Jaga Variations

I was just wondering if anyone knows who made the two different Jaga variations (flesh tone and Yellow/orange tone). Were USA figures typically one colour and UK figures another? Or did both manufacturers produce both variants?

The reason I am asking is that the majority of Jaga figures over here in South Africa are flesh tone Jagas, and knowing who produced them my provide some clues as to which figures were sold in SA (LJN or Rainbow).

I know for a fact that the flesh tones Jagas were produced only by the company Playful perhaps it was different in SA but as it stands right now i’ve never seen them in anythng other than on Playful cards.I only know this because I have only seen flesh tone Jagas on Playful cards wether as the yellow/orange tone Jagas I have only seen the on LJN/Rainbow cards. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. That is very interesting. Weren’t most of the Playfull figures different from the LJN/Rainbow figures? If I am correct their Bengali looked more like a Tyga painted white and blue, and their Lynxo figres also looked strange. Are those the Playfull figures or am I getting them confused with bootlegs from Argentina?

I think that while the LJN/Rainbow Lynxo had his own sculpt, the Playful version was a Jaga repaint. I’m not sure about the Bengali though.

Yeah those are the Playful figs. not all of them were different but a few of them were. YOu are correct in that Lynx-o is a repaint of Jaga. Bengali I don’t think is a repaint of Tygra (I have heard this but although the head looks as if it can be the torso is different). But there are also other differences like Jackalman is painted differently (blue shoulder harness etc) There are also different weapons Tygras bola whip is different, Cheetaras staff is red not orange, Lynx-o’s shield is different but the most noticable is Bengali’s hammer it is silver with an axe blade on one side and a small hammer on the other (sorry about the pic being so dark)

The Playful line is quite interesting, hope this helps

This is really interesting because all of the figures that I have in my collection (as well as those in my friends collections) are NOT the playful variants. All of the Tygras, Lynxo’s, Bengali’s, Jackalmen, and cheetara figures are the “Real” ones. They all have the correct sculpts and weapons, however ALL of the Jaga figures that have been found locally are flesh coloured… It really seems quite confusing to me.

I presume we must have got our figures from either LJN or Rainbow (as our figures are definitely not the Playful ones), but the Jaga figures are a mystery…

Does anyone know of any distinguishing features between the USA/UK figures that could help in figuring out where ours came from?

LJN and Rainbow toys were the same production. I think some were flesh tone while others were the more yellow tone, which seems to be more common. I don’t think you can match the tone up with either LJN or Rainbow because it’s likely both tones were released under both headers.

I also would like to point out that the axe on the Argentinian version is from the original Bengali concept. Bengali was supposed to have an axe rather than a hammer . Coincidence that the Argentinian Bengali has an axe? Perhaps not. Here’s what I mean:

Hey Neil
Are you saying that the flesh tone Jaga was also available in the UK and USA? If so that would make a lot more sense.

Possibly. The variation is obviously down to 2 different production runs. We saw this just recently with the new He-man toy line (both with Teela and Snake Armor He-man)

As to where the flesh tone variation is more common, it depends on when that run went into production (before or after the yellow tone) If it were before, I’d say it should be more common in America and if it were after it would probably be more common in the UK (or released only in the UK)

I have a sneaky feeling the answer may lie with the Toy Options carded Jaga as that could certainly be a flesh tone Jaga. Sadly I have only ever seen it once on Ebay UK. So if it was indeed a late production run it should be on the UK Toy Options card as those were released at the end of the line if I remember right. I did want that Jaga, but I wanted the Toy Options carded Tygra that the same seller was selling much more and couldn’t afford both at the same time :frowning:

Neil i tracked down the sale of that auction and the buyer has website were he displays his figures. turns out that the Toy Options Jaga is not flesh colored. Truthfully I think those Jagas are an Argentina variant. I have in fact seen several Jagas on argentinian cards and all have turned out to be flesh colored.I too thought for a while that it was a European variation but I think its turning out to be more of the argentinian variation.

mmm… well in that case your probably right about them being on Playful cards only. If I ever do come across an LJN/Rainbow/Grand Jouets headed carded with a flesh toned Jaga I’ll be sure to post it!

I might try and pick up the Jaga, Lynx-o and Bengali Playful figures next for my collection

Well that makes it even more interesting… I doubt the distributor over here (Arlenco Toys and Games) would have imported figures from both Playful and LJN, so how we ended up with such a varied range of toys over here is quite a mystery…

I will keep investigating and if I find out more I will let you know.

If the flesh tone Jaga indeed is the Playful release then it would be wrong to always refer to it as a variant to the yellow LJN version. There are not many Playful figure released that is the same as the LJN original whether it’s paintjob or sculpt. We know about Ben Gali: different sculpt and new weapon, Lynx-O: dif sculpt and new shield, Jackalman with blue shoulder strap and a very odd paintjob, Mumm-Ra with battle-mattic action but no light-up eyes (unlike the Luna-lasher mumm-re that had neither), Top-Spinner with yellow, black and red ball & chain weapon and the list goes on.
The only time I’ve ever seen a MOC flesh tone Jaga it is on a Playful card. Look at the image and tell me if the hilt on the sword of omens look entirely red? Maybe it’s a bad image. Or maybe the Playful Jaga is different all together than the one we’re talking about?

And a loose one, is it the same?
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9725/jagapinkbodyvariant6fu.jpg

For a long time it was rumored that the flesh tone Jaga was a European release only or perhaps a LJN variation but from watching Ebay in the past 2 years I would have to say now that the flesh tone Jaga was only released by Playful. I have never seen a Jaga that was produced by LJN to be flesh toned, all the ones i have seen have been yellow toned on LJN cards.

the Playful Jaga and Lion-o have all red swords. like you see in the carded pic above. The sword with the loose Jaga is not the Playful version of the Sword of Omens
I will post my Playful Moc Jaga (I have one in the mail now and when I get it I’ll put it up) with my LJN moc Jaga and everybody can see the difference. The flesh tone only came from Playful. In fact I might just do a side by side comparison of all my Playful figs with there LJN/Rainbow counterparts (the ones I have carded). Some I will just have to settle for loose LJN figs. We will see

Well as I stated earlier I would post the two Jagas side by side so everybody could now see the difference (even though this might be beating a dead horse as everything was covered in the thread already). One thing i dont know if was covered already is the capes are different the playful one is a very dark blue (royal) and looks like felt almost (has that sort of texture), while the LJN cape is a light blue and some kind of synthetic material (like polyester)
My Playful’s Jaga has black tears under both his eyes anybody have any thoughts as to why (is it dirt, but under both eyes cause the loose one earlier in the thread doesnt have it or mold but there isn’t any on the rest of him. (well I tried resizing the playful pic down a few times and for some reason it resized it in photobucket but not here sorry ) Well hope this helps and clears up any remaining questions.

Does anyone know if the Playful figures had the same wording stamped into the bottom of the figures feet as the LJN versions? Or did they have different wording stamped into the bottom of the feet? The reason I ask is that a friend of mine has a Flesh coloured jaga and it has the same wording in the feet as my yellow variant.

If all the playful figures had different wording then it might suggest that LJN did make flesh coloured variants.

Playful has the word playful stamped on the bottom along with the date and telepix inc and twolf. So it’s the same wording just has playful on it.
Your friends maybe a bootleg (i’m not sure), I’m basing this on the fact that there are bootlegs out there that were made in Mexico that are stamped playful on the bottom, ie the monkian that is all yellow and black/brown. I was also offered a mummra that was red and light green and I had to ask to make sure. I never new that these were bootleged like that untill a few weeks ago, so LJN might have had companies rip them off in Africa (like I said I dont know its all just speculation). If you could post pics of the fig and the bottom of its feet it might help figure this out.

I will get my buddy to take some pics and mail them through to me. Im pretty sure it isnt a bootleg. The paint and sculpt is very good quality, nothing like the mexico and argentina bootlegs. I will give him a shout and see if he can mail me some pics.
