Its probably way too soon to do this, what with us only having 11 episodes of the new series so far, but what they hey, I thought it’d be cool to talk about our favorites.
5) Berbils = Sue me, I loved this episode. First of all, I have to really respect the creators of this show as reintroducing the Berbils has got to be the riskiest move they’ve done so far. That’s one part of T-Cats mythology that could have been ignored entirely, and they not only presented it, but somehow made them even cuter than they were back in the 80s. In the end, I thought the episode was a lot of fun with great humor, a fun new villain in the Conquedor, & some nostalgia as well as this episode felt more like the original series than any of the others so far.
4) Omens Part II: Ancient Spirits of Evil = The 2nd half of the premiere really delivered in spades and showed us what the new show was going to be all about with fantastic action sequences, & a more emotional & intense story. Claudis’ death, though expected, was a sad moment, and it was great to see Slythe, Grune, & of course Mumm-Ra all strutting their stuff. And of course we got all the great references to the original series. I totally flipped out since the “Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, THUNDERCATS HOOOO!” bit again. It was a nostalgic wave of fun that showed off the potential this new show had.
3) Journey to the Tower of Omens = Honestly, this episode almost felt like a Season finale. We got to see the Cats endure an Indiana Jones-esque adventure as they survived the various traps on their way to the Tower. Also, we got to see them work together as a team to take on Mumm-Ra in the first major battle with their lead foe. This was the first episode where we got to see the Cats function as a well in sync team as everyone contributed to accomplish their goals. It was just pure action & awesomeness from start to finish & I loved it.
2) Old Friends = Panthro’s first full episode in the series and it was nice to get some clarification on what had happened to Pantrho, and it adds a very personal element to future events. Grune & Panthro are going to have to face off again, and we got a small preview of it here. I also liked the idea of Panthro not fitting in with the group right away and butting heads with Lion-O, with the young Lord earning his respect by the end. And of course, it was nice to see The Driller, ha ha.
1) Song of the Petalars = This one really caught me off guard. I have to admit that I was really worried about this one when I saw the preview clips, but it delivered an emotional story I wasn’t expecting. Truthfully, I had just suffered a big loss in my family just a month before I saw this episode, so it hit me deep. To see Lion-O & Emrick’s friendship grow the entire course of a lifetime only in the span of a day was unique, and again, the message of making the most out of life & those that leave us too soon can still leave a major impact on us meant a lot to me. So I really appreciated this episode and what they were able to accomplish. I also have to say how much I loved Slythe in this episode. This is the ruthless Slythe we only got glimpses of in the original show before he was watered down, and I was glad to see him shown in this light. I also liked having different lizards with different abilities as they made them seem like more of a match for the Cats. And finally, Panthro’s debut moment & him tearing through the Lizards on the Thundertank was my biggest “THAT WAS AWESOME!” nostalgia moment that the show has given us so far. I loved it.
