With this show, when it comes to the kids; this really depends on word of mouth. Danny Phantom lasted a few seasons thanks to word of mouth. The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers reached Beatles popular thanks to word of mouth.
And for the life of me, I will never understand that. To me, that’s when Saturday morning shows started their downhill slide.
Power Rangers was a weekday afternoon show. Not a Sat morning one. At least at first.
Plus, I know from experience that I told a friend of mine in middle school about Danny Phantom when I saw a sneak peak of the first episode on Nickelodeon.
A week later, he quoted Jack Fenton saying “I was right, ghosts exist! Ghosts exist!”
See what I mean?
Middle school? make me feel old why dont you? lol I had been out of High school for 4 years before Danny Phantom came out.
Another thing that the show might depend on are toy sales. Let me put it to you this way, Sym-Bionic Titan was recently cancelled due to low toy sales. And I believe the 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was cancelled due to said reason (unless I’m proven wrong).
Toys should be easy for adults though. The point is, for this show to succeed, toy sales must be one of the factors to ensure its success.

That’s why we’re their targets. That’s why they are betting on our nostalgia and love of the series for ratings. Because we will introduce to our children and they will get ratings and money off of both of us.
It’s actually more lucrative if we’re on board than it is without us.
Edit: Why do you think the convention is NOT aimed at children. Because despite myth…Children aren’t actually the majority. There is as many adults who like watching animated tv series and movies. They are many adults who read and collect comics
Um I beg to differ. I am bonafide otaku (that’s what I am doing here) hang around on manga and anime forums. They actually have sections for Western Cartoons. Because the Japanese have a diffrent out-look we have specific genres for specific age groups. I prefer Seinen (Adult Males) and Shounen (aimed at 12-16 year old’s males) because I am girl that likes action, swords and Robots and BATTLES. Because of that I meet Adults and Children. People of all ages. I have to tell you…that THEY DO SO go around on websites to look for the next new cool cartoon. They do pounce on every piece of information. They post it too. (You’d be surprised how much info I got from a tween)

They log onto the computers while they’re in school. A large percentage actually post the most in school, and during summer breaks the forum activity slows down. because a lot of them lost their internet access.
They are much more advanced than we were at that age.Some of them are like me. I have always preferred to watch cartoons over everything else. Before I discovered anime and manga. I lived on CN…there are younger children just like me. They love the CARTOONS so much but have no one who fanboy/fangirl the series as hard as they do. so they go on the net and hang around in communities that are devoted whatever series they love.
One of the first interviews with that I saw on SPLASHPAGE with Micheal Jelenic was actually discussing Snarf not being able to talk. He laughed and said he couldn’t understand how he was the most hated by fans and everyone goes ape**** because he’s not talking. Even his haters–He also said that the core of the fanbase is adults who watched as children. That we were the ones that was really “pushing” for this series to be brought back. He actually said

Why make a series that a bunch of old fogies watched when they were younger. When they could just develop a new show to appeal to the kiddies? It’s iconic because WE loved it as Children.
Just like the Fantasic Four and the Transformers movies. Our generation outnumbered the children in the the theaters. I had to bribe my son and nephew to got to the movies with me.Because they had no interest in it whatsoever. Despite how cool it looked. They didn’t care one bit. It was us saying “Autobots roll out” with prime. It was saying “Starscreen you failed me again” with Megatron. We were the ones that complained because Megatron didn’t turn into a gun. (That’s what made him hot. Because he was the only one who could do that)…Transforming robot movies and Human/Cat Hybrids don’t have the same allure to children because you can find a 100 shows like that nowadays. It’s not as unique as when we were children. They need us…because we are the actual fanbase
How old are we in this discussion right now? I don’t see any kids racing to join a website to discuss an antiquated show that was ended it’s run over 20 years ago. WE are the target audience but they hope they can get US and OUR children too.
We are also the ones with the cash. If any kid is going to get a toy or bookbag it will be us who buys it. We will be more likely to buy this stuff because we love it Rather than say..“You already have a lot of toys” . Not the children…

Did you really create it for the “kiddies”. Will you deny that a lot of us adults will buy the figures, Tee-shirts, and even the book-bags too. We tend to “collect” things like that because it reminds of our youth. Because some are collector items–my sweet p collects Spawn action figures. I spend a ridiculous amount of money on Bleach Merchandise …I buy figures..not just busts. I buy towels, wall scrolls and I purchase the manga…
So I don’t understand why no one here seems to believe that there is no money to be made off adults when we’re the ones that spend the cash. This is what I mean by the “Stigma” attached to adults who watch cartoons. Because right away you dismiss it and say…“It’s for kids” when there is nothing that says they are truly the majority. (I don’t believe they are) If they were...Adult Swim wouldn’t exist at all.
That attitude is the difference in Western and Eastern fandoms. Because they understand that yeah some shows pander to specific age groups yet they have elements that also appeal to adults. This is why they make Seinen and Josei (adult females)which also appeals to the younger generation…like Darker Than Black and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.
…this is also why I tend to spend majority of my time on websites that are devoted to anime and not western cartoons. because of the “it’s for kids attitude” However this series prompted me to join because I want talk about it with other fans and you won’t find that many there because they prefer eastern cartoons

Because I find most young ones think that He-man 2K2 was awesome. Everyone who trashes it seems to be from our generation. To quote a user on youtube

There were a lots of complaints from the younger ones about how we complain about the series we loved as a child for being “too diffrent” than the original

We’ll have to wait and see. And as for convetions being aimed at children or not, well it really depends on the circumstances.
They WANT us to like it, they want us to support it, but we aren’t their initial target. It could survive with out us, but it can’t survive with out kids.
He-Man 2k2 didn’t fail due to the nostalgia crowd not liking it. It failed because of their initial lack of capture the youth demographic, which they themselves have confirmed multiple times. It’s the reason the second season had a different armor, look and feel. That was because when they did a focus panel of children, He-Man wasn’t cutting it until they added the Snake Armor look.
Kids weren’t buying the toys (Partially Mattel’s fault as well, which is why I’m glad they aren’t doing this one.) Which lead to the cancellation of the series. They’ve said multiple times if more kids got behind MOTU2k2 it would have been very successful.
Of course they want our business and money, that’s not even a question. But the toon is being done primarily for kids. Which we just so happen to like as well.
let’s also keep in mind that there were panels held at Comic Cons and Sci-Fi cons for Masters of the Universe back in the early 80s, that show was in no way aimed at adults.
And I’m not saying that we aren’t important to them when this show comes out. We are. But in the end, the kids will be more important.
Not going to quote all that, but I have to say I never meant to imply that ALL kids don’t look at sites and stuff. But I think it’s a minority.
And yes we’re the ones with the money…but who’s going to spend money getting that stuff for kids who don’t want it? Kids arent going to just go “Hey my parents like this show so i better check it out!” The amount of adults who buy toys and posters and stuff are not in the majority (keeping in mind that I DO buy them too.)
And honestly I don’t remember him actually saying we are the target audience. Yes we are the core of the fanbase NOW. Most kids haven’t seen the old show or know what it is. But that will change if the show is successful.
And you’re taking things I say wrong. By my saying we’re not the target audience you seem to be under the impression that I’m saying they don’t want us happy and they dont want us to watch. They do. That is why they’re getting us riled up and feeding us information right now. They want the buzz going. They want all the free publicity that we bring when we go off on our facebook or youtube pages or whatever saying how excited we are. They want Both new fans and old fans, But I firmly believe if all they have are old fans the show will fail. Every adult who liked thundercats as kids wont care about it as an adult. WE do, but not everyone is like us. This is not an either/or situation. They want both old and new viewers. But they don’t have to work as hard to get us excited. We were excited as soon as they made the announcement before even seeing footage or official pictures. We’re already going to watch it.
If we are truely the target audience then I expect the show to be on adult swim. And I seriously doubt it will be.
I’m not going to comment on He-man as I didn’t really watch it. I saw a few episodes and it was good (absolutely better than the original), but I wasn’t addicted to the show.
I don’t recall which was first, I don’t remember having to avoid the show on afternoons until that and other live-action shows started invading my Saturday mornings along with stupid cartoons that were poorly drawn.
I’m with Astrokeep on this. He has a good point and he’s basically right, this show needs new fans in order to survive.
The kids are the main target. But they want to make a project EVERYONE will enjoy. Kids are going to dig this. Believe me. It’s about damn time a show with heart and quality aired. This is it. Kids loved A:TLA, kids love Ben 10, kids love Clone Wars. They’re going to love this. It’s a mix of those show and more. They’re going to love the toys, wich already look better than the popular Ben 10 toys.
If this show doesn’t become an instant hit, there is something SEVERELY wrong with today’s youth.
Kids from my generation the 90’s generation, loved the original when it aired in Toonami. A modern day quality retelling of that should be quickly devoured by the main target audience.
Yes we can spread the word. But I don’t think it will be what this show relies on. It’ll most likely be in the same block as Ben 10, Generator Rex and Clone Wars. That alone is enough to promote it.
I hope so but the dude’s right, The Clone Wars have been doing well in the ratings.
Right now I just hope they make some comfy pj bottoms for adults, I’m wearing out my Transformers pair.
