What do you want to see from the Sword of Omens?

My favorite was when KITT was able to affect dice rolling inside a casino from outside. Because, um, computers?

KITT and the Sword of Omens are two of my favorite things/characters from early 80s TV growing up, but they both need to be written carefully. Here’s hoping Thundercats 2011 turns out better than Knight Rider 2008/9 did.

Oh, ok. I get your point.

I wasn’t talking of when lion-O sees in what kind of trouble his friends are though, but most of all when teh eye “opens” and makles that warning sound, so lion-O could see beyond sight.

What I meant was that most of the time you heard the warning growl, and then Lion-O used sight beyond sight.

I know there were rare times when he also used Sight beyond sight for other things like viewing past events or whatnot, but the growl was pretty much always followed by SBS.

I always assumed the warning growl and SBS were part of the same extrasensory warning system.

It’s probably more what I don’t want to see. I don’t want to see Lion-O be able to pole vault with it. I want it to behave like a somewhat normal sword besides it’s ability to grow when Lion-O growls out, “Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, ThunderCats Ho” and for the eye to open. I’m good with it being able to shoot laser beams and all that.

Oh the sword DEFINITELY has to have the “fly-through-air-and-be-able-to-maneuver” power. Just incase the sword and/or Lion-O are about to fall into a nearby volcano.

But on serious matter, I am a HUGE fan of Swords with magical abilities. My fave swords were He-Man’s Sword of Power, and Lion-O’s Sword of Omens.

While an object such as that can be used as a plot-device, I’m willing to suspend my sense of disbelief, if they atleast keep consistent with it, and not have characters forget a certain ability in the next episode.

One thing I didn’t understand (I think it’s another incongruence) is that, apparently, Lion-O wasn’t able to summon the sword when someone gagged him (like in Mumm-Ra lives part 5, and another episode), but he was able to do it when he got back to his baby form in season’s 2 Time Switch.

As I see it, it should be the sword owner’s will to summon it to which it respond, not the actual words, because the bond is still there. If Lion-O lost his voice for any reason, wouldn’t he be able to summon the sword ever again, or use it to summon the other TCs?

Things I don’t understand about the Sword of Omens…

How is it that Willa could summon the Eye of Thundera? I think that it should only be able to be summoned by a ThunderCat.

Why did the sword grow and become too heavy for Lion-O on the spaceship in Exodus, but later on the Thunderkittens who were that same age could wield it and when Lion-O became a child again, he could wield it?

The sword…OHhh the sword. Sometimes I wonder why a sword cant just BE a sword, and the person weilding it make it as epic as it is. Why all the flim flam and special powers and abilites? And the orignal RB TC’s was HORRIBLE with just throwing powers onto the sword to ‘save the day’. Ugh. Even as a Kid it irritated me to no end.

I think the sword should do the following.

~ Hack

~ Slash

~ Summon.

Thats it!

Don’t forget: growl - to warn of danger. And sight beyond sight.

The growl always seemed pointless to me. In alot of the eps. Lion-o didnt hear it, or ignored it. It also seemed a bit knock offish of how Sting glowed when Orcs were nearby. I never really liked the growl..

And SbS? Well, with limitations. None of this seeing into the past or future or hearing conversations…its SbS, not HbH with SBS. haha

Its gotta have the warning growl for me. That’s always been my explanation on why it’s called the Sword of Omens. The “omen” part of course being the sword’s prophetic abilities.

I don’t ever remember him willfully ignoring it. Although sometimes it growled warning of danger, he did sight-beyond-sight, other times it growled and he just grabbed it, ready for action. Maybe he could distinguish between different kinds of growls it made and responded accordingly?

When did it display prophetic abilities? I just seem to remember it showing him what was going on at current, I don’t remember it ever showing him the future.

I thought the Sword of Omens was somehow connected with the Book of Omens and that there was something deeper going on with those things, but I really should watch the latter part of the series again to comprehend what all went on then.

Prophetic in the sense that it knew about things that were nowhere near it. And not to mention it warned Lion-O about things before they happened.

Although technically it was the Eye of Thundera, not the Sword of Omens. Cheetara has sixth sense and so does the Eye of Thundera. I wonder if there is some connection there.

Here’s something I would like to see regarding the Sword of Omens in the new series - I would like to learn what the origin is for the Eye of Thundera. In the original series, it was called “The source of the ThunderCats power.” We saw in one episode when the Eye was destroyed, how the ThunderCats became helpless. It was a power that all evil craved to get their hands on. I’m curious - where did this great power come from, what was it’s origination, who created it?

That was in the episode Excalibur, when the legendary sword penetrated the eye of Thundera and the Thundercats insignias wore off immediatly resulting in the Thundercats losing their powers.

You are bringing up a very interesting point, i would certainly like to learn more of the backstory of the Sword of Omens in the New Series!I think Mr.Zelenic mentioned at one interview that many questions will be answered.

I agree with you. If the bond between Lion-O and the Sword is so strong, the words shouldn’t be necessary. But Leonard Starr disagrees: in the script for Mumm-Ra Lives, each of the LunaTacks gets an introductory paragraph on what their powers are and which ThunderCat they will foil best. Chilla is described as a foil for Lion-O specifically because she can ice his neck and prevent him from calling the Sword.

Didn’t know that, thanks!

I can’t see how Chilla could be an opponet dfor Lion-O just because of that; Ia lways thought she would be Cheetara’s opponent, not because she’s a female as well, but ebcause she can freeze her and prevent her from using her high speed (or maybe Tug Mug was supposed to confront Cheetara?).

As I see it, the only clear TC-Lunattack relation I saw that was well-defined in the show was Tygra and Red Eye; the others not. I think they didn’t think that very well, with only 4 Lunattacks (besides Luna and Amock) and 9 TCs.

Yeah, these pages in the script are a fun read. It specifically mentions that the four main Lunatacks would only serve as nemeses to the four original adult Cats (Lion-O, Panthro, Cheetara, Tygra), the pairings being Red-Eye:Tygra, Aluro:Panthro, Tug-Mug:Cheetara, Chilla:Lion-O. But your read of Chilla as a foil for Cheetara makes sense. After all, she does stop Pumyra in her hippity-hopping tracks in Part 5.

The script is also a draft: the LunaTacks are called Luna-Tics, Aluro has a screeching ability and a psych gun rather than club, and Chilla is called Shivers! Come’ere, Shivers. Good girl, Shivers!

Page 1, Page 2, Page 3.

But we digress. The Sword should either respond to Lion-O’s call if it’s within hearing distance, OR respond to his call, mental or audible, from any distance. Alternatively, as suggested by LioConvoy, it could start off as an audible thing, and then as Lion-O grows and his bond to the Sword strengthens, it could culminate in a mental link. That would be good storytelling. Set us up to believe that the call must be heard by the Sword, and then in Lion-O’s hour of need in the series finale, after dropping breadcrumbs of a psychic link, reverse our expectations with a mental call. Dun-dun-DUN!

Thanks for those links, Zax.

Ah, the sword of Omens, I think Omens is Thunderrian for Deus Ex Machina and like others have pointed out that is what I hope doesn’t happen in the new show.
