What if the Thundercats were Dogs?

Now, I can’t have been the only person who has ever wondered about this one.

Let’s say the Thundercats were Canines instead of Felines; what sort of canines would be suitable stand-ins for felines chosen for the Thundercats?

No, you’re not. I have wondered about this too

I think it’d have been interesting, but not as much as cats. Cats are said to be more independent, mysterious and agile than dogs, although are more loyal and brave (well, big cats aren’t cowards for sure lol). I think fans wouldn’t find teh idea of ThunderDogs as interesting as ThunderCats (od course, if the series had been dogs from the start, maybe no one would have thought that).

I think they would have been represented by a Wolf (the leader), a jackal, a fox (meyba the female) and a coyote for sure, and probably a dingo or a dolo for the kids. Funny thing, I always thought had they been Dogs, there would have been a Cat among the Mutants, and always imagined it to be a tiger rather than a lion. What do you think?

The series Dogs of War was interesting, but I didn’t like the characters that confronted teh TCs there; they were too limited and mostly house dogs (doberman, Afghan, rottwiler) instead of wild dogs IMO.

speaking of dogs of war. why did Ma-Mutt rebell against mumm-ra? did those comic book writers make mumm-ra really nasty toward his beloved pet?!

I’m kind of glad thundercats isn’t about dogs. there are way too many shows about dogs on tv and not enough shows about cats. Cats need love too, you know.

As I said, I think turning them into dogs wouldn’t have been that attractive to people, but not less interesting as it could have had some great characters.

Another idea crossed my mind. What about “ThunderBirds”? (SilverHawks don’t count LOL). I have made a character comparisson with these threee ideas, and got this (what do you think); the first animal is a ThunderCat, the 2nd a ThudnerDog and the 3rd one a ThunderBird:

Leader: Lion (Lion-O) - Wolf - Eagle
Strongman: Panther (actually, a leopard or jaguar, but this has been discussed a lot in the forums; Panthro) - Maybe a dingo? (A wolf should come here as well) - Hawk
Smartguy: Tiger (Tygra) - Jackal - Owl
Speedster / The girl: Cheetara (cheetah) - Fox - Somekind of seabird, or a dove
Cunning / Troublemakers / The kids: Wild cat (the kittens) - Coyote - A small bird, like hummingbirds or canaries LOL (I chose hummingbirds as they’re fast)

Curiously enough, one of the original annuals included a story called “Thunderdogs Ho!” - I transcribed all the text stories from those annuals a while back. Would anyone be interested in me sharing these stories? (From obscure out of print annuals, it should be safe enough.)

Yes please Liam! That would be interesting.

Well, I tried and looked, but there doesn’t seem to be a general file attach option on these posts anymore :frowning:

Ok, no worries. Thanks for trying!

I suppose I could upload the stories elsewhere and put the link here.

I’ve thought about this as well. Not so much ThunderDogs, but maybe TimberWolves, and the team of heroes would be lycans that actually morph into their wolf counterparts, a-la the TigerSharks, by way of a special transformation chamber, when it was go time. Come to think of it, I don’t think this has ever been done before.

Well, Visionaries had characters who could each change into a different animal - completely different means though.

True, I think they used magic. Additionally, I thought of the TimberWolves’ answer to ThunderCats Ho, being “TimberWolves Awooooo-!”

They did use magic, you’re quite right. I have the DVDs and have written several stories using those characters.

How about if they weren’t mammals at all? What about lizards? what kind of lizards would they all have been?

Actually, I think this has been done before, Road Rovers, anyone?

Panthro, I see as an alligator or a crocodile

Cheetara, a frilled lizard maybe (because of that running trick they can do)

Tygra, a chameleon perhaps (get it?)

Lion-O, probably something along the lines of an iguana or a Komodo dragon

what about the twins?

Not sure, what reptiles could fit the twins/crafty theme that the Wilys have going for them?

Chameleons?
