My Issues with the New show

I’ll try to be frank, i remember watching certain episodes of the original show as a kid and my feelings for them were revisited when Cartoon Network and Boomerang reran some of them before the reboot aired. I had such high hopes for the reboot when i saw the promo, but frankly, i’m starting to have mixed feelings about it. Here’s the thing, it feels like the new series is considerably more harder on Lion-O than the original.

In the original series, i never saw an episode where anyone in the group questioned Lion-O’s decisions, nor do i remember an episode where Tygra and Panthro questioned his right to lead. But in this new series, Lion-o’s authority is frequently questioned and challenged, especially by Tygra and Panthro. I wouldn’t have minded if Tygra was Lion-o’s adopted brother, i just wish they didn’t make Tygra Lion-o’s superior at everything (and make him incredibly smug about it) there has to be something that Lion-O can do that Tygra can never do or quality that Lion-O has that Tygra lacks incredibly, but no, they even make Tygra sound smarter and more experienced than Lion-O too.

Also, the original series implied that Lion-O had a strong, almost second father like, bond with Jaga, but in the new series, he rarely, if ever, interacts with the man. Plus the episode where we first see Claudus in the original series implied that Lion-O had a strong bond with his father and his father had much love for his lion cub. But in the new series, since Claudus favored Tygra, we’re left to assume that Lion-O had little to no bond with Claudus. Especially considering the scene where Claudus spoke like he was ready to renounce Lion-O’s right to the crown and give it to Tygra. The only reason i can personally fathom for Lion-O mourning his father’s death was because, he was his father.

In the original series, no one ever really called Lion-o out on his mistakes (no one in the group anyway) and his mistakes were bound to be big because back then, he was really a child who only thought he was an adult because he looked like one. But in the new series, Lion-O is portrayed as a teenager (which means his mistakes are actually just part what everyone goes through at that age) yet he is frequently called out on his choices and mistakes, how is that fair?

In the original series, i wouldn’t have minded if Tygra and Cheetara were a couple, if they had left Lion-O out of the equation. True, i remember an episode where i thought a Lion-O and Cheetara relationship was where they were headed, but after much recent thought, i realized Lion-O probably wouldn’t have fallen for Cheetara since she was old enough to be his mother. Even in the new series, a :cheetara: + :tygra: romance isn’t something i would’ve minded, if they didn’t make it seem like she had a thing for Lion-O. I mean, couldn’t this have been one of those things where Lion-O could see that his brother was in love Cheetara and occasionally mocked him about it? Or at the most be one of those things to which Lion-O paid no mind. But, once again, no, they had to make this a love triangle. And now, it looks like they’re not even going let :pumyrahappy: or anyone else be the one to heal that broken heart of his.

Though the my problems is something that just surprised, in the original series, Slythe and the other mutants were more comical than they were threatening, but here, that comedy was completely down-played in favor of making them more threatening

This all just my opinion, of course, but i just wish the show had more episodes like “Journey to the Tower of Omens”, “Legacy” and “Berbils” where Lion-O wasn’t being picked on and just showed off why he was Lord of Thundercats because he was in a fight

My point is that with the way the show is going, there are certain episodes that i am hesitant to watch, especially after reading what they’re going to be about (e.g. the last three episodes of Season one, i never watched any of them all the way through, though my curiosity almost to me)

LOL. Weirdly enough, I consider most of your problems with the show to be pluses.

I think that the new series takes a much more realistic approach. Lion-O’s authority should indeed be questioned since he lacks experience. In the old series, it would have made a lot more sense for them to follow Tygra until Lion-O had proven himself a capable leader, since Lion-O still had the mind of a child. And I don’t think they’re picking on him as much as you say. Panthro became much friendlier after “Old Friends,” and it’s part of Tygra’s character to act that way toward Lion-O.

I believe in this series, Lion-O did have a sort of bond with Jaga, since he was the only person who would listen to him and not criticize his beliefs. It’s just that with the more realistic approach, Lion-O isn’t going to see him every episode, only in certain circumstances. As for Claudus, he only knew Lion-O as a child in the original. The new version has much more character, and you can see he had a hand in shaping his sons’ lives, and at the end of his life you can tell that he and Lion-O were able to come to terms.

As for the love triangle, well, it’s your opinion. I’m enjoying the romance subplot, and I think it’s a good life experience for Lion-O. I do hope that Pumyra will get to be his special somebody once he has a better understanding of how love works. I also hope that being a love interest isn’t Pumyra’s sole purpose though.

The Mutants being funny was fine in the old days, but these days I expect some more competency from villains in this kind of show. There are plenty of episodes left to see, and anything could happen.

EXACTLY on ALL counts. These are all GOOD things. It means the writers are taking the story seriously and respect the intelligence of the viewer. (for the most part, at least..)

So your issues with the new show are

  1. that it’s not exactly like the original
  2. that the relationships are more realistic because everyone doesn’t automatically agree with each other.
  3. that when Lion-O does something stupid they don’t immediately let him off the hook.
  4. that the villains aren’t comical and are threatening.
  5. Jaga (a dead man) doesn’t talk to Lion-O all the time.

Yeah, I’m sorry but I have to agree with the others comments above. These are some of the things I like about the new series.

I read til something about you dont like Lion-o dont speak with a dead Jaga and blablablabla.

What kind of reasons are these? All this makes the show more realistic as people here QUESTION each other. That is a GOOD THING, conflicts are also good and enjoyable.

Also, stop saying Lion-Os dad favored Tygra, he LOVED and CHERISHED his son to his death.

I think you misunderstood me, especially the fact that i already pointed out that all of this was just my opinion

  1. I’m saying that the series might be drifting too far from the original source material too fast and not always in a good way

2 and 3. Like i said, i wouldn’t have minded a Tygra/Cheetara relationship if Lion-O was left out of the equation. And all i’m saying is that the amount of pressure put on Lion-O is less than it was in the original series and considering that the Lion-O of that time was more likely to do a lot of stupid things, he was given too much of break by the others. While this Lion-O is hardly ever given a break by anyone.

  1. Like i said, i don’t have a problem with the Mutants being serious, it’s just that it’s a bit of a drastic change from the comical and bumbling trio from the original show.

  2. I just don’t believe the Lion-O/Jaga relationship as much as i did for the OS. Jaga seems closest to Cheetara than anyone else

Also, Rizefall, it certainly didn’t look that way to me

Good and interesting topic- and I do agree with Balgus82 and the others- all of these new ideas and twists and love triangles, are things that I love about the new series!

AS much as I would like to see them make as many seasons and episodes with this new version of TC, I dont know if they can or will…so they may be trying to squeeze in as much OS stuff…and shorten this series as best they can. Make sense? Just my thoughts.

TA

I don’t see Lion-O as being under less pressure than the OS at all. In the OS, after they got to Third Earth, they immediately built a lair and pretty much just explored on their own until an outside force attacked them. At the end of the day they just went back to the lair and slept in their comfy beds.

In the NS Lion-O has to master the sword (which he could do naturally in the OS), Unite the animals, collect all the stones, and ultimately defeat Mumm-Ra. And they spend each and every day either in the tank (which I imagine is a bit cramped) or sleeping on the ground outside.

In the OS they really would’ve just left Mumm-Ra alone if he had stayed in his pyramid and left them alone or if he didn’t keep coming up with plans to kill them/steal the sword. They spent all their free time exploring for fun.

In the NS even if Mumm-Ra left them completely alone from now on their ultimate goal is still to get powerful enough to eventually go back to him and defeat him for good.

They’re much more active than reactionary in the New show.

And frankly Lion-O didn’t really have to do much “leading” in the OS. In the NS their lives are pretty much in his hands. If he leads them wrong, they’re dead.

I think the answer to your complaints is simple - they weren’t trying to make an exact replica of the original series, they were trying to reinvent the show by changing the ages of the characters and in so doing, changing their maturity levels, as well as change the way the characters relate by putting their lives in very different circumstances than the original series.

I have several disappointments too, but not because they’re trying to be different but because I think some of the things they’re trying to do with the series aren’t really working for it. That and I don’t like the pace, it feels to fast and the episodes feel too rushed.

I just watched the animated movie The Secret Life of Arietty (or something like that) over the weekend and I really appreciated the slower pace of the movie. It just feels like everything these days moves too fast. I don’t mind good action sequences but give me the heartfelt stories to go along with it that endears the characters to me.

Now I have felt some episodes have been rushed. Especially towards the beginning of the series. But I do believe they started leveling out and the pacing got better after about episode 6 or 7.

My one disappointment in the show is that Lion-O gets the lion’s share (pun intended lol) of the development. I’d really like to see the other members of the team get more time in the spotlight. The only one who really has had their own episode so far is Panthro.

That’s my major disappointment as well. And now they said Pumyera will be introduced and get some episodes dedicated to her. Why not dedicating episodes to the already existent characters first?

Who has said they wont do that before Pumyera joins the gang?

I think everyone will at some point. Almost everyone. Because everyone seems to have a past or history that they like to talk about. It makes good stories/ which means MORE episodes!!!

Panthro got his spotlight.

Cheetara and Tygra theirs…

Lion-O…alittle…and I am sure we may see more??..

The twins?..we saw some from the first two eps… but they are so young…we are already watching them grow up,…lol

So when new charachters come in…I am sure there MIGHT be some history to talk about or some flash backs…who knows?

i honestly agree with most of your points regardless if it is your opinion. the way the writers tend to constantly punish liono for his mistakes is kind of getting unfair. i understand they're trying to add layers to his character and all, but the way he is handled almost makes me dislike him as a main character. we all know he is a teen lacking in experience in leading and his fellow thundercats aren't really trying to help much. panthro was a war hero with countless battle experiences, tygra also has some experience in strategy and tactics, cheetara is highlyl experienced in combat. the point im trying to make is that with all their experience, they can make him a better leader overall. instead they constantly challenge his authority and tell him he doesn't deserve this title he has. lets not forget that he never wanted any of this, this burden was dumped on him and he was expected to live up to some high expectation.

the whole love triangle to me was unnecessary because i think it drove a wedge in the already damaged relationship the brothers had. i thought cheetara was supposed to be the wise voice in the group but she actually made the problem worse. i don’t mind her being with tygra, but to use it as another life lesson to teach liono another lesson was a dumb idea IMHO. im sure many in this thread won’t agree with me but we are all entitled to our own opinion. the love triangle kind of damaged her character in terms of her role in the group. she is the kings adviser/ bodyguard and judging from the outcome from the triangle, i don’t think liono wants to have anything to do with her anymore.

slythe and the other mutants in this new series i think, are much better than their OS counterparts. the tone of this new series is much darker and less comical so i the change of personalities for them is right in my eyes.
i do hope the other characters get more development so we can better understand them. i will agree with most in this thread that liono’s screentime should be reduced to help develop the other characters.

I agree that Lion-O should be able to learn from his teammates, but the thing is, with the exception of Cheetara, every time one of them gives him advice Lion-O ignores them and does what he wants anyway. How would they expect him to be willing to learn from them if he doesn’t listen when they try?

you’re right but they have to understand that they are dealing with a teenager who has literally the weight of the world on his shoulders. this is a kid we are talking about here who lost everything and is placed with a heavy burden so i kind of expect him to act a certain way. i would have thought tygra of all people would sympathize more with his brother and treat liono better. they both lost their father, being the older one he should treating his bro a little better. we all agree that liono doesn’t deserve most of the things he has now but it’s fate that he has those things now so that can’t be changed. the sword of omens chose him, it wasn’t the other way around.

Yeah, but the thing is Cheetara and Tygra are teenagers too (well they said Tygra was 19-20 and weren’t specific). Why should they be expected to be so much more mature than someone who’s only a year or two younger?

Why should Tygra be more sympathetic to Lion-o? He lost his fatehr as well… for all I know, he has lost a family twice by now, and who’s bing sympathetic to him? Not Lion-o, that’s for sure. He even goes all whiny when one person, the one Tygra seems to have loved all his life, “chooses” him. Lin-o had Claudus and Jaga’s blessing.

I remember a year ago when we first learned for the New Show,a lot of discussion was centered on how ‘New’ the show should be,refraining from being a mere remake. I am very happy that the 2011 Thundercats are bringing forth brand new elements while staying faithful to the Thundercats saga.

On the 1985 show, during the first 20-30 episodes, until the Annointment trials Lion-O was very stubborn at some times and was acting rather self-willed.It took him some time and Jaga hammering home to the young cube of his responsibilities as well as the proper way to behave like a leader and a good teammate. There were moments, maybe not so blatant as it occurs now, where the rest of the Thundercats questioned Lion-O’s decisions or expected him to be more mature. Also keep in mind that In 1985 morality and ethic played a major role and the society expected from the cartoons to include them in a specific way too in order to impart principles to the young children who look up to their heroes, hence the Robert Kuisis morals.Well at present, things are a little bit different with the young generation and they don’t need ‘guidance’. This is one more reason we see an arrogant and kind of rebel Lion-O.To be honest i prefer this style.

Still, by reading all your points i don’t see anything bad with this approach…
