You know this one. A major big budget film based on the game by Hasbro that features…aliens?
Reviews of this film are mixed suggesting it’s just medicore but nothing really great. But there are reviews suggesting it’s fun but that’s it. Oh, and at the box office, it’s apparently doing worse than Dark Shadows.
Yeah, I’ve read IGN’s review as well as saw Bob Chipman’s review, and sadly they confirmed what a lot of people already suspected. Like Chipman, though, I wanted to hope that the early prognostications would be wrong and that the movie would turn out to be at least decent. But sometimes, the first impressions really are right.
It’s a shame, especially when there’s some good actors in it, including Liam Neeson and True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard. I heard even Rhianna was pretty good in her big screen debut. And Taylor Kitsch? He’s a good actor, but between this and John Carter, he’s having a rough go of it in his film career.
Also, somehow I can’t help but wonder if they would have had better luck just turning the thing into an honest-to-goodness Space Opera and make it more like the recent spinoff game Battleship Galaxies? It at least would have made more sense having them fight aliens in that context rather than on present-day Earth in the ocean.
Yeah, it’s pretty good. I have it. The closest thing I can compare it to maybe is the game Star Fleet Battles by Amarillo Design Bureau or its related games like Federation Commander or Star Fleet: A Call to Arms.
Right now, I’m hoping there will be expansions for it soon to add additional ships and/or factions, as it seems to be designed that way. As it is, I’ll be bringing it along with me to Balticon next weekend along with a few other tabletop games for their game room!
I think the problem is that because the game has no set story or characters, it just doesn’t seem to translate as well especially concerning the box office results.
Clue has a story and characters that you can make into a movie however.
As for Battleship Galaxies, someone obviously put alot of effort into that game because I read about an entire universe featuring characters and the enemies used for the game.
Now that I have seen it for myself, it’s not terrible but it’s not bad. It’s simply… average. Just average.
It’s a by the books summer popcorn film that has a premise you’d see as a parody on The Critic really but for what it is, it’s just okay.
What I noticed at times is that even the filmmakers knew it was a silly premise to go with so there were scenes where it was over the top on purpose like an alien’s teeth getting knocked out.
I would’ve liked it if they at least pushed it a little bit so it’d be gloriously silly but awesome. Oh, and Rhinna was pretty good actually, she wasn’t annoying. In a way she reminds me of Vasquez from Aliens. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were watching Aliens for reference but oh well.
But I’ll give them credit for originality for the most part though even I noticed they ripped off the Predator in some aspects and they were underused technically as I was hoping to see scenes from their point of view as promised by Peter Berg but I really like that both sides were thinking of actual battle strategics.
I think Bob Chipman put it best in his review when he compared the making of this movie to a story about a French chef who tried to replicate a Big Mac: despite his great culinary talents, no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t do it. And he said the same thing is pretty much what happened with Battleship, in that this is what happens when a bunch of otherwise talented people are trying to emulate Michael Bay. And later he goes on to say that since the blockbuster movie mentality changes pretty quickly, and that we are now living in a post-Avengers world where audiences can now see that smart plotting and good characterization can help to enhance a multimillion dollar summer movie, Bay’s “blow up everything” approach just seems out of style now.
Oh, and Hammy, be careful what you wish for. Considering Hasbro’s apparent lack of concern for quality in the movies based on their toys that they sign off on, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if next time around, they gave us something like this…
Which they let him do. And like many, I have to ask, “Why?” Most people don’t think Adam Sandler is really all that funny. And to many, he’d be the last person you’d think of to write a movie based on Candyland. I’ve heard Robert Smigel is also attached to this project, but that doesn’t seem to be enough to allay the concerns of many that at the end of the day, it’s still going to be an Adam Sandler movie.
It depends on what they’ll do. Last I checked, Hasbro wanted it to be a bid budget LOTR-like epic. In the interest of fairness though, Adam Sandler can do well with the right script. Heard he was great in Punch Drunk Love. He can be a good actor when he’s given the right material.
That, and that they also reportedly want to post-convert it into 3D. But more likely it’s because of The Avengers.
So far it’s looking like the big summer movie releases are getting pared-down. Right now, it’s looking like the only other big releases coming out will be The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man and Prometheus.
