Is it a reboot/re-imaging/sequel or continuation of the old series?

Of course, I meant in a more appropriate manner. I mean, I’d actually love to see the old Panthro kick everybody’s butt! :stuck_out_tongue:

The simple, sad fact of the matter is that the show is Thundercats in name only. For a new series, I would have preferred to see a continuation of the old, but several generations down. That would have proved more interesting to me. You could actually take the time to world build; you could have elements that go back into the past as well. Given the original Thundercats, what would their descendants have thought of them?

All we have now is Rock’em Sock’em felines, with guns no less. Thundercats they ain’t.

The way the premire showed this new continuity, people are free to believe this is a continuation if they want, but don’t be suprised if a Mumm-ra/thundercats backstory comes along in the first season that totally destroys any chance of a connection.

People are making waaaay too much out of that one line. “It was the Thundercats, our ancestors, who first defeated Mum-ra!” And since when was third earth in the old show “A world of warring animals?” It was peaceful unitl the mutants and Thundercats got there. I didn’t see Berbil making total war on The snow men of hook mountian (heck, they wouldn’t even fight back against the brute men!) Or the Tuskas making war on the Wollos. Clawdus’s speech does not match the old show.

And as to this remake not being thundercats… I loved the old show as a kid, but I can’t even watch it now. The new show definitely has more plot and drama in the first two eps, than any of the ‘new thundera’ eps of the old one had combined!

I think it is purposely being kept vague enough that each person can be happy with their thoughts/beliefs on the new series. If you want to believe it is a continuation, there are enough dots that can connect the two. But if you don’t want it to be, there are enough that don’t connect. And then there is personal interpretation too. For example:

Well there’s the Berzerkers, Living Ooze, Crab Men, Trollogs, Giantors, Rock Giants, Spidera, Driller, Mongor, Queen Tartara, Tashi, Ice King, Inflamer, Mad Bubbler, and the machine that was attacking Turmagar’s territory.

But on the flip side, ThunDera believes technology is a myth, Snarf can’t speak, some ThunDerians now have tails, and Mumm-Ra claims the Eye of ThunDera belongs to him. Plus, there is a plot hole in why they are on Third Earth again, considering the original series had them rebuilding their new home planet, New ThunDera.

I still say it is being kept vague enough to be interpreted however the “ThunderParents” want to interpret it. But also vague enough that “ThunderKids” don’t need to see the original for the new series to make sense.

I do agree that it’s currently open to interperetation, but I still thnk in the middle of the season a Mumm-ra/thundercats backstory flashback episode will come along in the first season that totally destroys any chance of a connection. I doubt the producers have any concern about making it line up with the old show. Just my opinion though.

That is quite possible. Maybe they are doing it on purpose for those who want a continuation to really like the new series enough, before they reveal hard evidence that it isn’t a continuation, that they will keep watching since they’ve already gotten that far into the series.

My first post failed to show up so I’ll try again.

I like to think of the original series as being the stories and legends of old being told to the new series’ cast when they were kids and their imagination applying their names, ideals and looks to the characters.

Yeah, this is a reboot. The new show has more history written into it than the original series did, but the history is not the original series.

There will be no backstory to the 80ies series. Word by god says that it’s a official reboot in the 2010ies. Imo, the creators just added a new and fresh backstory because the fleeing into the space-plot was too cliché.

sigh I didn’t say this show would give the 80’s show a backstory, I said this show will have a backstory that eliminates the possibility of it being connected to the old show.

I can’t really see how anyone would think that this is a continuation/prequel/origin story to the original series in any way. The producers (who I think would know one way or the other) have said that it is not and there is no way it could be. Thundercats: the next generation, would have been really lame. It would have been a terrible idea to do that imho at any rate. Remember super man returns? They decided to do a continuation of a movie from like 15 or so years earlier…stupid idea, stupid movie.

And remember how they relaunched Doctor Who, no wait that one worked rather well. You don’t have to dump the old series to do something new. Just leave the backstory to hints and vague recollections and leave fans to fill in the blanks one way or another.

Not saying the producers have done this, just they could have and they could keep it so if fans want that then maybe it could be that.

Sorry about that. One of our SPAM fighting controls also flags some real posts as SPAM. You should be good to go now.

But the thing is that they didn’t. It’s flat out STATED to be a reboot. A re-imagining. Taking the old characters and concepts an doing something with them. Why are people still questioning this?

Yes it’s fun to think of the possibilities, personally I find the reincarnation theorie a ton of fun. So we’re just going to revolve a discussion on simple fan “what if’s”?
Merged Post:

How is it fact? You mean opinion. An opinion not highly shared. And I see this as ThunderCats. I still cannot comprehend how this cannot be ThunderCats, it has the same characters and basic conflict. Just that DETAILS and DEPTH have been added to them.

And why continue on the same universe? The original lagged on the same, rather, small world that it made everything seem like the characters didn’t really need to expand their horizons anymore by the time the show ended. What reason would their decendants have? Decendants that would most likely grow up in a well established community that wouldn’t need for them to go out and explore like the originals did.

Rebooting they take out all obstacles, they don’t limit themselves and don’t carry the heavy burden on their shoulders of ruining the established personalities of the first characters. Just look at Voltron Force. Rebooting they have the chance to expand the mythologies even more. Just look how much the Transformers franchise has benefited from this.

What details? We don’t even know where in the universe this story takes place, or what a Thundercat actually is. What depth? They lobtomized Tygra by making him a gun toting ass, and sharp Wilykit into a doe-eyed baby sister.

MGP

That’s just like asking where in the universe do the Pokemon Games take place. Where in the universe does One Piece take place. Where in the universe does Lord Of the Rings takes place.

They all take place in their respective own universes.

Lion-O actually wanting to mature and act like a king. Trying to find what he believes is the most neutral solution to benefit all animal kind.

Tygra is actually interesting based on his actions than just his hobby. He seems to be an ass, but we know there is more to him because he obviously cares about Lion-O.

Cheetara already has more history than in the 80’s version.

Want more details? We learn about their society. How things work. How it was established. We learn of the character’s backgrounds and relations before losing their home. When did we really learn any of this in the original show? Never really.

We have a starting point of snippets only in the first two episodes from which everything will grow. We learn just enough before everything gets destroyed, so I still don’t see depth or detail as compared to the original, longer Exodus episode which set the stage better for the story in the original. Exodus had the advantage of being longer. Since the characters hit road so quickly in this series, it will be harder to fill in backstory as they go along in 22 minutes. In the episodes aired, I would have liked to hear a Tygra soliloquy about how wrong he was about Grune, rather than mere open-mouthed expressions (angst factor). I would have liked to learn more about his adoption, and who his parents were, and what they were. Without intellect, he is a different person/character from the original show, who happens to be named Tygra. Everyone is a fighter of some kind. It seems in some respects too that Lion-o’s and Tygra’s roles/characters have switched in this series. All we know of Thundera city’s people is that they are peasants (?), merchants and the nobles. What is the religion, if any? Are there lawyers, doctors, heck, even librarians? What happened to all the people in the city after the attack? Are they dead? Lion-o should be worried (more angst) about this. They will suffer while he hunts for a solution if they live.

Thundercats 1980s was far from perfect, and certainly not adult by any stretch. Yes, there were large gaping holes, and that is why fan fiction writers evolved. I never cared for anything but the first 60 some episodes myself. But what the characters were from that original grabbed me from the first episode I saw. The characters in this series have yet to deepen, and I hope they will. For now we will just have to disagree.

MGP

Believe it or not - but that’s actually known. The first four anime and game generations takes place in a alternative Japan, the current generation most likely in America, a alternative New York.

@Nine Tiger I hope I don’t offend you but you’re not used to the modern storytelling approachings, aren’t you? These “missing links” were not without any reason being dropped in the premiere. It’s a common plot-writing tech for future episodes. You can be for sure that there will be at last one Tygra/Lion-O and Claudius flashback-scene which ties with main plot. I think we’re going to see some of the stuff in the coming episode on friday, the IGN spoiler gave us enough hints with Lion-Os eager to get his revenge (yes, spoiler alert).

I am not offended Z, I just think “the modern approach” is an unstable technique at best, that’s all. It is certainly rampant in today’s movies. There is, dare I say it, no foreplay to lure you into a world. It is just hit the ground running. Go breakneck for two hours, and then when it is all over, wonder what the heck it was you saw and experienced, before going on to the next movie.

Having watched anime, forever and a day, and reviewed a fair amount, this approach often occurs, but in the best anime, or most memorable, does not, or is tempered by character.

I think the principle sin of the first episode in technique was also that it was too short in time, and thus forced to be rushed in its storytelling.

MGP

Dude, it’s BASED on Japan. You just said it, ALTERNATIVE. They take concepts from our world and incoorporate them into their own. Thus creating a new universe.
