Is it cause he is a Thundercat?
Or is it really cause he’s not… Evil?
What are your thoughts?
He is definitely evil, he was the key to the attack in the first/second episodes, and allowed Claudus to be killed. However, so far we only know that the Sword can’t be used for evil.
If the new Sword is a sentient being like the original, it could be that it recognized the danger the elephants were in and didn’t provoke Grune. Then again, it could be a plot/animation error as well.
It could be that the sword doesn’t work the way it did in the OS, and Mumm-Ra is the only one who can’t touch it because of some spell or something.
Or it could be that only creatures that are PURE evil can’t touch it, and Grune is actually more like Tygra; angry and bitter and, in the end, easily corrupted by the promise of power (not to say that Tygra is going to be as easily corrupted). So no, i don’t think Grune is EVIL evil, but I think he has been twisted by Mumm-Ra’s evil into someone who is more evil than good.

I always thought Grune was being brainwashed, or just really weak from being in the desert so it was easy to convince him.
But his goal was always to interfere with the linage of Lord of the ThunderCats (episode - Old Friends). How can he be wanting to become king long before Mumm-Ra shows up, and not be plotting already? He was greedy back then.
Yes but he is not pure evil like Mumm-Ra is. The spell probably was just for Mumm-Ra, for others it is that it can’t be used for evil. Mumm-Ra though only wants the stone. Makes sense right?
Just look at Dragonball for a comparison. Vegeta is an EVIL GUY at the start but turns around… Kind off, he turns into a anti hero. Maybe that will happen to Grune? He wont go completely good, but who knows? He might even break the bounds with Mumm-Ra and if not joining the Thundercats. He fights them both or summin?

I can’t see Lion-O, Tygra, or Panthro letting him join them after all he’s done.
Yeah, but once you learn Vegeta’s backstory, you can see why he was such a bad guy. Grune doesn’t have a similar excuse.
But a Lion-O vs Mumm-Ra vs Grune battle would be epic.
Don’t say that. Ofc their life is different but just think about it.
Vegeta was raised with one purpose. Fight, kill and never lose. What happend? He did end up with Bulma and even had a child. You can even see his reactions when he goes EVIL again as Majiin about the family, he hates them and wants them killed.
Not saying that Grune will join them. But i don’t think Grune will stay with Mumm-Ra more. He probably will leave and do stuff by his own, like you said about the Vs thing.
We don’t know Grune’s backstory, though. We only know of Panthro’s history with him and how he ended up with Mumm-Ra. Which was Mumm-Ra getting inside his head.
I can’t see them letting him join them, either, but I can see them letting him live if it turns out the bad things he did was because of Mumm-Ra’s influence and he snaps out of it.
Maybe he could hold it but not use it and I agree that the spell that keeps Mumm-Ra from touching it might be specific to him.
Well he didn’t actually try to use it and he’s not pure evil. I imagine if he tried to use the sword against Lion-O or the other ThunderCats that it would have betrayed him.
I think the description of the episode said that Panthro and Grune have their last battle. I wonder if Panthro doesn’t kill Grune but that Lion-O and Tygra emerge back out, Grune gets his hands on the sword and tries to use it, maybe against Panthro, and the sword ends up killing Grune.
I like that idea. Yes, I like it very much. 
That does sound plausible. The sword is somewhat senient.
I really hope that’s not thet case though, he has hardely done anything..
I doubt Panthro is actually going to be the one to kill him, so this idea sounds plausible. I’d only be (somewhat) okay with it if he comes back as an awesome ghost, though. I don’t want him to die!
But I still say he’s going to be killed by a falling elephant.

I would like to know why Lion-O was able to use the sword against Tygra. In the OS when he did that, the sword broke, it could not be used against another ThunderCat.
I asked the crew about that and they said something along the lines of that he could fight melee with the sword still (like Claudus fighting Lion-O in the premiere), but that he couldn’t have used the power from the Eye of Thundera.

I wouldn’t really say Grune is evil. He wouldn’t necessarily go out of his way to harm someone if it didn’t benefit him in some way. He’s more of an opportunistic conqueror. He clearly wanted to be king of Thundera, or at least to rule as a leader. I would say this is where “mean” and “evil” kind of blurr among the lines. I would assume Grune was aware by at least the end of season one that “evil” could not possess the sword, and he therefore should have no reason to be seeking it but would rather wish to destroy it right? I don’t know, just my two cents.
