Who/What are you collecting (Super 7)

I was wondering what everyone is currently collecting and planning to collect as far as Super 7.

As a bit of background, I collected Transformers for many years and at one point got to over 1,500+. Eventually I wasn’t happy with the many bookshelves of figures and I cut back on buying and then I started selling some and put some away for future sales or donations. I cut down to a much smaller display of what I really care about and was much happier with it. I don’t know why, but less was more.

So far, I’ve been buying the Super 7 Ultimate Thundercats and have enjoyed it, but it occurs to me that it may end up like Transformers where one day I will have “too many” and it got me wondering if I want to be a completist and pick up everything or if I want to be more selective.

Some stuff I 100% want - the Thundercats team, the Mutants, Mumm-Ra (mummy & ever living), Lunataks if they are done, and maybe a few others like Mandora, Hachiman, Jagara, Claudus, Snow Meow, etc. However, do I want to get the Berserkers? Should I order Hammerhand? I’m also not so sure about Mirror Lion-O or Snowman of Hook mountain. What about other characters that come along that are not really the core of what I like about Thundercats? As an example, if Super7 makes Screwloose, is that something I want?

Also, it’s important to me how they display in a way that’s not overcrowded (and do I need/want a Thundertank to display with them)? Should I just get them anyway, so I won’t have regrets if I decide I want them later?

I know some other threads talk about specific waves, but questioning myself on where the overall collection is going made me interested in wondering overall what others are planning to collect.

Are you planning to be a completist on either Thundercats Ultimates or ReAction? Are you only buying certain figures (first season, appearing in certain episodes, specific team, or some other arbitrary set)? Are you buying vehicles/playsets? Why are you choosing what you are choosing - character preferences, space, money, etc? Or is everything just on a character by character, wave by wave basis?

I’m getting everything for obvious reasons. Its my favourite cartoon / toyline so I am ALL in. Variants, exclusives, vehicles, the lot.
If this line ends up like MOTUC and carried on for 10 years then I’d be over the moon (though they released a bit more each year than currently).
I did a quick sum the other day and found out of the 36 figs LJN did we’re 19 in with S7 (not counting the creatures), so 17 to go. (Also excluding Kit & Kat). If your aim is to collect what LJN released that’s a nice small group of figures to own that you can call “complete”. Toy prices however are hiking. Will fans be happy to pay say $65 for a Screwloose figure? Perhaps. $85? I doubt it. I know S7 is it in for the long haul. I just hope the price of plastic does not increase so drastically that it puts buyers off. For that reason I would say get them all. It may end up being a medium sized line, but with very special figures that never got made in toy form before.

I want them all. TCats was my first love. That said, if they get too cute or inaccurate I have no issues passing on some items. But I don’t think they line could really continue to a point where I wouldn’t be interested. It will end before that happens, at least for me.

I am into Thundercats from the Ultimates! line. As long as I can have the Thundercats and Evil Mutants teams I will already be happy. If I have more, that will be awesome.

Have you seen the prices in the UK? I just had a quick look and if you but they entire wave 5 it works out to the equivalent 65usd a fig. I saw one site selling Tygra for the equivalent 75usd on pre order. If I were still living there I’d be out.

Well you will then fall over… they sell them locally for $100 each!!!
Importing them yourself comes to about $80-$90 each, depending in how you ship them.

These things are pushing their luck at 50, 55 is getting cheeky. 100 for these figures is an outright piss-take. I hope you’re not paying that? I have all the Thundercats figs released so far and I can’t say I think any of them are particularly living up to being “Ultimate”. the one others S7 fig I have is the TMNT Muckman, now that is a good figure, my figure of last year if I was to rank them. Pains me to say that as a Thundercats guy. I wish we had as many options as the TMNT crowd.

I don’t buy local, get it from BBTS but the courier fees are still excessive. Gotta work out what it cost once shipping is added but it is less.

I’d love to be “all in” on Super7 Thundercats but with the prices and my being picky it’s not going to go that way. Don’t get me wrong, I have and will continue to buy most of the Super7 Thundercats releases but some things I will have to pass on. As much as Thundercats is my ultimate favorite pop culture property, if figures have inaccuracies or other issues that I can’t see past, I can’t justify the purchase. I’ve already experienced this with a few of the Thundercats figures from Super7 (sadly passing on Grune due to the way his hips look, for example). That said, I am generally very excited about the line and supporting it.

As far as other lines I am into…Super7 definitely has a corner on my wallet at the moment. I will be collecting the SilverHawks, GI Joe, TMNT and a few Transformers Ultimates. Again, selectively, I am not “all in” on anything. Beyond Super7, I’m into MOTU Origins, GI Joe Classified. There is a lot of great stuff out there targeted directly at people my age and I am a sucker for it haha. It’s a fun time to be into toys, if a bit financially stressing.

I buy some Transformers, but not in the intention of collecting. The years their figures have been released it became stagnant and not valuable to collect that increases value because Hasbro keeps making reiterations of each transformer with better transformations than the previous that the earlier ones become a waste of money to spend with. Unless it’s the classics or a retro of them. Always dreamed of buying any combiners that I didn’t have as a kid but end up not rushing or suddenly losing interest for unknown reasons. I can count the number of TF I own to maybe less than 10 now, the rest were given to godsons and so.

I buy anything random toys related to the cartoons that I have seen in the 80’s that I have never owned. I bought the 2 Bandai SOC Voltrons because I never had them as a kid. Not really into TMNT or wrestling or Marvel/DC figs but I do remember them playing from my neighbor’s loot back then. I only bought a few MOTU from S7 for nostalgia but not much on the Mattel Origins retros other than the vehicles and the cats. Actually didn’t expect I’ll buy Castle Greyskull retro because that was really cheap for today’s collectible standards. Only started this TC Ultimates coz I never owned or played them, and there seem to be future value despite the figure QC issues. Not into Silverhawks but thank S7 for nostalgia. All-in-all, I don’t really have any one cartoon toy fix but just buying some from time to time when I wanted to be reminded of my childhood. Or if I need to start stop-motion animation and select the toy characters I want to animate, and mostly some of it are in Figuarts.

You would be surprised how much the S7 MOTU figs (other than Vintage) are selling now.

You are right about Transformers. They pushed the same characters over and over and eventually you get burnt out on buying Optimus Prime or Megatron for the 20th+ time. A combination of that plus the drastic price increases has a lot of fans slowing down on buying. I imagine the prices are also stopping a lot of kids from getting into toys.

For the toy’s future value, I think the amount of product and new products is a big factor. There are also the Chinese knock offs of Masterpiece figures and Hasbro themselves re-issuing figures.

It’s interesting you brought up increasing value as part of collecting. The value of figures in the past hasn’t been a big thing for me. I open almost everything and haven’t thought much about the value in the future. However, as I’ve been trying to downsize my toy collection and as the prices are going up for all toys, I have certainly become more aware of the value of figures. Although the value of most stuff I’ve sold has generally gone down, I find myself content to be getting a little bit back when I sell them. I look at it almost as if I paid the difference for the fun I had owning the things for the years I had them.

I know on some youtube interviews Brian Flynn made a point of saying he doesn’t want the Super 7 figures to lose value so they don’t overproduce them. I guess it shows a difference in the mentality of something directed more at collectors (Super 7) versus something directed at retail or kids (Hasbro/Mattel). Or maybe Brian is a good salesman and knows what his audience wants to hear.
