I think it’s a full reboot. Anime does this all the time…there’s always the OVA/OAV and then a full blown TV series–same characters, but a different sandbox to play in.
It’d be way too convenient to have all of the original characters reincarnated a few centuries later at the same time.
I’m ok with a reboot. I think the new origins sound just as interesting as the series that captured my heart as a little girl. It also seems a little more grown up–targeting the 30-something original fans as much as the younger new fans.
I really hope they don’t do that. Even if they wanted to go with a reincarnation plot, to discover that the ancient ThunderCats who defeated Mumm-Ra were a young Lord Lion-O whose father was Claudus, whose mentor was Jaga, whose pet was Snarf, whose team consisted of Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro, Wilykit, and Wilykat, whose people were betrayed by Grune and whose chief mutant foe was named Slythe, to find all the same characters today with exact same name screams impossible. No, I think a reinvention of the series without using the original in the new mythology’s history is best.
I would not be opposed to the ancient race of Thundercats being our heroes in a past life, just not the OS characters and their story. It could be neat if they found a hidden temple or something that contained statues of those ancient ThunderCats - a lion, a tiger, a cheetah, a panther, and 2 wildcats. Yes, that could be very cool.
I am probably responsible for that theory. While I agree that having the same names and relationships (father/son, mentor/mentee, etc) is corny it could make sense otherwise.
The new series’ Lair looks like the original series’ Lair. New series mentions that it was ThunderCat ancestors who first defeated Mumm-Ra, the original series had Mumm-Ra resting in his pyramid because there were no threats to him until the ThunderCats landed and defeated him time after time. And the new series has a Tower of Omens that has a striking resemblance to the Tower of Omens in the original.
But even this theory isn’t perfect. For this to work, you would have to ignore episodes 111 through 130 of the original. The ThunderCats can’t rebuild their home planet if they remain on Third Earth.
I’d rather this be the case than the theory of Mumm-Ra being a ThunderCat turned evil.
Not only that but didn’t Mumm-Ra and his Pyramid move to Thundera as well?
And if that theory was true I don’t think they would’ve called the country just “Thundera.” They already had the original Thundera, and when it was reformed for some reason instead of calling it Thundera again it was New Thundera. But anyway They already had a Thundera so why call the kingdom on Third Earth that too? Doesn’t make sense. Either that or the Thundercats were extremely uncreative at naming things.
I think you have the theory mixed up. I’m saying for the theory of it taking place centuries after the first to work the ThunderCats couldn’t have left to rebuild New ThunDera. For it to work, they would have had to defeat Mumm-Ra in The Last Day (just like the episode went). Then start building a civilization on Third Earth that included more than 2 buildings instead of returning to New ThunDera.
The creators specifically said everything in the new series is taking place on one planet, Third Earth. They said having multiple planets was too complex.
Maybe they will keep the backstory vague enough that it can’t be confirmed or denied that the new series takes place long after the original.
I think in the original, it was called New ThunDera to make it easier to identify when someone was talking about stuff from Old ThunDera. Having it be New ThunDera saved the characters from bringing up ThunDera exploding and reforming over and over. Otherwise, they’d have the awkward time of saying something like “(insert situation) happened a long time ago, back before ThunDera exploded” rather than “(insert situation) happened on Old ThunDera”
Well yeah, they resemble the original because they’re reinventing the series, intentionally wanting to keep some similarities to the OS to keep fans happy. I don’t think there is any reason to believe it’s more than that.
I like my idea and that the ancient ThunderCats who defeated Mumm-Ra were foreshadows of our current heroes but not their characters and stories from the 1985 cartoon.
Considering this new cartoon is using the belief of evolution for the ThunderCats and that they have evolved, thus the Thunderians with tails are less evolved, it would be interesting what those ancient ThunderCats looked like, if they weren’t, perhaps, even more catlike.
I don’t think that’s the case at all (that the ancient Thundercats who beat Mumm-Ra will be less evolved). I mean you see one of the ancient Thundercats that defeated Mumm-Ra in that mural in the very first trailer we saw. He had no visible tail and in fact looked almost just like Claudus (which makes since if you assume that he is the first King of Thundera and Claudus and Lion-O are descended from him.)
I think it has more to do with what type of cat they are rather than how “evolved” they are.
I have to agree with what codeofthundera just said. The only reason they resemble the previous series is because they are redoing it and have to have some similarities. I think that the idea that this is in the future from the previous episodes just because of what Claudus says about the thundercats defeating mum-ra is far fetched and a bad idea. There were thundercats before the original series ones too so why wouldn’t there just logically have been other thundercats before the current cast in this new series too.
Eh, it says it’s not available in mobile and I don’t have the time tonight to sit around forever for it to load to my desktop. I don’t understand why some YouTube videos say they’re not available in mobile.
It was pretty much exactly what I was expecting and so far I’m very pleased. Voices are great and the Animation is good. Just keep in mind that was only 9 minutes of an hour and the most exciting parts weren’t really included in it.
Just saw it earlier, I was happy with most of it. I didnt like WilyKit and WilyKat’s voices. Also, the look of some of the natives..some of them look like the Swat Kats. I liked the overall ‘dark’ tone though.
What I think would be cool is if they find that mural and it is actually a prophecy. That someone long ago foresaw Lion-O defeating Mumm-Ra and that image is actually an older Lion-O doing just that.
Just thought that would be a cool explanation for it.
That could be. They say it was prophesied in the trailer. I would hope it doesn’t take quite that long to defeat him though. I know he’s supposed to age during the show, but I don’t want him to age that much. lol
