Last, but certainly not least, is a look at the revamped Thundercats logo. The artwork which stood beside the logo matched the one released earlier this week in conjunction with the announcement of a new Thundercats animated series. However, according to an insider attending the Expo, the Warner Bros representatives around this display were not promoting the cartoon, but a live action film instead! Though the 2011 date on the poster is more than likely an allusion to the animated series, with the studio already looking for marketing opportunities a live-action film must already be in the works.
So we might be having a new series and a movie coming out the same time!! I think i am gonna burst into tears!.. though i don’t think this is very likely to happen…
Day by day new infos are leaking and that is very good. 2011 is definetely the Cat’s year. Anytime soon i am expecting anouncements about a new Thundercats Video Game, comic book, merchandise-related items, the much anticipated OST, even a new DVD or better Blue-Ray release with many extras of the Classic series.
Over the past several months, fans of the hit cartoon series Thundercats have had plenty of news and speculation to chew on. First, a possible script for a live-action film was leaked online. This month, it was officially announced that a new ThunderCats animated series will re-introduced on the Cartoon Network sometime next year. Lastly, images and rumors from the Licensing International Expo currently underway in Las Vegas, Nevada, hint at the reality of a live-action treatment for the property. But is there any validity to this information?
CBM Scooper Clay was able to contact the Warner Bros Press Office yesterday in an effort to bring light to the recent rumors. He was able to find out that a ThunderCats film is in the process of being made into a motion picture but has not been officially ‘green lit’ by the studio. With this information I reached out to my source at Warner Bros, who happens to be working the floor of the Licensing Expo. Though he wishes to remain anonymous at this time, he did say,
“It all depends on how well the [animated] series is received. [The studio] is actively working on turning ThunderCats into a film, but it’s going to demand a gigantic budget for effects alone. But, yes, it is currently in the pipeline.”
When I asked if studio representatives are actually peddling the idea of a ThunderCats film at the Expo, he said,
“We’re slowly finding out exactly how marketable the property is as a stand-alone brand. First comes the series, then the movie. As long as it’s well received and worth the risk.”
There you have it, folks. If you’re waiting for the day a live-action, or Avatar-esque, ThunderCats movie hits theaters, you’d better show your support for it now more than ever.
I’m really really really really REALLY leery of a live action Thundercats. If the film would be done I’d much rather it be CGI, but instead of that crap they were trying to pass off as Lion-O, a more faithful rendition of him (3rd Earth and Mumm-Ra’s tomb were pretty cool however). Lets just wait on the series first to see if thats even worth while before we start talking about stomaching a Thundercats movie.
Also to add to this and to take a piece of what Lordore said above, I would absolutely do backflips if WB would commission Shout! Factory to release a DVD set for the original show. If one gets done (and I could possibly see this happening if it would ever go out of print by the time the new series kicked off) I’m almost positive WB would just keep it to themselves and take another crack at it. I reported in another thread where they do have a partnership for the series Max Headroom (and I believe one other show that I can’t recall) and that future license rights for Shout! Factory would be determined based on the success of those DVD shows. If you want the original show released in a worthy DVD set (remastered audio and video, loaded with extras, all in one box set, good price) you should start lobbying for them to grant Shout! Factory the rights to it now.
Yeah man i totally agree. i’d die for a decent Thundercats DVD set or even a Blue-Ray version.
Probably they will do that, around the same period when the New series is released.
Heh, I heard they were no longer looking to do a live action but going back to the CGI instead. This is getting confusing but as with most studios, it will depend on the animated series. The problem with that is that it’s on Cartoon Network, which means you HAVE to have cable to view it. This may limit the number of people who can tune in.
That’s certainly good news, but I think we’re going to have to wait at least two or three years before anything definitive gets announced. It’s always problematic whenever they just had the idea of making a movie based on a toy/cartoon/comic property… they have to find a studio that’s interested in producing the project, someone who writes a satisfying script, good actors, enough money to pay for good special effects… there’s a lot of factors to consider, and many times despite those efforts the movies tends to not getting the character/franchise very well… I mean, that they want to make a movie is fantastic news, I’d love to see one… but we can end up having something as incredibly good as “Batman Begins” or as disastrously bad as the horrid “Superman Returns”. You never know, there.
So, I rather wait one more year if they say they can do something better, rather than having the movie “right now”, if that meant that they’d be treating the property too lightly.
The movie got canned a while back. A script was circulating on the internet for a while but most places that had it stopped when WB asked them to. I don’t know if that script was real or made up though, so no point discussing what was in it.
Is much better as a fan to not know the details of the movie, so we get a good surprise about the new movie.
For me the new TMNT movie was great in details etc. The only thing was those villians that apperead in the movie instead of the ones of the original cartoon.
