Here’s one that I come across more from comments from news articles: Is it a reboot/re-imaging/sequel or continuation of the old series?
I think it’s a continuation per Claudus’ comments as he was demonstrating the Sword of Omens’ power with Lion-O, as the original Thundercats defeated the first Mumm-RA and established the Thundara kingdom and race.
if it was a continuation they wouldn’t be on Third Earth as they left the planet to go back to Thundera.
The groups on the show are not the only Thundercats. each generation has their own group.
It’s a total reboot/reimagining. It’s way too coincidental to have every single character reincarnated at the same time. Also, I think Snarf would be incredibly miffed to be downgraded from Nanny Supreme to housepet.
Also if it were a continuation I’m sure Mumm-Ra would’ve mentioned it somehow. “I never defeated you in your former life Lion-O, but I have you now!”
I thought I read in interviews that the new series is a re-invention. I know they talked about how many of the 80’s cartoons were being revamped into live action movies and they didn’t think that was the way to go so they kept this as a cartoon. I’m under the strong impression that they’re reinventing the original cartoon, not using the original as a back story for the new cartoon. I think that would be a bad idea personally.
I disagree, if done right it could be good to have them be descended from the original series. Hundreds, or maybe thousands, of years have passed, Thundera has been destroyed again and they’ve returned to what has become their second home, and in the five hundred years they’ve been there they’ve moved from colonists to dominant force. As for the coincidence of all the same names cropping up, maybe that’s not coincidence but rather the fates aligning once more for the epic battle of Heroes against villains. What we’ve heard of the legends so far could lend to that. Personally if I were in charge I’d personally know I was doing that but never state it outloud so fan theory could reign. I don’t actually think they’re going for that, in fact I believe they’re not, but I think it would be cool if they did.
Yeah, but to do that would mean that all of them were re-incarnated and all of them have the exact same names - heroes as well as villains, and they’re all playing roughly the same kind of role. I would find the repition of that to be annoying, personally. Not to mention, I think there’d be too many loopholes.
I for one don’t want this to be that kind of a continuation. I’d rather them leave the original alone as its own entity and this new series as a completely separate entity. It gives them a lot more freedom that way.
But I guess we’ll see with time.
You don’t need to have them as direct re-incarnation just convergent fates, drawn into the battle but not the same people at all. The universe moves on, the situation changes, the battle remains.
I’m not saying they should do this, as I say I’d activly not say I was doing that if I was in charge and leave it to fandom interpritation, but I think it’d be cool if that remained possible.
Clearly they already have had Thundercats fight Mumm-Ra once, why not leave it possible that that was the original series. I think the possibility makes the two universes more interesting.
I don’t like that idea. It just over complicates things. and sorta sounds a little like a wheel of time rip off.
Never read Wheel of Time, so if it is ripped off from that, sorry didn’t know.
It doesn’t need to over complicated if it just remains Mumm-Ra fought Thundercats before, which has already been stated in show, and it ends up revealing once they came from another, now destroyed planet. Leaving fans, and fanfiction writers, to draw there own ideas.

I really don’t think they are going to go this route. Everything said so far (interviews, panels, etc.) has stated this is a total reboot. And they even talked about going back a few thousand years and giving the backstory about how all this came to be.
Also, mumm-ra’s bit about the eye of thundera being his, and it being “part of a bigger picture” as one of the ‘stones of power’ kind of flies in the face of the Old shows stance on the Eye- where the eye of Thundera was inherintly good, and could not be used by evil… wheras evil cannot use it in the new show merely because of an ‘ancient spell’.
I think the Thunderians- like all the other Anthros on third Earth- are native to the planet. Besides, the King who defeated mumm-ra in the mural sure didn’t look like old series Lion-o.
I would mind a parallel universe arc where they actually meet the good old ThunderCats.
Pretty much like what happened in the Turtles Forever special.
We didn’t get an origin of the sword in the original, or of Mumm-Ra for that matter. Tie them together. He had always known about the sword. The ancient spell may be why it was called inherintly good.
As for the mural, well first off whose to say when the show ended that was the end of the battle, that may have been Lion-O a few years on, or maybe the mural showed the ideals of the time, rather than an acurate representation of the actual idiosyncratic features of the face.
Oh please no, TF mocked the original so much, more than was accurate.
It’s been outright stated by the creators to be a re-imagining. An alternate continuity. So why does this need it’s own thread again?

Think of it the way I do: the original series was the story of legend that has been told to the new crew as kids… and they had put themselves in the roles of their heroes. So basically, it’s the legend that came before, but names may have been changed. Works for me.
Or again, like Battlestar Galactica. Remember the line: “This has all happened before. It will happen again.” 
It think it’s actually kind of clever that the producers, while clearly stating it’s a reboot, have planted little things here and there so fans who want to can also interpret it as a continuation, albeit generations later. Well played.
How can you debate what’s fact? It’s like conspiracy theories.
I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. I’m just trying to see this in the same light as you. But I just can’t.
It’s clearly a re-imagining of the original show. They’ve changed too many things for it to be a continuation of the first series.
