Voice Cast: A Little Project

The voice cast has always been a topic of discussion for T-Cat fans as they’ve always tried to figure out who played who and all that stuff. But some of the voices are very hard to place. Larry Kenney for example is very hard to place among the actors, and aside from Alluro, I have next to no idea who else Doug Preis may have been.

However, I am embarking on a little project to go through all 130 episodes of Thundercats and try to at least guess who did the voice of every single character, big & small.

This is the basic list I’m starting out with:

Larry Kenney - Lion-O, Jackalman, Claudis, Tug-Mug, Ratar-O, Ratilla

Lynne Lipton - Cheetara, Wily Kit, Mandora, Willa, Nayda, Luna, Queen Luna, Mumm-Rana (1st Appearance)

Earle Hyman - Panthro, Red Eye, Cruncher, Ancient Spirits of Evil

Earl Hammond - Mumm-Ra, Jaga, Vultureman, Amok, Hammerhand, Snowman, Capt. Cracker, Turmagar, Pumm-Ra

Bob McFadden - Slithe, Snarf, Snarfer, Lynx-O, Top Spinner, Grune The Destroyer, Mongor, Capt. Shiner, Driller, Vultureman (1st Voice)

Peter Newman - Tygra, Wily Kat, Monkian, Ben-Gali, Hachiman, Ram Bam

Gerianne Raphael - Pumyra, Chilla, Jaguara, Mumm-Rana (Mumm-Rana’s Belt)

Doug Preis - Alluro

Most of the female voices are very easy to pinpoint with only two actresses (one of them not even showing up until Season 2), but others were very tough. It actually was not until I played the “Ultimate Thundercats” game on the Season 2 Part 2 DVD that I figured out Larry Kenney must have been Ratar-O because of the similarities to that voice & the voice he used for Mumm-Ra on the DVD. The similarities also lead me to believe that Kenney was Tug-Mug, although Earl Hammond is normally credited for that character.

Doug Preis is normally given credit for Lynx-O, but I feel the character sounds more like McFadden, and since I can’t place Preis anywhere else at the moment, I’ll lean towards McFadden playing Lynx-O.

And then of course there is the eternal problems of who played the Ro-Bear Berbils…that’s just impossible to determine I think. So if anybody knows something I don’t about the Berbils, please speak up.

So that’s the list I’m starting with now, so if anybody has any corrections or arguments, please say so now. I’d love to get as much input as possible before continuing.

Aye, McFadden is Lynx-O. It’s Preis that plays Alluro.

I know that Earle Hyman also voiced a snarf - in the episode where the Snarf-Planet is first introduced and Ratar-O captures Snarfer. Larry Kenney later on voiced a regular Snarf (Egbert, I think) in Season 2.

Hi, it’s a nice idea. Do you mind other people joining in? I’m also re-watching the episodes (starting from S2) at the moment, so I’ll add some I’m certain about as I go along:

The Mad Bubbler (Bob McFadden): This one’s an easy and obvious one. The character is a composite of Slithe and Lynx-o. He slips into both at different times.

Sure! Any help is good.

The ones that I am honest to God stumped on are:

Amok: Its either McFadden or Hammond, and I just can’t place it. I’ve already said before, but out of the main cast of characters (T-Cats, Mumm-Ra, Mutants, Lunatacs) he’s by far the toughest to identify.

Ro-Bear Berbils: I initially gave all the Berbils to McFadden, which was entirely a guess. BUT, at the very beginning of Lord of the Snows, a Ro-Bear Berbil trips and makes a noise that sounds like Earl Hammond. Now whether or not Hammond was a regular voice for the Berbils and they just forgot to enhance the recording or if this was just a one time thing, I have no idea.

Crownan: I gave Crownan to Larry Kenney only because Kenney was the voice of the stork in the Vlasic Pickle commercials, and that voice was done with a Groucho Marx impression (a good one I might add) However, that’s not a 100% certain as part of me thinks it may have been McFadden, and another part of me thinks it might even be Doug Preis (listen to the line in Circus Train where Crownan pretends to be Merna)

Amok is that big slug fella. That isn’t Earle - Earle did the Ancient Spirits of Evil, Panthro, a Snarf and Red Eye. I think they didn’t give him too much simply because his voice was so recognisable and he couldn’t really change it up. He’s known for that dark, booming voice.

LOL! I was just watching Mumm-Rana’s Belt which is probably where Amok talks the most to try and figure out the voice, and now I think it might be Larry Kenney!

Its crazy, but I just can not pinpoint Amok’s voice at all!

Notes:

  • Now I credited all Ro-Bear Berbils (except Ro-Bear Belle, and even that might be wrong) to Earl Hammond because in the episode Lord of the Snows, they show one tripping and making a noise, and its voice wasn’t enhanced and it was clearly Earl Hammond. With NOTHING else to go on and the fact that all Berbils sound the same, I just gave them all to Hammond.

  • With Amok, I just gave up and credited him to Kenney because the only hint I could get was in “Mumm-Rana’s Belt” when he grunts & growls, he sounds a little bit like Lion-O’s growl.

  • And Crownan I gave to Doug Preis. In my research, I found out it was Doug Preis who did the Vlasic Pickle commercials with the stork that sounds like Groucho Marx, so there you go.

  • In “Slaves of Castle Plun-Darr”, The Brutemen appear to be voiced by at least a few of the male actors.

Mumm-Ra’s Disguises! Throughout the series, Mumm-Ra took on many forms to trick the Thundercats. Some of these disguises were not introduced as real characters (Gregory Gregian, The Neitherwitch) and on a few occasions, Mumm-Ra diguised Ma-Mutt. So here is the voice cast for all the sneaky disguises that Mumm-Ra took on over the course of the show. Its interesting, but in a way, the entire cast (minus Doug Preis) voiced Mumm-Ra at one point or another.

I didn’t know he played the Vlasic Pickle Stork. I thought he did Count Chocula and Sonny the Cocoa Puffs Bird. I think McFadden might have played Bragg; I just read a piece online that had a list of all these celebrity impersonations he did and W.C. Fields was was one of them – which is of course who Bragg sounds like. I think he might have played Crownan, too – it showed the genius he had in switching between two different characters at lightning speed.
