Who is watching the Obama inauguration?

Just wondering who plans to watch his speech, and I guess in general, what people’s thoughts are about Barrack Obama?

Chris here…

I don’t know enough about Obama’s policies to make a judgement call there - the only thing I’d say is that, as somebody who very strongly believes in racial equality, I think it’s wonderful to see an African-American President of the United States!

If I can get away with saying this, I also think that George W. Bush did a lot of damage for the US’ standing in the world, and I think that, whatever Obama’s domestic policies, I think he will be held in much higher international esteem than Bush.

Looking at Obama today as an “outsider” (living in the UK), it feels like a great new dawn for the US - however, a lot of Brits (and a lot of Americans) felt the same about Tony Blair where he became Prime Minister of Great Britain (I wasn’t one of those people) and look how that ended up! I hope Obama can learn from the mistakes of others and go on to become one of the all-time great US Presidents.

Take care…

Good points Chris,

There is a flood of optimism that Obama can ‘save’ the economy and ‘save’ jobs and ‘save’ healthcare and single handedly restore America’s reputation.

Realistically he can’t do all of those things, but time will tell whether his government makes things better or worse. As a close neighbour of the US I know we Canadians are hoping for a better experience with this new man at the helm.

He’s very charasmatic and seems to be a decent human being. I certainly hope he does well.
