Which characters would you keep in, which would you cut from the WBTC show?

Ok so I’ve voiced my opinion on this in about every conceivable thread possible, but I figure I would both share it here again and start a new one to get everyone else’s take. Basically which of the RBTC characters (ignoring any potential LJN copyright snafu) would you want the WBTC show to keep, and which would you like to see cast into Dark Side never to return?

Any not listed I’m pretty much indifferent to, these are just very strong yes and no characters for me. I’m also ignoring the obviously already mentioned core 4 Cats

Keep

  • 4 original mutants (S-s-slithe, Vultureman, Jackalman, Monkian)
  • Grune
  • Safari Joe
  • Jaga
  • Capt. Cracker
  • Mumm-Ra (both forms)
  • Hachiman
  • Hammerhand
  • Ma-Mutt
  • Mandora

Cut

  • Amok, Luna, Tug Mug
  • Bengali
  • Pumyra
  • all other Snarfs besides Osbert

Why the heck would you cut Bengali and Pumyra (my two favorite characters)!?

Anyway these are mine:

Keep
All the LunaTaks (especially Alluro)
Safari Joe (The Tcats had trouble with this guy, his objective was to kill-period.)
Jaga (I just cant wait to see Ghost Jaga in Anime form)
Grune (Make him even more aggressive in this series)
Captain Shiner (I thought he was interesting with his whole neutral side)
Hachiman (would fit in with the current anime style perfectly)
The Demolisher (under rated villian, he had a serious yet insane vibe)
Zaxx (just loved his design!)

Cut
Captian Cracker (too annoying)
Ma-Mutt (Unless hes a big drooling monster pit bull)
VultureMan (He would just look funny..)

I would cut off the stupid cyborg teddy bears… always disliked them! Oh, and Mumm-Rana. I was never fond of that concept.

Everybody else, I’d keep.

Those are two of my favorites too!

Keep
All the LunaTaks (especially Chilla)
Mandora (Great character)
Grune (He’s one of the coolest villians, and there is so much they can do with him)
Tashi (One of my favorite episodes)

Cut
Ma-Mutt (Just don’t like him)
Berbils
Hachiman (Generic Samurai, he annoyed me) (I know others love him though)
All Snarves (If we must have one, then there should only be Snarf)

I just see them as watered down versions of Tygra and Cheetara. I don’t think they’re as dynamic and when the new Thunderians were introduced to the show, Cheetara, Tygra, and Panthro lost screen time to them. Lynx-O was at least dynamic in that he was blind and had heightened hearing. But I really didn’t care that much for him either. I thought he almost became the secondary hero of the show due to the number of episodes that resulted in some angle where every Thundercats was affected by or captured by someone EXCEPT Lynx-O and it was because he was blind, or had this superior hearing, and he wound up saving them.

All in all, I just felt the screen time would have been better served w/ the original 4 Thundercats is why I put this list together.

Guys, Guys, GUYS!
I realise not every1 will agree with each other by here but you have GOT TO get rid of the Lunattacks all together! Worst introduction to the serious ever IMO.
Yes they needed some fresh blood for the bad guys, NO - it didnt need to be a bunch of completely silly circus freak show like mis-fits! (Saw a comic of TCats with an invasion of dog-like enemies, like demolisher, seems far better new bad guy storyline).

KEEP
As for other, I think we all agree Jaga is a must keep, Grune (prob best bad guy EVER, and best options for neat storylines), Mumm-Ra OFC, core mutants including Rattaro, Safari-Joe very good, Hammerhand (but NOT the other berserkers!), Cpt. Shiner is very interesting, Snowman, Tuskarr, Mandora, Inflammer, Warrior Maidens, Driller, Demolisher.

Un-sure
Characters like Ma-Mutt, New thundercats (though LOVED design of BENGALI), Mumm-Rana, Berbils, Hachiman…few others…These would ALL depend on how well they adapted/improved them for the WB show.

CUT
Cpt. Cracker (really crap wanna-be comic char.), Lunattacks (as mentioned), other snarfs, Berserkers (apart from hammerhand), Dr. Dometone, Most of the 2nd season new chars. in fact!

An interesting topic, if I must say so myself. If I were to choose who stayed and who went, It’d be a tough call.

We’ll start with the 'Cats themselves.

I’d keep everyone, save Pumyra, Bengali and Snarfer as I’ll agree that Pumyra and Bengali were basically replacements to Cheetara and Tygra. As for Snarfer: I found him rather annoying than amusing. With Snarf, at least his loyalty and servitude to Lion-O was significant.

The Ro-Bear Berbils: I’d honestly keep them because they were not only the ThunderCats’ first friends on Third Earth, but they had their role in establishing the Cats’ Lair when they first arrived to Third Earth. However, if the scenario was in Thundera, I could see the ThuderCat Nobles appointing the Ro-Bear Berbils as engineers or soldiers, to aide the ThunderCat Nobles.

The Mutants: I’d keep Ssslythe, Monkian, Jackalman and Ratar-O because of their significance in the story arch. Vultureman, while having his uses, could be cut, primarily because he really didn’t have much of a position in the series, aside form being their engineer.

The Lunattacks: I honestly don’t see their point, save the fact they resided on the moons of Plundaar.

I will agree with Grune the Destroyer on cutting Ma-Mutt and Hachiman because while they were interesting add-ons, I don’t see Hachiman as a good fit for the series, albeit him being from a different time period. Having Ma-Mutt in the series is just as good as giving Mumm-Ra three nephews, named Mumm-Ro, Mumm-Ryu, and Mumm-Ren. Just no.

Mumm-Rana: I’d simply not even consider re-introducing her to the series because again, she was too minor of a character, like Ma-Mutt. In fact, the only way I could see Ma-Mutt working for the series if he was one of Mumm-Ra’s minions, perhaps a gargoyle. Even then, I’d save it for the rumored Rock Band series, which thankfully never came to fruition.

I’m surprised nobody made mention of Mandora, the Evil Chaser or the Zoo Keeper that had had the Mutants Exhiled.

Mandora: She would have made a better SilverHawks minor character than in the ThunderCats. While she was with the ThunderCats, Mandora just didn’t fit in my opinion.

The Zoo Keeper: Again, something I’d see fit better on the SilverHawks than on The ThunderCats. Come to think of it, I’d have to say the same for Safari Joe. He just didn’t fit either.

Captain Cracker and his Pirates: Again, they didn’t fit the ThuderCats feel. They were introduced around the same time that the TigerSharks were introduced, and I’d have to say that they’d be a better fit in Water-O, along with Captain Bizzarly, his crew and the Mantanas.

The Snarfs: They’d serve better as backstory fodder than supporting characters, to be perfectly honest - this goes for Snarf’s relatives, Snarfer, Oswald and Eggbert.

I’m not liking seeing folks suggesting Vultureman be cut!!! He was one of the best bad guys in the original series! Anyway here’s my keep and cut lists:

Keep:

-Warrior Maidens (incl Willa&Nayda)
-Bengali, Lynx-O and Pumyra (a lot of fans liked these in the later series and they will be good choices for Bandai to sell more toys…)
-Berbils (a cameo would be sufficient…a nod to the original, maybe helping build the Tower Of Omens (or whatever that playset is that Bandai is releasing)
-Snarfer/Snarfs (I want to see other Snarfs in the series and I’m happy for example, a baby Snarf to be named Snarfer…a sort of non annoying way to give him a cameo)
-Vultureman
-Ratar-O
-Ma-Mutt (could re-envision him as the leader of a pack of dogs that are enemies of the Snarf’s. He could work for Mumm-Ra on occasions)
-Grune The Destroyer (it’s obvious from the toy news he will appear. I’d like his story kept pretty much same as the 80’s version)
-Jaga (I just hope Jaga and Claudus aren’t merged into one!)
-Berserkers (all 4 incl Hammerhand)
-The Driller

Cut:

-Snowman & Snowmeow (should be left in the 80’s)
-Lunatacs (I’d prefer brand new Mutants to be introduced in the new series instead of the Lunatacs)
-Mandora The Evil Chaser (I liked her, but I think she belongs in the 80’s series only)
-Captain Cracker (annoying and boring)
-Dr Dometone (boring)
-Tuska’s (boring)
-Safari Joe (I found him the most boring villian, The Demolisher was cooler!)
-Mumm-Rana
-Hachiman
-all series 2/3/4 good and bad guys supporting cast (unless they are mentioned above)

Anyone not mentioned above I’m on the fence about and don’t mind whether they appear or not.

^^^^^^ Agree 150%

In fact, if I could only keep one mutant, it would be Vultureman. Hands down the most useful of all of the mutants, and tied with Monkian for the most unique (in a good way) speech pattern.

The reason i am not replying to this thread is because i need to learn and see first what the New Story is all about and then pass judgement on the Characters and Protagonists. I mean the setting, the plot and the order of events will define who should be in or out.

Good sugestions so far, though!!

Difficult one really…

I so hope they dont cut BenGali or Pumyra.. Or in fact any of the thundercat team!!

They can cut Lunatacs as they were so annoying and still are!! And tbh.. I think thats it.. They shouldnt be cutting any of the original cast tbh (excpet the bunch i cant stand, lol) as its all extra air time.. The longer the series the better

Overall, I just want the stories to be good. Any characters could be worth leaving in if they are written well.

Like:
Berbils - I felt the Berbils were usually an interesting ally. Somewhat powerless, but still helpful to the thundercats.
Safari Joe
Grune
Ma-mutt - but explain him more. I don’t like how he popped out of thin air on the original show.
Ratar-o - Maybe make him more of a main mutant eventually

On the fence:
Lunataks - I actually quite liked the lunataks in the original series, but I don’t know if they would have a place in a new series.
Ben-gali, Pumyra, Lynx-o - They weren’t bad, but I’m not sure they added enough to the original show.
Snarfs - I don’t hate Snarf as much as some people seem to. Sometimes they did get annoying though.
Warrior maidens - They were good at times, but overall I didn’t enjoy them that much. If the stories were right, they could be worth keeping.
Hachiman
Hammerhand/Berzerkers
Thunderkittens - I know they will be in the series, but sometimes I found them more annoying than Snarf ever was.

Get Rid of:
Snarf/Thunderkittens saving the day! - From time-to-time it isn’t a bad thing, but it can get annoying. Kind of like Wesley Crusher on Star Trek.
Boring Moral Stories of the Thunderkittens running away, etc.
Mandora
Captain Cracker
Snowman
The Driller

Add:
More mutants - Sometimes on the original show it seemed like there were tons of mutants. Sometimes it seemed like there were 4. I think it should be more consistently depicted how many there are. Why would the 4 of them always fight by themselves instead of having their army of mutants help them?

Add: Lion-O’s mother (even if she’s only mentioned in passing and/or there’s an image of her that gives her name and what she looked like); more Mutants with Ratar-O as their leader, with Slythe, Jackman, Monkian, and Vultureman always scheming to overthrow him (with the occasional assist from Mumm-Ra); a group of dissident Thunderians, led by Grune, who dislike both Claudus and Lion-O, and seek to depose them (with occasional assists by the Mutants and Mumm-Ra); accurate science; Pumyra and Bengali as a couple; Bengali as Tygra’s younger brother (as originally indicated back in the day); Lynx-O’s military experience on Thundera; Lynx-O’s friendship with Claudus (show how and why they became friends and if Jaga knew Lynx-O as well); WilyKat and WilyKit occasionally getting into mischief; ThunderCats and Thunderians having the physical grace, leaping ability, hearing, sight, and olifactory powers of real-life cats (Lion-O and his people don’t have to run around on four legs, but since they’re part feline, they should demonstrate those abilities to a certain degree and not rely so much on sense-enhancing technology unless they absolutely have to).
Cut: Charr-Nin (A genie and his harp makes no sense); Mandora (too much like a stilted female John Wayne); the Demolisher and his annoying drummer; Captain Cracker and his equally annoying mechanical parrot; the Driller; Dr. Dometome; the Unicorn Keepers; Mumm-rana ; Screw-Loose; Charr the metalsmith (they already have Bengali, so why outsource?); that frog creature that Jaga once fought; Amortus; the Mossland Monster (aka the Overgrown Zucchini); Soundora; the scheming Thunderian accountant and his flunky (they look more like humans than Thunderians); Oswald and Egbert (Laurel and Hardy they’re not); the gyroscope holding New Thundera together (once a planet’s gone it’s gone and no gyroscope can reassemble it); you can breathe in space without an airsuit (any science-savvy kid can tell you that you can’t do that); there’s thunder and lightning during meteor showers (bad pun and bad science, as that savvy kid will say); you can wear parkas and snowboots in a swamp (uh, no you can’t); human-looking Thunderians (these characters are supposed to be half-feline, so make them look the part).

Undecided: The unicorns (they’re self-sufficient and don’t need keepers); the Snarf planet (hmm, maybe. And then again, maybe not); the Lunataks (potentially good villains but later made to look stupid); the Inflamer (a potentially good but underused villain); the Shadowmaster (potentially good villain, but looks too human to be a true Thunderian); the Berbils, Wollos, and Bolkins; the Mad Bubbler (may be a good villian if renamed, redesigned and made more demonic); the Thunderian peasant farmer Torr (he was on his way to becoming a ThunderCat, so he may be a good addition to Lion-O’s crew); Jagara (Jaga’s sister? Who is she, really?); Leah (a future ThunderCat? It’s a thought).

One thing i would love to see emphasized and highlighted in the New Series is the duration and ferocity of the battles between Thundercats and their foes. In the original, many time you got the impression the fights ended up right before they started and lasted for a short while, even when Lion-o encountered Mumm-ra. the intensity was played down. Joaquin Dos Santos is a master in fight scenes and choreography so i expect a lot of action involved!

Also, i hope the new set of writers leave out Mumm-Ra’s weakness and fear when he sees his reflection on a mirror or Lion-o’s sword…

I don’t mind him having that weakness, as long as they don’t make it happen very often. They did it a little too much in the original show for my liking. Mumm-ra should learn from that mistake (close your damn eyes or look away, don’t keep staring at it) or find a way to overcome the weakness.

Well, Mumm-Ra at some point after numerous defeats, came up with an idea of wearing special glasses so he couldn’t see his reflection but this happened towards the end of Season 1, at “The Mumm-Ra Berbil” episode . However, I always thought this was a lame way to beat the evil wizzard after a fight.

I almost think it makes him even more formidable, that he has this one singular weakness (actually if i recall correctly, he’s also gradually weakened over time from being away from his Pyramid, possibly more specifically his sarcophagus). But, I mean to me it would seem that the character would grow less formidable over time if the Thundercats discovered in one episode he couldn’t swim, in another fire burns him so badly that he’s forced to flee, he’s allergic to some kind of mineral they could find a way to disperse on him, etc.

By the end its almost as if, with Mumm-Ra standing there with that infamous scowl on his face yelling how he’s going to destroy Third Earth and claim the Eye of Thundera once and for all, Lion-O, kicked back on top of the Thundertank, could yawn, take a puff on his already lit cigar, casually look over to Panthro and in his best Telly Savalas voice say something like “Hey Sally boy, how are we gonna kick Johnny come lately over here’s butt today??”

Panthro would furiously growl, smash the Thundertank’s control panel with his fist, and with a sharp head turn towards Lion-O and complete disregard for Mumm-Ra, spit “You know I hate it when you call me Sally boy!!!”

That’s the kind of path we’re heading down if we continually give him more weaknesses.

On a serious note though, it almost makes the Thundercats have to continually work harder to defeat and outsmart Mumm-Ra to exploit that ONE weakness, because, he could learn from a previous defeat and the Thundercats wouldn’t be able to use that angle to exploit it again.

That’s the kind of Mumm-Ra we need. One that grows more formidable as the series progresses, not less.

Grune’s already confirmed. So we know he’ll be there. Basically I’d say keep the ones who were cool and throw away the ones who were goofy.

Keep:
Safari Joe or Demolisher - I like a good hunter-type character.
Mandora - Nice liason with whatever Human space empire is there.
Hachiman - Can’t beat a time-traveling samurai!
The Warrior Maidens - Because Amazons rock!
The Snowmen of Hook Mountain - Can you imagine an army of these guys mounted on sabretooth tigers, polar bears and woolly mammoths? Frazetta would be proud!
Bengali, Pumyra and Lynx-O - Maybe not right away. Perhaps second season if it’s successful.
Capt. Shiner - Always nice to have an amoral, vaguely beaver-like space pirate with a German accent!
Mumm-Rana - Always good to know there’s something they can counter Mumm-Ra with. Also her presence could hint at a greater battle between the Ancient Spirits of Good and Evil.

Toss:
The Lunataks - Never understood their appeal as villains. Always considered them second-stringers.
Wollos, Tabbots and any other goofy Third Earth race. Berbils can stay, though.
Capt. Cracker - Only room for one space pirate. And Shiner outclasses him.
Capt. Bragg - Again, too goofy. I know it was a kids show, but a traveling space train? Only cartoon I know that made it work was Galaxy Express 999, and that was it.

I would liek to see every character from the old show in the new one, even if its just in a small non-speaking cameo. Now they aren’t afraid to change characters, if they can make a main character like Snarf into a non-talking pet then I’m sure many other goofy characters could take the same route. I can see Ma-Mutt showing up in the background but not actually being involved on any plots. I can also see the berbils being a village in Third Earth but they won’t have a big role like in the original show.

Now for characters I do want to see that we might not get to: Mandora, I thought she was pretty badass, And the other Thundercats eventually, maybe for season 2.

Nice idea! Of course I’d keep the original TCs (including thunderkittens and Jaga)

Keep

Heroes / TC allies

  • Claudus
  • Warrior maidens: they were the best Third Earth beings, and it’s good to see someone there that can defend themselves with the help of the TCs.
  • Snowman and Snowmeow: really cool, and also can give a good batlle by himself. He and teh Warrior Maidens were some of the few that were somehow self-reliants.
  • Turgamar and the Tuska people*
  • Berbils*
  • Wollows*
  • Bolkens*
  • Mole people*
  • Beats people*
  • Mycrits*
  • Those guys that live underground and Wilykit / Wilykat met in the third trial.
  • Snarver: ina small role
  • I like seeing Third Earth habitants that are allied of / protected by the TCs.

Villains

  • Mumm-Ra
  • Mutants (all 5 of them including Ratar-O)
  • Grune
  • Safari Joe
  • Mongor
  • Driller
  • Demolisher
  • Mole master
  • Spidera
  • Hammerhand
  • Cptn Shiner

Cut

Heroes / TCs allies

  • New TCs (sorry Bengali and Pumyra fans)… I could keep Lynx-O because he did bring something new, but wouldn’t make him so invulnerable to everything.
  • Wizz-Ra: too much and selfindulgent.
  • Hachiman: kind of far-fetched IMO.
  • Mandora: never thought she fit in the show.
  • Mumm-Rana: I don’t like the idea that for every bad guy there must be a good counterpart (or vice-versa).
  • Jagara: never understood why they brought her in… she remembered me of the Sankokai series (anyone?)
  • Cptn Bragg (Circus Guy): too boring and pathetic.
  • Dr. Dometome: boring.

Villains

  • Lunatacs: for everything everybody else has already said… and more lol.
  • Ma-mutt: again, kind of Snarf counterpart, and I don’t see the point of that.
  • Cptn Cracker: too annoying.
  • Tabbots (Third Earth pig-looking creatures)
