The ThunderCats are coming to Cartoon Network! After Thundera is attacked by the lizard people, Lion-O leads the ThunderCats on a quest for the Book of Omens, the one artifact that could guide them to victory. But he’ll have to face villains like the ancient evil sorceror Mumm-Ra and the dangerous lizard general Slithe. Luckily, he has the Sword of Omens and its amazing powers at his disposal. The lizard people? Does this mean they aren’t called the Mutants? And does this mean we won’t be seeing Monkian, Vultureman, and Jackalman?
I always thought of Slithe as more of a frog than a lizard. A bit fat for a lizard. Anyhoo…
Monkian, Jakalman, and all the other mutants have been verified to be in the show, but they’re all separate tribes. All the mutants aren’t grouped together this time around.
And Slythe has always been a lizard. He has a tail. Frogs don’t.
Tho I do hope they come up with a better name for them than “lizard people.”
Maybe they’ll do something crazy and call them “Reptillians”. We can hope anyway.
As for being attacked by just Reptillians, I don’t think so. If you pay close attention to the catapult shots, I am pretty sure there’s at least 1 Jackalmen shown.
Well, Slithe is a mutant. The tail could be a mutation. So he’s a frog with a tail, hence a mutation, hence called a mutant, hence there is logic…
Calling them “Lizard People” would fit in with the OS naming characters based on their species… Lion-O (a lion), Tygra (a tiger), Panthro (a panther), Cheetara (a cheetah), Lynx-O (a lynx), Pumyra (a puma), Jackalman (a jackal), Monkian (a monkey), Vultureman (a vulture), Mumm-Ra (a mummy)…
Real original bunch of people those creators who came up with names for the characters. (we need an emotie who is sarcastically rolling its eyes) Maybe they could call them Lizzies instead.

I would disagree because I think Cheetara, Bengali and Lynx-O all looked very cat-like as well. Lion-O looked the least like a cat, more like a man with red hair. And Panthro was just a bald blue guy with pointy ears. Funny how those ThunderCats you could see the ears of, their ears were pointy but looked more like a vulcan than a cat. I guess their ears were more of a cross between human and cat ears, that’s probably what they were going for. The ears I’ve seen in images from the new cartoon look more like cats to me.
Maybe if they had made those names their surnames. So Lion-O, Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro, would be last names. Although I’m not really sure what would be good first names because these don’t really sound that great: John Lion-O, Kyle Tygra, Jennifer Cheetara, Alex Panthro, etc… Maybe Kiefer, like Kiefer Sutherland. Because the fer in Kiefer kinda sounds like fur… :eek:
Ever since I saw someone post about the “stones of power,” I assumed these “stones” refer to the red circles on their uniforms which replace the ThunderCat insignias from the original cartoon, which glow when the Eye of Thundera is opened. They look like flat, red stones in both the trailer and images I’ve seen. The Eye of Thundera gives ThunderCats their power but this power is transfered to them through those red circles they wear. In the original series, it glowed along with their eyes when the Eye was summoned, giving them the extra power. Likewise, when Excalibur stabbed out the Eye of Thundera, their isignias all went empty and they lost all their strength and power.
So I’m assuming the stones of power are the red circles they wear that when the Eye is summoned, they glow because they are giving the ThunderCats that extra power.
My point is they were named after the others had already been created. therefore their names had to fit. they couldnt just come in with names like Jane or Bradley.
Eh? I was just mentioning Bengali and Lynx-O along with Cheetara because I think they look more like cats. Technically, Bengali isn’t an obvious cat title. Kids aren’t going to pick up that there are bengal tigers by the name Bengali, I didn’t at least. Bengali is by far my favorite name in the series because it didn’t sound like a cat type name like all the rest did. To me it seems the most creative.
It I had a vote, I would have left Lion-O’s name alone. It sounds ok to me. I would have renamed Tygra, kids are going to know he’s a tiger by his obvious color and stripes. If nothing else, they could have called him Ty. I also would have renamed Cheetara because of her obvious cheetah markings. They could have named her Tara (vowel pronuniciation being the same as the ending of Cheetara). I’d leave Panthro because he’s not obviously a panther. With the Thunderkittens, I would either drop the “wily” part and just name them Kit and Kat, or I’d call her Wiley and him something like Cubby.
I try to cool-ify the name reptillian. Maybe call them, The Reptos. Or something totally un-species related. They don’t call them Cat People, they call them Thunderians. Maybe a reptillian nation will be announced in the actual cartoon. Plundar was the name of the Mutants home world. Maybe they’ll be called Plundarians in this? Or maybe they’ll be called that when they unite with the monkeys, jackals, vultures, and rats to create a nation.
I do like the title of Plundaarians as far as Slythe’s race of reptilians go, seeing since Monkian, Jackalman and Vultureman were all from Plundaar.
Also, I like the idea of calling Cheetara, just Tara. As for dropping “Wily” from WilyKit and WilyKat… I’d keep Wily in front of Kat’s, but not Kit. I am wondering about Jaga, tough. His name didn’t imply he was a Jaguar and it sounded loads better and more original than Jaguar-O. Maybe Jaguarius?? And what about Lion-O’s mother?? In this new series, Tygra is Lion-O’s brother. So, does this imply that Lion-O and Tygra’s mother is of the tiger persuasion, or is she a lion?? Does this make Tygra an adopted brother, half-brother or a blood brother?? So many questions.
I’ve been thinking in this names thing, and I agree that they could have kept a name that suggests thier cat-base, but stll not being that obvious. Here’s what I came up with (with ToC’s help ;))
Jaga = Jaga (I think that one could remain the same)
Lion-O = Leo
Tygra = Ty
Cheetara = Tara
Wilykat = Wily (like in Willy)
Wilykit = Kit or Kitty
Panthro = I don’t know…
Well I think its suppose to be a degrading term for the Reptile clan to be called ‘Lizard people’ just as we all know we have degrading names for certain types of people. So maybe its an insult?
