Fair enough.
I’m actually kinda hoping that fan fiction writers will pick up the story and connect dots where the show fails to.
Right now, I’m feeling good about the show. They are off to a good start. Hopefully it continues that way.
You know what, I actually just thought of something. I know where Panthro is. He’s in the Berbil village!
Mumm-Ra & Grune left Panthro for dead and he was rescued by members of a society that are entirely technological. While healing, Panthro picks up the skills of a mechanic and BING BANG BOOM, we get the Thundertank!
I was joking about that the other day. But it makes sense. Plus Tower of Omens has to get built somehow (and somewhere). Maybe him hiding with them allows for a secret location for the tower to be built.
Sadly that won’t be the case… Most of what we’ll see will be badly written “stories” of self insert mary sues or just badly done shipping between the characters. DX
In other words. Most of the fandom will be stupid. But that’s like a rule now in every fandom. 8D
The main differences between a show and fanfiction are time, budget, and (frankly) TV executives.
Fanfiction writers would not be nearly as limited on what they can or cannot do as the writers for a TV show are. They also can go into a lot more detail on things like what the characters are thinking and feeling. Thats why even in movies adapted from books, the books are almost universally better.
They are completely different mediums.
I hope they show what happened between Grune and Panthro while they were searching for the Book of Omens. I’m sure there was a big disagreement about where their loyalties lie and an epic fight ensued.
Okay, I do have a question that I thought of from something I read in another thread…
Claudus, when he grabbed the sword, only cried “ThunderCats Ho!”
Lion-O, however, did the full, “Thunder! Thunder! Thunder! ThunderCats Ho!”
Why did Claudus only have to shout “ThunderCats Ho!” but not the three thunder’s that preceed it?
Just guessing here, but because he needed it faster?
Maybe. Another thought. When Lion-O summoned it, it shot out red energy. Did it do that for Claudus?
I think it was one part brute force by Claudus and one part ‘passing the torch’ to Lion-O. Lion-O’s was awfully drawn out, probably intended as such for his first time ever.
I think the “red energy” from Lion-O was the actual Thundercats signal while Claudus used the blade and a little lightning. It just hit Mumm-Ra, so we didn’t get to see it up in the air. Even in the OS it was known to be able to break holes in walls and stuff like that.
Also in the OS Lion-O would occasionally shorten the call when he was pressed for time. Same situation for Clawdus. I gather that a blast like Lion-O used would take more “powering-up” from the sword, thus the full call and all the motions.
Lion-O would shout “Ho!” to lengthen the sword without summoning the Eye. I wonder, since in the interview there was such an ordeal about them using the word “Ho!” if instead of just shouting “Ho!” they now have to shout “ThunderCats Ho!” So when Claudus shouted “ThunderCats Ho!” it was essentially the same as the original series when Lion-O just shouted “Ho!” to lengthen the sword.
I get the sense that Lion-O is already using the Sword of Omens on a more advanced level than Claudus ever did. Claudus sure didn’t seem to realize that Lion-O was using Sight Beyond Sight which makes me wonder if he ever had. Jaga’s comment that the greatest king possessing SBS was given a much broader meaning that just the sword’s powers, but it certainly could have encompassed that as well. Claudus seemed to be “brute forcing” the sword every time we see him use it, while Lion-O seems to be more contemplative or concentrating through that build up.
Of course my questions are: Where did Lion-O learn the chant? Why didn’t Mumm-Ra pop him before he got it off (he certainly had the chance and knew what was coming)? I’m very excited to see where they take the sword. I’m hopeful it doesn’t become a laser gun as it was in the OS. Energy surrounding it like Claudus had? Sure. But it would be nice if it was consistently used like a sword!
On some level I also think Claudus only shouted “Thundercats, Ho!” so that they could get Larry Kenney to say it one more time for us, which I am 110% on board with. ![]()
Sorry if this is a double post, my last was my 1st post and iT went thru to the mods first. So what do you all think of the new design of the sword of omens.I havent seen much discussion on this but i like the old design of The Sword of Omens better. In particular when it is in the short form. In the new series it looks like a small dagger and missing the side edges from the old. The New series Long sword is fine, i just dont like the design of it when its short.
Whata you guys think? Overall series is great.
Okay I’m not American and I’ve said some negative things about the new show, but then I’ve also said I like the new show. You don’t have to be against a show to see flaws with it, I can point out flaws in the original too, doesn’t mean I think less of it. Also I’m not going to blindly say yeah it’s back just because it’s had a reboot. Yes I’m glad it had a reboot but doesn’t mean I’m going to let it get away with things I don’t think are right. Just because someone doesn’t share your opinion there is no need to be rude, and yes I thought you were being rude. I personally agree with both sides of this argument but your comment really irritated me, sorry but it did.
Oh I think it’s clear he was a fan, and as ever fans don’t always agree on stuff so it’s fine that some of us don’t agree on what the new series should be.
I agree, give the show a chance, we’ve seen some stuff that gives hints on the background but it needs to explore the ideas more. I intend to wait and see before I judge the show. Oh and I won’t be comparing the new series with the original in terms of which is better, they’ll be too different in the same way the three series of He-Man are too different for me to say which is better. I will be judging on if it is a good show not how it matches up to the original. Not saying I won’t compare, just that the comparrison is not what I’m judging the show on, I’ll compare it to other shows too, but what matters is is it a good show in its own right.
I don’t really think it’s a purely American thing, Zakkie. I think in any fandom, there’s always going to be a segment that is going to be resistant to change irregardless of where they’re from. To wit, I’m here in the good ol’ U.S. of A and I’ve already gone on record about how much I love the new show.
But I’ve seen this kind of thing happen in almost every fandom: from Star Trek, to Star Wars, to Transformers, to He-Man, to Doctor Who, to Battlestar Galactica and so on and so forth. There will always be the “old guard” who believe that the original incarnation is unassailable and anything that comes after it will somehow sully it. I can’t say that in some cases their arguments aren’t without merit. Sometimes, though, I think there’s a fine line between passionately defending what you love and just being way too passionate that you can’t concede the originals may have had flaws that could be improved upon.
Or I’ll put it another way. I posted this once before: it’s from Ron Moore’s mission statement when he went to make the new Battlestar Galactica and was encountering some resistance from fans of the original. However, I think it can apply just as easily to a revival of a show like Thundercats. Here’s what he said… (altered of course to fit Thundercats)
Here lies a slumbering giant, its name known to many, its voice remembered by but a few. For a brief moment, it strode the Earth, telling tall tales of things that never were, then stumbled over a rating point and fell into a deep sleep.
I think there’s life in that old giant. But I think that just poking him with a stick and expecting him to leap to his feet and resume his journey as if no time had passed would serve only to hasten his final death throes. He needs a makeover. Especially that ['80s] hair.
So we’ve set out to bring the old boy back to life and give him a new look and a new outlook on life. And we’re going to ask him to tell his stories again, from the beginning. Tell them again, but this time go deeper. See, we were young once and when the old guy spun his tales of [Lion-O and Mumm-Ra], we were satisfied with clear-cut heroes and nakedly evil villains. But we’re older now. We’ve eaten a lot of popcorn over the years. We’re ready for a bigger meal. Make the story more complicated. Make the people less black and white. Challenge us, provoke us, grab us by the throat with those massive hands and dare us to invest ourselves in flawed characters who face ambiguous choices in an imperfect world. Dare us to root for heroes with all-too-human weaknesses. See if we’ll still embrace them if they fall prey to their imperfections.

Ask us to care for human beings instead of caricatures.
We believe you can explore adult themes with adult characters and still tell a ripping good yarn.
We believe that to portray human beings as flawed creations does not weaken them, it strengthens them.

We believe all these things and more.
If you agree with us, then this is the show for you. If not, then thanks for coming, but the popcorn is in a different aisle.
I think that pretty much says it all. ![]()

Merged Post:
And sadly, that seems to be true. I remember a time when fanfiction used to simply be just writing brand new, original adventures of your favorite characters. There are still some that continue this and do it very well, but by and large nowadays it has degenerated to what you’ve just described. I don’t know when this happened exactly, but you mention fanfiction now to people, you’ll get the almost same reaction you would as if you had said “furry.” It’s almost like it’s a dirty word now (And if no one believes me, check out the website Toplessrobot.com, which hosts a “Fan Fiction Friday” that showcases the absolute worst of the worst. I guarantee you’ll be wanting to gouge your eyes out and scrub your brain.)
I hope to see more non-main character survivors. After all the quote said “…to lead his peoples to victory over ancient spirits of evil”. problem is unless the cats have colonies/outposts or survivors, where will people come from.
Also hope to see Bengali and the others. bengali can have an actual warhammer instead of a small hammer.
Can’t wait for more either. Still want to see where they get their nre outfits from though.
I liked that part.
I was happy to see it…when I saw it was exactly the same as the original. When he struck the classic pose..Nostalgia made my chest swell and I think I actually shed a tear or two --I am gonna get that vectored. Yeahhhhh:thumbsup:
To be honest, up until that part I was whining about Larry Kenny not being the voice of Lion-O until Will did his ThunderCats HO bit and that sealed it for me. I APPROVE of this Lion-O
As for fans who feel like their childhood has been butchered, them I say. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU ACTUALLY TRIED TO WATCH ORIGINAL?!
I have the entire series, and I was delighted when I got and then I watched it. I couldn’t last a two full episodes and I realized that Lion-O was kind of retarded. No offense to the retarded intended. I mean yeah you could relate to him as Kid, I did. Now I am 36. What an eye-opener. That series had no direction and if you can sit through it now, you’re a better person than I am.
Personally I will take the new series over the original any day. It seems to have an actual purpose. There is a real story there. Sure the old series was iconic, this I won’t deny but I think a lot of people should take their nostalgia glasses off. I mean it could be worse. It could be like Voltron on Nicktoons. Oh god I shout “Kill me now, Kill me now” every time my sweet p watches it. (Heck I am trying to figure out, why he’s watching it at all) I actually wish they would have aired Voltron on Adult swim so they could make it darker, like the original series. You haven’t lived till you see Lothor kill Nanny (Bytch got on my nerves)
I am glad they revamped the old series and put a new spin on it. I just wish they didn’t make me dislike Tygra in the first episode. I liked Tyrgra. I was happy to see Lynx-O too. Give me Pumrya or death!!!
Yeah I fan girl hard I haven’t been this happy since Samurai Jack was airing. This new series, gave me hope that one day American animation will cease to suck and then I could watch animated series in English and not have to wait for English subs. Heck this is the first time I joined and posted on website that was devoted an American Series, in almost 10 years (I am an anime & manga fan)
I had high hopes for this new series and I wasn’t disappointed. Sure you can point out criticisms but I figure even the things you complain about, is still better than the original. I loved the original, I always will because that was a great part of my childhood but I am an adult now and this is more to my liking. Plus I am really diggin the new designs. 80’s Rockstar/Wrestler look played out a long time ago.
I wish He-man fared as well…
Oh God I’m already thinking of what ways they could introduce the other characters.
-
Ben Gali is a Thundarian Slave who eventually goes Conan on the Lizards and breaks free using his giant Thor like hammer. They could have him form his own group of Thundercats, maybe including Lynx-O & Jagara, maybe a could T-Cast allies like Snowman & Turmagar (members of races also imprisoned by Mumm-Ra), and maybe even some new characters (why should the writers restrict themselves to just the old show? Be creative!). And while the more familiar group has The Thundertank as their primary vehicle, the other group has The Thunderstrike. Eventually he butts heads with Lion-O & his group as by that late stage, neither headstrong & young T-Cat leader will want to take orders from the other, & they could say that Ben Gali’s group has become so autonomous that he refuses to recognize Lion-O as T-Cat Lord.
-
Pumyra could be the head of a secluded community of Thundarians who escaped the war. She uses her medical skills to heal all the sick & wounded who enter there, and decides that her community is a pacifist one and she has no desire to get involved in the war. Lion-O and the others must then convince her to help rid Third Earth of this threat.
-
I picture Monkians actually being a race of cave dwelling incompetents, that are pretty much just savage bullies towards weaker races, and easily submissive towards more powerful forces like Mumm-Ra. That’s probably similar to the Trollogs in the original series.
-
Jackalman…I have no idea why, but I picture him as a leader of a gang of mercenaries & bounty hunters. He has the look for it, so maybe that’s why. They could even use his gang as an excuse to squeeze in a couple more characters redesigned from the original show like maybe Mole Master, Driller, or maybe even take the chance to come up with brand new characters of their own making. And his having a position of power among mercenaries could be a nice nod to “Jackalman’s Rebellion”. They could do something where Mumm-Ra, Slythe, & Grune hire them to take out the T-Cats
-
If there is one thing I want them to keep in tact with Vultureman, its him as a mad scientist type. Have it revealed that he was the one that created and supplied the Lizards with all their mechs & hardware. They could have him reflect the darkside of Lion-O’s curiosity of technology. Where as Lion-O wanted to know more for the sake of discovery, Vultureman’s obsession is based on him wanting ultimate power.
-
Ratar-O I think should be a REALLY big deal if/when he’s brought in. I would use him as a conquering warlord of extreme magical might from an overseas kingdom (Kingdom of Plundarr perhaps?) who brings his vast army over to the mainland that we are current set in and gives both The Thundercats & Mumm-Ra’s armies a run for their money. And what can they use here? SWORD OF PLUNDARR!!! And once Ratar-O is killed off, Mumm-Ra takes possession of it.
-
I’ve got a cool idea for Hachiman. He’s the best swordsman in the world and he is charged with guarding the Book of Omens with his life, a duty passed down for generations of his family. When Lion-O finally reaches the Book of Omens, he has to duel and earn Hachiman’s respect to get it. Yeah I’m ripping off Indy 3: Last Crusade and various martial arts films, but hey. It’d be cool!
-
If they do go ahead and tie in the Tigershawks & Silverhawks, I think the obvious thing to do is to have them brought in along with matching Thundercats villains. Instead of using Mon-Star (who really was just a poor man’s Mumm-Ra, lets be honest), they could bring in the Silverhawks along with either Captain Shiner or The Lunataks (who have been strangely absent from discussions about this new show from the fans). Keep the space themed villains with the space themed guest heroes, right. Likewise, if there is a seabased adventure, who better to tie the Tigersharks in with than Hammerhand & The Berserkers?
My head is just swimming with ideas & possibilities. It really is kind of exciting to think about how this is all going to play out and trying to guess where we’ll see which characters.
A good portion of the comments here are positive with a few nit-picks. I’m sorry you have such hate for the 80s show. You stating that Americans can’t stand updates to old shows does sound rude the way you wrote it. Did you state your feeling to the hardcore fanboy idiots or just here?
The reason this reboot is here is because people LOVE the old show and it’s a way to attract new fans/old ones and make some money. That’s all the 80s cartoons were and it’s no different now. If they didn’t think it would sell it would not be on tv.
