in the USA over the coming months and sales will continue to be good

I’ve heard the toy sales over there are pretty good (being an ignorant American I’m pretty uninformed). Overall, if the ratings stay the same, I think we still have a good chance of a second season, especially if the episodes have been ordered already. I think the only reason CN is “skeptical” of a second season is because they want to fund their other, somewhat more popular shows. Let’s be honest; they barely advertise any of the action shows with a target audience of over 10 years old. Tell me the last time you saw a Young Justice commercial when DC Nation wasn’t on?

Which brings me to another point; not every CN show has a successful toy line. Have you seen any Young Justice toys? (sorry for using the same show, but it has some of the same problems as ThunderCats when it comes to advertising/ratings) I live in an area where the show is actually quite popular, so I guess I don’t see the real bulk of the problem.

Just to summarize, I think we’ll just have to wait and see when it comes to the toys. The show, if it maintains its good ratings, will most likely be renewed. I still have that little spark of doubt, but I’ve put my faith way too far in to give up now.

I want the show so much to go beyond 52 episodes.
