I believe that Kaynar is supposed to sound like canine.
I think the name Addicus may be a clue that the new Monkian is supposed to be much smarter this time around, hence the way he talks. We’ll see.
Kaynar sounds like canine which is a dog. canine~jackal/Kaynar~Jackalman. I asked Dan Norton about that and he said that was it.
He said the name Addicus reminded him of Atticus and some old prison riots, but he changed the Ts to Ds because it’s different from typical “power” letters.
So far that’s three thing I love about this month: Thundercats return, my dad’s birthday, and celebrating the anniversary of the day Slithor and I met. 
That still doesn’t really make sense. Atticus is a Latin name meaning “Man of Attica”, and could refer to several different things - none of which is animal, nor powerful:

random reason for the name…should have been related to the animal IMO, like Ape-us, Gorillor or some clever version of the species.

If they were going to name him something like that they might as well have kept the name Monkian.
I second that balgus because Addicus suits this character very well.
I like the names to be honest and honestly, I like the fact that they didn’t went with the obvious.
Personally, when I heard the name Addicus, it made me think of Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. Now if he sounded like Gregory Peck, that would have been too much!
Now if he has to defend a Third Earther in court in a case involving a chiffarobe, or knew a Boo Radley, I’m going to bust a gut laughing!

Who knows. Maybe they’ll be similar in some strange round about, only if you tilt your head to the left, way.

I get where you are coming from and I agree with you. In a property where the names are mostly derived from animals “Kaynar” and “Addicus” do stand out. Personally, I don’t get why the names had to be changed. It’s not like the Thundercats have clever names, why should the villains?
I agree with Bolo and Tygra.
The TCs and main villains so far (Mumm-Ra, Grunne, Slithe) have kept the same names from the OS, and besides Grunne and Slithe, ther TCs’ names were pretty obvious when referrring to the animal they derivate from.
I agree in that Monkian is very generic, because “monkey” is the species (unlike Lion-o, Tygra, etc that refer to a specific animal within a species, which is cats, to say so… excuse if I’m not using the correct biological classification ;)). Monkian could have his name changed to a particual class of monkey, like Bolo suggested.
Jackalman, on the other hand, is kind of ok because jackals are a specific kind of canine (he wasn’t named Canino or somthing like that, fortunately), but “Jackalman” is, well, a Jackal-Man… maybe he could have been named Jacko, Jackalo or Jackalee or something like that this time around.
But naming them with names that have nothing to do with the animal they represent… personally I don’t like it.
Regarding names, I always hoped that both series would create stable naming patterns, sort of what the idea was originally with Vulcans on Star Trek.

I’m sorry, but to me names like that just sound silly and frankly completely unimaginative.
I imagine they would’ve renamed the Thundercats too if they thought they could’ve gotten away with it without horrendous fan backlash.

It would have been nice to have a naming convention for the Mutants. But like Balgus said, I think you can only have so many animal-sounding names. For our story we had a few, like Slithor, whose name we settled on to make the connection with Slithe, since he was his nephew. From there we were kind of hard-pressed to come up with other Reptilian-sounding names, becuase all we could think of were things that were evocative of reptiles (scales, crawling, slithering, hissing, etc.) Krasst was the only other one we could think of. Future Reptilian characters probably will have names more in line with what’s in the show (Kaynar, Addicus, etc.)
Same with the Thundercats. Eventually, there comes a point where you have to abandon then nomenclature because you run out. Ocelli and Felina were pretty much the last and most obvious names we could think of because the old show hadn’t used them. But Xendara was a name we totally made up out of thin air. And even in the show they seemed to abandon it as well; “Leah” is a terrestrial name after all. Other names we came up with were sort of in-jokes based on cats in pop culture. The name of our fighter pilot, “Gar” was short for Garfield. And the Thunderian ship “Sirrom” is the name Morris spelled backwards, after Morris the cat of the old Nine Lives cat food commercials.

I can get behind Kaynar since it does seem like it has a root to what animal he is, but Addicus is just too random for me.
By stable naming patterns, I meant just that. Animal names were not implied in my comment. For example, I use stable patterns in my fan fiction based on language. If you see “Ri” anywhere in a name “Light” is a part of the name’s meaning, and so may give you insight into the character. I should have made my point more clearly. I do think you run out of animal names too quickly in general, but combining them with prefix or suffix, you could conceivably generate quite a bit of names.
I used Veezmar and Jezrane for Vultureman and Jackalman, respectively, preserving the V & J from the original character names as a tip of the hat.
