The question specifically asked about the cats in the underground shelter. Lots of casual watchers won’t really differenciate between “Thundercat” and “Thunderian.” Especially since there hasn’t been any clear definitions of “Thundercat” in the show itself.
That’s the difference of having a whole planet vs a walled-off city. It is easy to guess that there were some random survivors that had ships when you are talking about an entire planet. But when you see the main bunker take a direct hit with the doors still wide open, there is little hope.
Still, there is a chance to have at least some survivors in this series.
And just think in TOS the entire planet of Thundaria was destroyed by the Dark Sword of Plundaar. But yet still there were other Thundarians that made it out before the apocalypse. I’m sure it’ll be the same for TNS no doubts!
I’m sure we’ll see more survivors as the series goes on. The ones that weren’t enslaved are probably just in deep hiding, because they can’t defend themselves against their enemies and don’t want to be killed or enslaved themselves.
Wasn’t it mentioned that Lynx-O, Pumyra and Bengali would make their apperances in the new series? I mean, we got a glympse of Lynx-O in the series premiere, and Claudus mentioning him in “Old Friends.” To kill them off just doesn’t seem right. Jaga I can understand because in the original series, he died of age, when piloting their damaged ship to Third Earth. In the new series, he sacrificed himself.

Slythe seemed pretty sure they had killed the majority of the Thunderian population. I would guess probably something like two or three hundred survivors were ethier taken prisoners, or fled to the hills. (including Lynx-o, Pumyra, and Bengali) The majority of the population was most likely killed during the invasion.
I think that decimating the city wiped out most of the population, but some, a small percentage, were lucky, and hid and survived. WilyKit and WilyKat said they thought they were the only ones left, but that could be just that they didn’t find any other survivors because they were so well hidden and didn’t come out when they heard others about, not knowing who they were or if it was safe.
Also, there were a lot of fields around the city, so you can assume that some cats lived in the rural outskirts. Odds are that they ran for safety as soon as they saw the lizards coming, and thus, survived the attack.
I’d have to watch again to be sure, but wasn’t Lynx-O’s tower outside of the city? Perhaps it wasn’t destroyed as thoroughly as the rest of the city was, and that’s how he survived.
