The Egyptian men wore skirts. Also fashionable Egyptian women of the high class typically had at least one breast exposed. You don’t see that in the movies! 
I never thought of it as a kilt. I thought of it more as something they wore in ancient Egypt, the men didn’t wear pants back then.
