Should it be called thundercats? Lots of negativity in here!

It has close to nothing to do with thundercats. Jelenic just used the same names, places etc but it’s entirely differen tto the OS. It was called thundercats to sell it, to gather interest. “Legacy” has put it in a direction that alienates it from the original.
Then they also put in characters from other shows as a selling point to gather even more interest

What started out promising ends up in dissapointment. It’s a tale of lion’o versus mumm-ra with truckloads of side characters just to fill the screen. I was initially anticipating epic battles and a final showdown off lion-o vs mumm-ra (in one of the last ep’s) but they already fought eachother 3 times and there is nothing left of mumm-ra, he gets beaten cheaply all the time "you don’t know what your dealing with " mumm-ra says but he gets beaten by a cub just because he is wielding a strong sword.

Choreagraphy of the battles could have saved the show but they are just bland and uninteresting.

  • not enough of slythe and where the hell are the other mutants, they should also be a team like it was in the OS
  • where are the crazy inventions, crazy weapons?
  • why replace the creepyness of castle plun-darr ,the pyramid etc with shiny tech?
-the tank got introduced only to dissapear

Last but not least, mumm-ra and co were supposed to be a big threat but Panthro beats up an entire lizzard army with ease. Mumm-ra was menacing, slythe was a big baddy but it only lasted 2 episodes…

I was just expecting an updated version of the old show not an entirely different one

It is supposed to be different, why would you wanna watch the same thing twice? Rather why make what was already made especially when it comes to television and films? Everything will come with time, the mutants will come, the tank will be used more OFC. The series has hardely even begun, the major backstory has been told and we now know what Lion-O has to do.

- Gather the stones.

  • Unite the races
  • Stop Mumm-Ra

I’m tired of you people who bash this series in regard to the old one. Just watch the OS if you want the OS, saying it again WHAT IS THE POINT OF MAKING THE SAME THING TWICE? I love both series for what they are. The NS still retains stuff so you know it’s Thundercats, the start has been slow but i really think it will pick up soon. That stuff about Mumm-Ra beaten to death. He got his ass kicked in the OS in EVERY episode? Can i say that? If not every then pretty much ALL OF THEM, that dissregarding Arc episodes which has many parts.

You want to know the best part? If you don’t like it. DON’T WATCH IT! Not to be mean, are you an 80´s dude? Cause most of them just bash the new series without even thinking what they are typing nor saying and trust me i let people have their own opinion but when they are wrong and just makes no sense you have to get it told to you. YOU my friend are blinded by nostalgia.

Also note that i don’t say you are an idiot or anything nor do i think you are. If you take any of this offensive i’m sorry.

Lion-O defeated Mumm-Ra in their first encounter in the OS by chance because Mumm-Ra happened to see his reflection in Lion-O’s claw shield.

In the NS, Mumm-Ra wasn’t able to turn into the ever living form in the first encounter, so he fled (smart move). In the 2nd fight in the Tower of Omens episode, Jaga intervened to save Lion-O because he knew Lion-O was not ready for the fight.

Reading your post, I get the idea that you just want them to take the OS and redraw them like the new show and use the same stories.

It would have been kind of hard to use the thundertank to go through the mountain with all the booby-traps. Well I guess they could have deus ex machina with the tank and crawled up and over the mountain and go to the tower of omens.

I think some of us are blinded by nostalgia. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the OS and still love the OS, but watch it now, and quite a bit of it is very cheesey and childish, etc.

it will show up again. They’ll need another toy plug.

We’re on episode 7 out of a 52 episode story. They’re still setting things up.

The current crew is giving us a fresh take on the Thundercats mythos. Don’t like it? Stop watching. Easy as that. Complaining about it here isn’t going to change the direction of the show, they already have 52 episodes of story planned.

they already fought eachother 3 times and there is nothing left of mumm-ra, he gets beaten cheaply all the time "you don’t know what your dealing with " mumm-ra says but he gets beaten by a cub just because he is wielding a strong sword.

Are we watching the same show? They’ve fought twice (the third encounter was technically Leo and it could be argued that he was stronger as Leo) and neither time did Lion-O “Beat” him. The first encounter was interrupted by the sun and the second he was saved by Jaga.

  • not enough of slythe and where the hell are the other mutants, they should also be a team like it was in the OS

Seven. episodes. in.

If anything you should be psyched that you got to see the monkey and jackal races in “Legacy”, but I guess complaining is more fun.

  • where are the crazy inventions, crazy weapons?

Do the Thundercats look like they are in a position to take the time and make weapons for themselves? They’ve been trying to beat Mumm-Ra to the book, no time for such things.

-the tank got introduced only to dissapear

You’re right, they should totally use a giant drill to bring the Thundertank to the Tower of Omens just so you can see it. They don’t have room to maneuver it there or anything, but at least you’ll see it, right? You will see the tank when the story permits it. You also saw a whole squad of Thundertanks in “Legacy”.

Last but not least, mumm-ra and co were supposed to be a big threat but Panthro beats up an entire lizzard army with ease. Mumm-ra was menacing, slythe was a big baddy but it only lasted 2 episodes…

Yeah, the mutants were a huge deal in the OS. They didn’t beat a group of them in the first episode or anything.

And for the record Panthro didn’t beat an entire army. He beat a squad. Or maybe a platoon at best.

I don’t want to seem like I am inciting an argument, but I love the new series. I can’t wait for an actual DVD release where I can watch it straight through. I think doing that will present a clearer picture. I think this series has two unfortunate points:

  • Too continuous: What I mean by this is that children don’t pay attention well to storylines that continue on for an entire season. I LOVE continous cartoons, as they are basically the most interesting stories when a long arc is involved. However, I still remember shows like Pirates of Darkwater being literally abandoned because the old “if I haven’t seen the previous episode I wont know whats going on” mantra applied. I don’t really have an opinion on how to solve this.

  • The second point for me is that they don’t really address what a “Thundercat” is, and I am guessing this is the stem of the argument in this original post. In the OS, being a Thundercat was different than being a Thunderian, and a LOT of focus was placed on the Thundercat symbol. The NS does not really focus on this topic at all, and has yet just brushed it aside in favor of the storyline. I think if we had an episode that really cleared up this issue, then a lot more people would be focused to who the characters really are.

I have to disagree that “Legacy” put Tcats further off track from OS. I think it actually brought it more in line.

-T-cats and mutants stranded on third Earth
-Mumm-Ra’s pyramid travels through space.
-Battles in Space.
-Rebllion/opression

I’m not sure what kind of “Crazy inventions” you are looking for, but it seems par for the OS.

If there was anything that strays away from the OS is Ganmen Lion-O and Skirt Mecha Mumm-Ra Transformations.

Other than that I can’t see how the episode was not “ThunderCats”.

And I personally liked the Ganmen Lion-O thing..

My only complaint is that they are too overly focused on Lion-O and have underdeveloped the rest of the ThunderCats. If they would balance that out better then I would be enjoying this show a lot more.

Pet peeves…

I find “Whiskers” to be annoying.
I don’t care for their comedic punches, as I don’t really find them all that funny.

I don’t really see the gripes that some have associated with the new show. The reason why the beginning is going to be Lion-O centric is because, like the original, he is forced into becoming the Lord of the Thundercats under ridiculous circumstances that make all the other Thundercats have to take a back seat for a while.

In the original series the first few episodes was the destruction of Thundera (Just like this one) followed by the Thundercats realizing they have crash landed on a new plant that they need to inhabit (kinda like walking outside the walls of Thundera for the first time.) Then it was followed by the trials that Lion-O had to face in order to become Lord of the Thundercats by trying to beat all the other Thundercats at their best abilities. Instead of making it a complete copy the writers have decided that putting Lion-O on a hunt for the Book of Omens, and now, after the other stones of power to be the trial instead of a gauntlet that Lion-O had to face in the original.

The original series had little to no other character development and would always just end with Lion-O saying the moral of the story and moving on. I really enjoy how this series has a continuous story line and “Legacy” really has me excited to see what kind of alliance the Thundercats will make with the other animals (Slythe, Monkian and Jackalman) That is going to be very interesting.

One final note…Episode 7 of 52. Give the show some time.

Wow,

Well, I guess this is how a vintage oriented group of fans will always react when a line gets a reboot. Whether it is Transformers, He-man, Gi joe or anything else.

If you want to watch the old OS Thundercats, it as been released on DVD a couple of times. It had a toy line too. You can buy it on Ebay.

I think it is already great that Bandai went the extra mile with the 8" linr, which I love.

It is a reboot. Period. If you dont like it, dont watch it.
It clearly wasn’t meant for you. Actually, only the 8" line is meant for us adult fans.
This new line is meant for this generation of kids. Lets hope they will eat it up so tat it will not be cancelled and te more open minded adult fans can enjoy it (with their kids).

My kids never saw the vintage toons and I showed them clips of the OS after they saw the new toon. Just to show them what I grew up with. They preferred the new series A LOT more. I am sure it will be the same for most kids.
CN and Bandai are on the right route with this.

Just accept that it is a reboot and enjoy the ride!

I would like to just see some quality writing, and less bang bang shoot’em up. Along with character development, and better pacing, and , oh the list goes on and on…

MGP

For everybodys sake, that will come later!

Vintage group? What group are we speaking of? There’s one post against the show and the “group” is defending the new show.

@Rizefall

I’m absolutely a nostalgic person, I’m always thinking about the past but I give everything a fair chance. I’m not writing the show off I know it’s just the beginning and I will warm to the show eventually, afterall it got a solid start.

but they should amp up the choreography definately, that’s really poor and I would have done things differently, I really think Mumm-ra already lost his fear factor and that’s a shame.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Describe fear factor, he was never scary in the original as he made me scary. Or do you mean scary as dangerous? I think he is more dangerous here than the OS at least here he is doing them damage, things he almost never did before!

if something uses the same names, places, of something else then by definition it’s not entirely different. plus the shows have more things in common:

  1. as you mentioned the characters share the same names between both shows but they also share many of the same personality traits.
  2. mumm-ra is after the sword of omens in both shows.
  3. both shows feature the last remaining thundercats alive.
  4. thundera is destroyed in both shows.
  5. lion-o is learning how to be a true lord of the thundercats as he goes along in both shows.
  6. the themes of good vs evil aka mumm-ra vs lion-o, working as a team, helping others, being a proper and just leader are shared between both shows.
also just because something is different it doesn’t mean it’s not as good as whatever it differs from. there have been some major changes with the new show but the essence of the original is alive and well in this version.
lion-o and mumm-ra have really only faced off once, and that was in episode 6. in episode 7 that wasn’t lion-o it was his ancestor. think of it as the thundercat version of a holodeck.
and in the original series lion-o and mumm-ra faced off many many times in the first season. how many times have batman and the joker, megatron and optimus prime, snake eyes and storm shadow, the yankeees and the red soxs, and hal jordan and sinestro went up against each other…arch enemies tend to fight each other a lot.

I’m an huge Rankin-Bass series fan and LJN toy collector and even I admit that there are some aspects of the new cartoon I’m not thrilled with. However it is a reboot and a new take on the elements of the original show that made it stand out. Everything is not gonna be the same and there will always be vintage purists that dislike the changes. This ain’t nothing new.

Both sides of the coin should rejoice that the new series is more than 1000 times better than the New Adventures of He-Man
Merged Post:

100% agree. Despite some of the slight producion floors, WB Consumer Products and Bandai are definately on route and know what they are doing. Whoever gave the brief for the new series got it right 100%! The update is brilliant to get the Ben 10 kiddies hooked (so long as it gets a repeat at the kiddy friendly time slot…after school or saturday morning). It also retains enough of the original elements to keep the 80’s kids interested. If the 80’s fans were not interested they wouldn’t be here debating the quality  All in all WB and Bandai have done very well thus far in my opinion…
