“So, I spoke to one of the former Producers of “Adventure Time” at the Alternative Press Expo this past weekend (won’t name names). Mainly because I knew he worked at Cartoon Network & I wanted to complain to someone about them cancelling “Thundercats”. He said that whenever comedic cartoons, such as “Adventure Time” are the most popular (like now), CN pulls the plug on their action shows (and vice versa when action shows are more popular). What they do is pull the show off air for a few months, & then return it to the air without announcing or promoting it. Naturally, the viewers will have dropped off (no one knew it was coming back). CN then uses this rationale to drop the shows completely: “Well, we brought it back, but no one was watching.” That’s exactly what they did to the new He-Man show back in 2003/2004. That’s exactly what they did to “Thundercats” last year. And this is exactly what is going on with the DC Nation block right now.”
If you honestly believe what you reposted, I’ve got some prime, beach front property on the moon to sell you real cheap.
I’d look to a more reliable source than the rant of an individual who has no ties to the series or CN. They come across more as an upset fan than anything else. If CN was pulling its action shows in favor of comedy, we wouldn’t be getting new episodes of Dragons, Ben-10, et cetera
When one considers the fact that that the DC Nation pull has everything to do with Milestone comics issues and nothing at all to do with “Adventure Time” the user comment you reposted comes off as very flimsy.
It amounts to “a company that is in operation to create profits is purposely keeping profits out of its coffers” and that makes as much sense as 2+2=7.
I’m not fully committed to this theory. That’s why I put “May Have” in the title.
And I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if this is true. Networks are still run by people, and people can be incredibly stupid. Remember CN Real? I doubt that made them any profit, but they did it anyway. I also know that executives can have favorites while disliking other shows. Some cancel popular shows simply because they want to replace it with their own programming and build up their reputation, rather than try to nurture properties they had no prior hand in. And it’s entirely possible that whatever group of executives are charge of CN right now see no value in action shows when they could replace them with comedy ones.
If this wasn’t deliberate, then I would have expected CN to see how badly they handled ThunderCats in promoting it and do some kind of damage control. But they haven’t, so if they didn’t try to sabotage it, it still means they don’t care very much about it since they gave TC no promotion when it changed time slots and aired new episodes.
Also, Dragons is not that action heavy, and the new Ben 10 is much lighter and softer and sillier than the previous one. I don’t watch Ninjago, but it also looks pretty light.
If you read the article, there’s a link that also mentions other reasons DC Nation could have been delayed.
Yeah, CN Real didn’t go over that well but it was something to try. Much in the same way AMC, Food Network, and ScyFy are now doing Reality TV which is outside their areas of norm. It’s a popular vein in todays culture thus perfectly understandable that even CN would try to capitalize on it.
Let’s be honest, even Thundercats tried - and massively failed - to capitalize on the idiotic Twilight love triangle trend because it is “popular” in todays culture.
The big lesson to take away is that just because something is popular doesn’t mean it has to be done but more often than not, will be done for the sake of being done.
You might have “expected CN to see how badly they handled ThunderCats in promoting it and do some kind of damage control” but the fact remains that that is just your opinion. There are plenty of others who feel CN did what it was supposed to do via airing the series, did it well, and that the fault of Thundercats lack of success stems from the production crews shortcomings and failures, not the broadcast company.
As far as new episodes and airing dates, it’s not like CN.com didn’t announce new episodes and times. Not like the Thundercats FB page didn’t announce new episodes and times. It’s not like fans didn’t have access to this wonderful thing called the internet.
Me, I’m not going to blame CN for viewers being lazy and unmotivated.
You seem to be under the impression that CN is the company that comes up with promo ads to run. That is juts not the case. Promos are primarily put together by the creative team to advertise their show. The only time CN really gets involved in promos is when they are collages of multiple shows. The lack of Thundercats promos is again, the fault of WB and the TC Crew, not CN.
Dragons is not that action heavy? That tells me you really haven’t watched the films or the series. Same goes for Ben-10; just because it is lighter doesn’t mean it is devoid of action.
To me, it seems more like you are on a Salem witch hunt searching for scapegoats to burn at the stake.
you’re right after the hiatuses CN did announce when the show was coming back…but they announced the return less than a week before the return.
Also dragons isn’t action heavy. I’ve seen the show. They don’t battle anyone. They mostly have a formula of “the dragons caused a problem, so how do we work together to fix it!” I don’t even think the series has an actual villain.
if i’m to blame anyone, i would blame both the production team and the network for not doing what they were supposed to do to keep this show on the air.
I have seen the movie and the specials and every episode. It may have action in it, but I don’t consider Dragons an action show. And being light in tone is a factor, because it means it’s more comedic and less dramatic. Maybe I should specify it as them not being action-dramas.
You keep telling me and others that it’s all my opinion, and you keep acting like you’re superior, like you’re the intelligent one enlightening us with these brutally honest facts. But the fact is that it’s just your opinions as well. You’re assuming a lot when it comes to the love triangle copying Twilight. The love Triangle was only truly prominent for a few episodes at most, and did not encompass the entire series like some people imply. For the record, I think the triangle was handled well, because it boils down to a misunderstanding instead of anyone cheating or flip flopping between their love interests. In fact, you are the first person I have ever seen bring up Twilight, and it sounds like you’re trying to think of excuses to bash the NS.
And no, the creative teams do not make the promos, that’s the network’s responsibility. If it were any show’s creative team’s responsibility, they would have made a lot of promos to air. Compared to they was CN promotes Adventure Time, Regular Show, Dragons, Ninjago, and even DC Nation, their promotion of Thundercats amounts to so little. I saw one commercial on air announcing TC’s return. It may come as a surprise, but actual commercials probably help a lot more than just news found on the internet or social media. Sure, TC, got some internet support, but so does Korra and Young Justice and TMNT, and those shows get commercials as well and benefit from them. I remember when fans on tumblr were surprised to see ThunderCats back on air, because CN did so little to promote it. The commercials that air on CN use their graphics and their announcers, not ones that the creative teams have control over. CN is the one who decides what promos to make and when to air them. I cannot believe that you think the creative teams have some kind of say in that. And all it takes to make these is some graphics, some editing, and a voice over. CN takes the footage from the episodes and edits them together into a promo with their own graphics and voice over. How you could assume otherwise baffles me, and I seriously doubt you know anything more than I do when it comes to these things.
You think the NS was a failure? Fine. But I’m getting sick of you and others always trying to bash it, and then trying to shame and belittle people who did like it, treating us like some kind of dimwitted minority with bad taste, and then act smug about it because it’s canceled, somehow proving you right. It’s coming real close to feeling like trolling. Quit telling others that it’s “just their opinion” when almost everything you say is just YOUR opinion and doesn’t carry anymore weight.
I am never going to view this series as a failure, because it never failed me. I know it has flaws, but so does every show. So if all you’re going to try and tell me is “It failed because it sucks and you’re an idiot for enjoying it,” then find something else to do. Arguing with you isn’t worth my time, because we’re both going to go around in circles and get nowhere. I expect that you’re probably still going to act smug and tell me I’m a quitter who’s too afraid of losing an argument to you, but if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from the NS, it’s not to take that kind of bait.
I’m not saying Dragons is 22 minutes of non-stop adrenaline but it certainly isn’t a feather fall either. And there is more to action than battles. Avalanches, snow storms, other dragons can all contribute to action and Dragons has that in spades.
That you think the series lacks an actual villian tells me you really haven’t watched the series at all. If you had, you’d know that Mildew and Alvin the Treacherous are the main villians.
Merged Post:
Well, you’re the one stating opinion as if it is fact. I just remind you that you are just giving an opinion, not fact. At least when I present my opinion, it is usually highlighted as such.
:pSomebody has to play Devils Advocate and present an opposing point of view; keeps things in a natural harmony and balance - yin and yang. If everything was just yin-yin it wouldn’t be balance, it’s be a panda.
Umm, I never said the Twilight romance of the Thundercats was a copy of Twilight. I did say that Thundercats tried to capitalize on the popularity of it which it did - just as other shows have done much to the same results.
It’s fine that you think the triangle was handled well just as it’s fine that there are people that think politicans tell the truth to get elected. Different strokes for different folks and that is wonderful.
If I’m the first person you’ve seen bring up Twilight, you need to get your eyes checked. The comparisson has been made on Facebook, TV Tropes, IMDB, TV.com, and various other fan forums.
Hate to tell you (because you’ll probably throw another tantrum) but creative teams only create what they are paid to create. No order for promos means they aren’t going to make promos. The reason why CN promotes shows like “Adventure Time” is because CN is both the creative and broadcast source. Dragons gets promos because Dreamworks paid for them. Even TMNT merchandise is being promoted on CN because Nickelodeon paid for the promos to air. The reason Thundercats didn’t get promos is because they weren’t ordered. Common sense really. You can also learn these things by taking advertising classes. Many fine educational institutions offer such courses. The fact that I have successfully completed such classes might give me a bit better insight into the workings of advertising than you have.
Following your logic, it’s not Sony Animation that creates the trailers for Hotel Transylvania but rather ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, Turner, et cetrea and that clearly isn’t the case at all.
I have said that I find it failed I certain areas and succeeded in other areas but that’s it. Never said it was a complete failure but somehow I doubt that matters given your closing temper tantrum. You assumed much in it and made a royal a*s out of yourself in doing so but I won’t hold that against you. I won’t even ask if you prefer Pampers of Huggies, I’ll just say that I enjoyed debating with you until you went childish at the end.
I hope that after you have taken a moment or three to compose yourself, you might be willing to return to a tactful exchange and not such immaturity.
You replied as smugly and condescendingly as I expected you to, which doesn’t seem very mature to me. Your posts are riddled with flame bait, and if you really cared having a discussion, you would actually respect opinions instead of so blatantly implying that they’re stupid. You act innocent to make those you rile up seem in the wrong, claiming it’s all just your opinion and I don’t have the right to be mad at you. Lines like “It’s fine that you think the triangle was handled well just as it’s fine that there are people that think politicans tell the truth to get elected. Different strokes for different folks and that is wonderful” further convince me that the only reason you’re even here is to try and get guys like me angry.
And your failure to understand how a network advertises the shows it airs is all the more reason for me to not give anything you say any credibility.
Let’s keep it friendly guys Gold Lion posted this as a theory/speculation from the offset so there isn’t any need to be rude. If you don’t agree with it, that’s fine, but please do so in a respectful manner
NS is on ‘hiatus’ until the toys start selling well and their is a demand for them…so I’m sure the announcement of a second season should be anyday now. LOL.
I am respecting you by telling you this. If the toys had been selling well they wouldn’t have taken the show off the air that was promoting their sale.
If CN really cared for this series they wouldn’t have gotten Bandai to do the toys, they would have promoted the show as much as that garbage, Level-Up, they would have gotten more merchandise like more then one video game, more clothes, sound tracks, downloadable content and other collectables. They also should have at least rerun the series around the time the kids were getting home from school. They should have planned better for the products release dates and shows airing dates and also made merchandise for both kidds and fans of both the original(no I do not count bandai) and new series.
Maybe CN were just disappointed with what Jelenic and Studio4C produced. http://www.thundercatslair.org/
Look at the top right hand corner, thats the promo image CN used to announce the new Thundercats series. Thats what I was expection Lion-O and the the Thundercats to be like, an update of the hero we all grew up watching…instead we got an Anime Emo with spikey hair.
It’s unlikely that CN would have picked up the series if they didn’t like the concept the producers pitched, and the pitch would need to have shown off the anime style character designs. If the network didn’t like those designs, they probably wouldn’t have picked up the show in the first place.
It’s easy making a sales pitch and making concepts look good on paper. Delivering a well writen, engaging and exciting episode every week and fulfilling what was originally pitched is another story.
