I noticed a tiny detail while looking over some of the new ThunderCat character designs/model sheets that have shown up on the internet.
If you look closely at the Mumm-Ra model sheet (See attached link, top row middle), you can see the designers have drawn some pencil sketches of Mumm-Ra’s head without the helmet/headdress. They have drawn him somewhat younger looking here and with pointed cat ears similar to the ThunderCats character designs.
It occurred to me after seeing this, that maybe Mumm-Ra was actually a decrepit old ThunderCat who has used dark magic and the ancient spirits of evil to keep his decayed form alive. Similar to a Gollum type transformation from the effects of the One Ring on a Hobbit.
What do you guys think? Was Mumm-Ra once a cat?

Look at the new toys for the series. Mumm-ra has a weapon that looks like it’s the eye or something like it. Plus the eye looks like it can come out of the sword from the screen shots.
That’s exactly what I’ve thought ever since first seeing him on the wondercon trailer (and especially after I saw that same production sheet). you can briefly see he still has those ears in his mummy form in the wondercon trailer.

Maybe even a LONG time ago Mumm-ra made the sword of omens or was the first to have it.
I don’t like that idea at all. How could someone evil make the Sword of Omens?
Good point Balgus82. Thanks for the screen shot.
Other similarities: clawed hands and feet. He’s grey-skinned somewhat like Panthro, maybe he was a panther-type cat?
I kind of like the idea of Mumm-Ra having more of a tie to the TCats rather than just being a random Mummy-sorcerer. Especially since the TCats no longer crash on Third Earth, but now have a history of the Thunderian culture existing on Third Earth for generations.
He looks more like a bat to me. Wings, eats, and snub like nose.
I don’t think he was ever a ThunderCat.. not in the old series anyway.. In an interview, Leonard Starr said he just wrote him to be an evil, Boris Karloff-mummy “walking around” and I don’t think there are any hints of him being a ThunDerian or ThunderCat…
It wouldn’t surprise me if they did make him an ancient cat in the new show (seeing Lion-O and Tygra are now brothers, and ThunDera is on Third Earth and not a planet..), but I don’t think they did that…
I’m happy with him being the personification of ever-living, ever-lasting evil…
making him a TC would be to easy and to my taste too far from the source material..
Bandai’s website says he comes with the Sword of Plundar. That’s the same sword that Ratilla had in the original. If you look at the compact and fully extended versions, you’ll note it acts the same as the original… Compact has no blades, extended has 2 blades arcing in opposite directions that can act like a giant buzz saw if spun fast enough.
But like many things in this series, the Sword of Plundar has been tweaked a bit.
Sword of Plundarr hm? Well should be interesting to see how they got that one seeing there is no Thundera that blew up. Looking forward to all of these little questions being answered. Also maybe Mumm-ra was a cat, has anyone ever seen a Rex cat…?

THat not too far off from Mumm-ra…
I think you’re onto something there Clay Man Gumby.
I would suspect he was a mumified mutant and bat makes a lot of sense because look at his wings. His wings also look more bat like. If he had been a ThunderCat, he wouldn’t have wings.
Just wanna point out, he only has wings in his transformed form. so they come from the Ancient Spirits of Evil.
An assumption. Could be. Could also be that he was once a bat mutant.
I do hope the show reveals origins for his character.
How is that an assumption? I’m not assuming anything. We’ve seen him in his mummy form and he had no wings. Note the picture I included earlier in this thread.
I don’t think MumRa was a Thundercat, I think it’s more likely that he was once human and his form has been mutated by the Ancient Spirits of Evil.
The only thing I’ve seen so far about MumRa that has peaked my interest was a little comment in the geekweek article And you’ve got one truly nasty villain, none more than Mumm-Ra, who may have singlehandedly wiped out the human race because it just got in his way.

Not long till we find out for sure. I won’t be disappointed if MumRa was once a Thundercat. I just think of MumRa being an Ancient Egyptian that stumbled across the Ancient Spirits of Evil and thus fell into darkness.
An assumption because the show hasn’t started yet and so everything at this point is only hypothesis because as far as I am aware, the show’s creators have not revealed the origins of Mumm-Ra for any of us to know. There is not a definite explanation as to why the wings appear and disappear. It’s only educated guesses. I could think of theories as to why the wings appear as they do and still suggest he was a bat mutant if I wanted.
I think the main purpose of the wings is to make him more menacing. I don’t remember him having them in the os.
MumRa had his tattered cloak for wings in the OS. I guess the wings are to make MumRa in his ever living form more meancing and as a means for him to travel quickly from place to place when not using magic/technology.
As for his appearance ? He could be a bat mutant or he could just be somebody (Human, Thundercat, frog) that gained powers from the Ancient Spritis of Evil, but those powers may have mutated his body
into something that is not fully recogniseable as being Human, Thundercat or something else we haven’t thought of yet.
Speculation is fun, but I try not to make too many assumptions as it often leads me to disappointment. Something I learned in Harry Potter and Doctor Who fandom.
I hope MumRa’s origin gets explained properly, though a little bit at a time.
I like the idea… As far as I remember I don’t think it would contradict information given in the first series either. Didn’t Mumm-Ra say that he already knew about the Sword of Omens when they first landed on Third Earth?
Here’s my speculation -
Okay, so there were hints in the old series that Third Earth is actually our Earth, far in the future. Let’s pretend that maybe Mumm-Ra existed in present day, and somehow survives (may be responsible for) a huge nuclear war, which wipes out most of humanity and the world as we know it. Or perhaps he was the first generation born post-apocalypse from a small remnant of survivors, but is terribly disfigured - and experienced first-hand the power of technology and what it’s power brings.
Fast-forward many thousands of years, where mutations have altered the creatures that we know in our day into the humanoid animal creatures in the show. Perhaps Mumm-Ra was the only person who experienced tech at it’s prime (or shortly after) and knows it’s potential, and tries to harness it and use it as a method of control over the lesser creatures.
I would personally prefer that idea over Mumm-Ra simply being a Thundercat - this would tie Mumm-Ra to the origin of the Thundercats and all of the creatures of Third Earth, which would explain his desire for technology as he is aware of the power it has.
Where he gets involved with the Ancient Spirits of Evil, I won’t even guess.
ya know what… I’m watching the episode “The Last Day” and when they show a globe of Third Earth on the screen in Cat’s Lair about to blow up, the land masses are like our Earth’s.
