For those who grew up with the original tv show you might be surprised (for better or worse) that Tim Burton decided to take on the cult classic 70’s Horror soap opera. But I have a feeling it won’t be something you’d expect to see.

But for those who have questions, I do have some sort of answer.
I saw the trailer, and quite honestly, I don’t know how to react. I never saw the original show, although I know it’s very popular, and lots of modern shows about vampires including Buffy and even Twilight have taken various cues from it. There was a short-lived attempt to make new version of the show over a decade ago, but I also know this is very far from the serious tone of the original, and I also know something like this is no doubt going to upset long-term fans. But since I’ve never been all that familiar with the show, I’m more open to a re-interpretation of it, and probably wouldn’t be as judgmental. It certainly looks worth my time at the very least.
Incidentally, they’re releasing an entire series collection on DVD on April 10 in case anyone’s interested.
No doubt that DVD is released to cash in on the movie. Anyway, if you’re curious about to tone of the trailer. What happened is that Burton liked the show growing up, upon revisiting though; he found out it was more campy he remembered. So it seems like to me, he’s trying to make a Horror-Comedy.
As for the setting, he admits that Dracula 1972 AD is one of his favorite films so, yeah.
I watched most of the original on reruns back in the late 90’s/early 00’s.
I could handle most of this direction, I think, but Barnabus out and about during the daytime? Seems too much like a Frankenstein of Addams Family, Munsters, Buffy, and a pinch of Dark Shadows.
Why do people have to keep reinventing the wheel? Modify the wheel is ok, but total reinvention is neither needed nor beatifically. Fail, this movie will.
I remember watching a few episodes of the original and it was scary…The Soundtrack was one of the scariest I’ve hear, it gave you goosebumps. I cannot see, why Tim Burton would make the movie as stated in the trailer. Barnabus there is way too much like Willy Wonka, not only because Johnny Depp plays them both.
I watched the original a bit. Loved the remake they did in the late 80s/early 90s with Ben Cross as Barnabus. But more than that, my mom is a super die-hard Dark Shadows fan. She has a bookshelf filled with the books that the original show is based on, if that tells you anything. She loved both takes on the show too. So I asked her what she thought about all this, and being the long-time fan that she is, she said it looked like fun and that she can’t wait to see it.
So there you go. One big-time fan thinks it’s alright and isn’t mad in the least. If she does end up disliking the movie, I’m sure it’ll be because it’s a bad movie and not because it spits all over the books or the original show (assuming it’s a bad movie).
I am keeping an open mind will probably go see it
