Most children movies and tv shows sport mom/dad jokes, knowing we watch with the kids. Two examples that come to mind are Disney movies: Enchanted (the whole part when the Prince knocks on all doors in the building looking for Giselle, my favorite is the SAHM that greets him with “you’re late” while holding a baby and a number of children cling to her dressing gown) and Tangled (the scene devoted to Rapunzel and her mommy issues as soon as she leaves the tower with Flynn… gosh I was right there with her!)
The kids laugh 'cause we laugh, but they just don’t get it.
Hmmm, l suggest you rewatch the episodes when you get to the year 1999. Then watch them again when you get to the year 2005. The good news is that by then you should be able to discern what TPTB are seeking to accomplish with this retelling. The bad news is that when you make it to 2012, we’ll be in the year 2037.
I think the show has serious problems of pacing, direction and animation.
The action in this show is anticlimactic and uninspired. They have serious problems with the pacing and the choreography is just amateurish. It lacks the explosive and energetic nature of the Japanese animation, and I know that some people think anime is crap but when you are talking about action the Japanese animators are the best in the World, and it is pretty disappointing to see how the animation has been handled for this show(it is bland).
Kon!! is the second season of a Japanese anime about stupid little girls just enjoying themselves, and chapter 4 for example has amazing storyboard and layout work, the kind of amazing stuff that you don’t see in Thundercats, and I’m a little frustrated because of that. This show needs talented people like Masahiro Ando or Yutaka Nakamura to draw the storyboards and layouts man, especially for action scenes because they need focus and a good choreography.
Nakamura is an amazing action animator himself. Some of his works.
You say Japanese animation is the best yet you’re criticizing Japanese animation? The animation on this show is done by Studio 4°C.
I agree with the pacing issues, but the animation on Thundercats is miles beyond almost every other American show. And I thought the sword fight between Tygra and Lion-O in episode 13 was particularly exciting.
And I’m sorry while I like the choreography in that clip, the jumpy camera would make me literally sick after a while.
Word Balgus, Studio four is japanese lol. And yes, compared to other shows here in America, Thundercat’s animation is incredibly high quality. Studio 4 clearly puts in effort to separate themselves from the competition. Is the show perfect? No. Is it awesome? Oh yes.
So you get sick of the intro in the old show as well I guess. I know Studio 4 C is Japanese, that’s the reason why it is so disappointing. American shows are bland looking and this show being better looking is not something to go crazy about and it’s not true BTW.
They need talented people doing storyboards and layout not just for the action but for the more story driving moments because the action drags on too long with many borings shots. The action should be fast and to the point.
I saw the sword fight between Lion-on and Tygra, sorry but the action is mediocre at best, maybe in the 90’s that kind of boring and amateurish choreography could be impressive.
The camera in the old intro didn’t jump like that. I don’t mind a moving camera. I just don’t like the jittery crap where it looks like someone’s having a seizure while they’re filming (specifically speaking of the clip from around 24-46 btw).
That crummy music video has instances of animation from shows, movies, and years back where animation is natural to vary greatly based on technique, time, and money. Nakamura is good, but he is curtailed by his budget and team. You can’t say that some of those clips were as good as others, and they certainly didn’t show enough to form an opinion of the quality of each subject. You can’t expect Tcats to be Cowboy Bebop, that’s for sure. But I saw clips in this link that weren’t as high quality as Tcats in terms of animation, but I can’t comment on pacing as I only saw a few seconds of each.
Of course this is highly subjective. I really enjoy most fights I’ve seen in this show. Particularly the fights between Panthro and Grune. And as has been stated, the fight in episode 13 between Lion-O and Tigra was very fluid and dynamic.
