Unless your talking those rare instances where a “panther” can either be a reference to a black jaguar or mountain lion in North Ameican.
Most times Panther= Black colored Leopard the strongest of the great cats.
A panther is a leopard btw. (at least in Asia and Africa. American Panthers are Jaguars.)

Pantro doesn’t have spots, so I’d say jaguar.

Panthers are specifically leopards and jaguars that have black fur.
It is a color variation. Like say one person has red hair, and another person has blond. the person with red hair might be called a ginger because they have red hair, but he’s still a person.

Well I suppose the new Panthro does have a bald “spot.”
Panthro’s not black tho. He’s blue. But then again, lions don’t have red manes.
I think they were going for the deep blue/black combination. I have a friend who’s hair looks like it has a blue hue to it in certain kinds of light. Usually really shiny and silky.
They can’t do all black in a cartoon either.
So that’s why you see blue or dark grey rep black in cartoons so much.
I think we can safely assume that male pattern baldness does NOT run in Lion-O’s family. 
Leopards and jaguars are 2 different species.
Panthers are leopards. Usually, the spotted ones are called leopard, while the single-colored ones (usually black) are called panthers.
“Panther” is pretty much the black color mutation. It can happen in any cat, in some species (like tigers and lions)chances are very close to impossible, but it’s common in Jaguars and Leopards.
Look at is closely. It’s spots are noticeable.
You probably shouldn’t try and over analyse the types of cat that the characters are based on.
‘Panther’ is just a play on the genus Panthera (which contains tigers, lions, jaguars and leopards) and typically refers to melanistic (very dark furred due to an excess of black hairs) leopards and jaguars.
Leopards and jaguars are also both significantly smaller than lions and tigers yet Panthro seems comparable to Claudus in size.
Again, has this been confirmed somehow?
I hope, too, that they just mean mentally age. I just can’t see them aging him physically. Maybe, though, that’s cause I think they did the aging in the original series so he could lift the Sword of Omens since he couldn’t do it when he was just a boy. The 2011 Lion-O is already old enough physically, but he definitely needs to mature mentally.
I actually want him to grow. Maybe even looking like Claudus at the end of the whole series.
