New ways to use old ideas

I just had to point all of these out:

OS Berserkers = NS Fishmen

OS Miscrits = NS Petalars

OS Black Tower = NS Tower of Omens

OS “Return to Thundera” = NS “Legacy”

OS Hachiman and “Excalibur” = NS Hattanzo and “The Duelest and the Drifter” episode

OS Safari Joe = NS Conquedor

OS Baron Tass and Mr. Grubber = NS Tookit, Ratar-O and Mordax

OS Leah = NS Gusto, Jenyo and Albo

OS Frogmen = Albo’s race

OS Dr. Dometone = NS Jorma and Soul Sever

true

thats what they shoulve done…i dont know how much of of a difference it wouldve made, but at least it woulve made fans of the old show happy…instead they screwed it up trying to re-invent the wheel…which we know didnt work cause the new generation didnt give a crap bout new thundercats.

A very nice deduction, srebak.

Umm…I don’t think you get the point of the thread. It’s pointing out how the characters in the NS relate to the ones in the OS, not how they could have related to them.

Oh, not this again! Anyway, that’s interesting, Srebak! I just wish that I could have seen the entire original series.

Interesting observation. Although in terms of using old ideas the NS really failed to equal or better most of the comparisons you have made.

I’m not convinced by all of these.

Conquedor/Safari Joe, yes, sort of.

The Duelist & The Drifter - that’s more a Demolisher/Safari Joe type episode than Hachiman (methinks you were distracted by those swords).

Some yes, some no

I dont think YOU get the point of my comment…who cares what the actual “point” of the threat was …mine’s better…thats what they shouldve done…it would have made the show much more interesting for fans of the old show

There is a lot they should have done to make it not only more interesting for OS fans but for the audience it was aimed at.

Your comment is better? Please explain, because I fail to see how an opinion is higher up any totem pole than a valid statement.
Merged Post:

I actually agree with the second part. I think they aimed it too much at the teenagers and younger adults IF they planned on it being a kid-oriented show (which they did, even though they said it would be darker). And they should have referenced a few other OS things throughout the NS, but I think if they did too much it would just seem too forced and more like “we’re trying to get as many in as possible” more than “let’s use this where it works.” I don’t know about others, but that’s what I think.

Hammy yes, they all had different audiences, markets and goals in mind.

That’s completely right. And I think the problem was the fact that they scattered their target audience to a point where it was almost like they were pushing it to no age group. That’s not to say the show was bad, but it’s like advertising a movie with a solid PG-13 rating with kids’ toys and then having it be a remake of a popular children’s movie from 20 years ago. The ways to fix that would have been either to keep the show the way it is and just forget the toys and advertise to the older crowd (13-25 year-olds), or just make the show more kid-oriented and get a better toy company to do it.

To go back to the topic, I think the reason for not exactly porting more characters to the NS is because they wouldn’t be as interesting in the NS (NOT saying they weren’t good in the OS). Especially with humans, I don’t think a lot of the characters just physically alone would fit into the newer universe they designed for the ThunderCats. Changing the physical appearance and keeping the same mental/moral characteristics was a good choice to me, because it allowed them to use good side-characters set up by the OS without some of the cheesiness the OS had.

I guess that I can safely conclude that the NS was intended for the action-minded population. I can also not-so-safely conclude that maybe the “cheesiness” of the OS, once not included in the NS, probably alienated some of the original fans of ThunderCats. By the way, what’s wrong with a little “cheesiness”?

I agree. It’s a pity Thundercats hadn’t turned out like the new TMNT cartoon as it appeals to kids, adults and the toys are selling well. With the new TMNT cartoon they are expanding the existing characters but not radically changing the mythos.
Although I disagree about this topic though. I really think there was a few great characters that would have fitted in well and could really have been expanded on like Hammerhand, Captain Shinner and Hachiman etc.

Nothing at all. I’m just saying that since they wanted a darker direction, they most likely didn’t want a lot of it in the NS.

If I remember correctly Dan Norton said a lot of the initial plans and stuff were from when he was pitching it as a comic. So the story was probably darker for a comic audience. And then when they made it a tv show they probably tried to tone things down.

“ThunderCats 2011” was able to balance light and dark at the same time.

The only ones I can really agree with are Safari Joe/Conquedor and “Return to Thundera”/“Legacy,” and even then those seems like a stretch. I find the supporting characters in the NS to be better than the OS because they’re generally more consistent. The OS mashed up a ton of different elements from various types of science fiction and fantasy, like mad scientists and samurai and aliens. While that can work for some shows, and it seemed to work for the OS, I really don’t think that would have worked with what the NS was going for since they probably wanted things a bit more serious.

I think I’d agree pretty much 100% with that. Apart from anything else, there were so many conscious nods to the original that I don’t believe they were deliberately trying to do new things to make us think of different things in the original.
