First off, there’s his classic weapon, his flail (sometimes called a morning-star, apparently erroneously), seen in “Exodus”, “The Unholy Alliance”, “The Slaves Of Castle Plun-Darr”, several other early episodes (I’m guessing “The Garden Of Delights”, “The Doomgaze” and “The Spaceship Beneath The Sands”), and of course “Tight Squeeze”, after Vultureman blows up all their tech.
He also has a shield, capable of firing various projectiles, seen twice. First in “The Slaves Of Castle Plun-Darr”, when it fires something akin to musket balls, and then in a later episode (I forget which), when it seems to fire some sort of acidic sludge.
In “The Mountain”, he’s seen wielding a thundrainium rifle. Probably in other episodes too, “The Shifter” springs to mind.
And I’m sure there’s one episode where he’s seen wielding a shortened version of Slithe’s pike (or whatever it is), which also fires something (presumably thundrainium). But I can’t think.
While we’re at it, I might as well add my apologies for my absence. My mother died last month, and things have been pretty hectic, sorting everything out. We’re getting there, though.
This is going back of couple of questions, but I was just watching “Tight Squeeze”, and, lo and behold, Monkian and Jackalman cover Cheetara in a net before tying her up! Not the image I had in my head (which in retrospect was actually Tygra being caught in a net in “Telepathy Beam”), but another example nonetheless!
As for the current Monkian question, I can’t add anything beyond LiamABC’s answers. So sorry to hear your news, Liam. Welcome back.
Sorry for you loss, Liam. You and your family are in my prayers.
The cofussion between a flial and a moirning-star is common because both weapons are really similar. I think a morning-star has less but longer and sharper spikes though.
Wikipedia would suggest that a morning star is just a spiked mace, so Monkian has a flail and Grune has a morning star. But I’ve definitely heard morning star attributed erroneously to a flail.
Thanks. Actually, that shortened version of Slithe’s weapon, I’m wondering whether that’s actually Jackalman and not Monkian - and indeed which episode it is. I need to watch them over again to check out those continuity ideas.
Anyhow, next question . . .
Normally, when Lion-O used “the catchphrase”, the beam would shoot out of the Eye in a straight line. But there were two episodes (that I can think of, maybe there’s more), where it travelled in a slightly less than straight line. What were they?
Slithe in Jackalman’s body wields the axe in “The Shifter”, but there may be another instance of Jackalman wielding the axe on his own.
In “Runaways” it transforms into a cat and bounds through the Lair, eventually picking up Mumm-Ra and launching him out the Lair head’s tear duct! This may not count, though—while Lion-O keeps the Sword raised, the signal ceases to be a beam pretty early on.
In “ThunderCubs Part I” it travels up the water pipe, through the cauldron, and then out the top of the pyramid—no way that’s a straight line.
In “Return to Thundera Part IV”, it travels in a big curve away from the Churning Rocks, and then settles on Snarf at the new Lair.
That same curve shot is used again in “Frogman”, but not before the signal bounces back and forth between all the boulders at the Churning Rocks.
I’m not sure if this one counts, but in “Slaves of Castle Plun-Darr”, when Lion-O says his catchphrase, the beam first travels straight up Castle Plun-Darr and then when it breaks through the top it bends slightly to its normal angle.
I can say. “Chain of Loyalty” does not count. The signal is a staightforward beam—it’s an additional beam of white light from the signal that shoots down to heal the Chain.
Because I had a hour to burn, I scrubbed through most of the first season and found the following possibilities (in addition to Slaves of Castle Plun-Darr):
Mandora the Evil Chaser – The signal shoots straight up from the Mudhogs’ grotto, but approaches the Lair at a much shallower angle. It’s either kinked, or the curvature of the Earth is coming into play. Dr. Dometone, The Thunder-Cutter, Return of the Driller – The same change in angle is at play here, though it’s less extreme. The Wolfrat – Lion-O is in or just outside Tygra’s Lab when he Ho!s, but the signal emanates from the Lair’s insignia. That’s probably not a straight line. Mandora and the Pirates – The signal materializes in the Third Earth sky after shooting through space, so it may or may not be a straight line in order to be visible at the Lair. Moreover, we see the twinkling of it at a particular point in the sky, only to have it shoot in from offscreen. Monkian’s Bargain – The signal exits the pyramid through the window on the far side, but comes toward the camera from the near side. The Ghost Warrior – The signal spirals away from the Eye before forming completely. When the beam has formed, a cut back to Lion-O reveals that it’s no longer eminating from the Eye. This probably shouldn’t count.
There are also numerous episodes in which the angle that the signal starts at in the stock shot of the Ho! sequence does not align with the angle at which we see it in the sky. I ignored all of those.
