I must admit I love the redesigned artwork - however, it’s a shame that there aren’t any more special features than on the original sets, the only thing that would have persuaded me to buy these over again, as I already have the complete series on both the Region 1 (US) and Region 2 (UK) DVD!
From the look of it, they are taking the original DVD sets and breaking them up. From 4 box sets with 3 DVD cases containing 2 disks each (24 disks) to 12 DVD cases containing 2 disks each (24 disks).
The cover art looks exactly like one of the DVD cases, but replacing solid black background with additional watermarked background. Heck, the box sets were about $60.00 each when they first came out, 60/3 = $20 per 2 disk DVD case.
Not bad for fans who were unable to acquire the boxed sets previously. Could be a good move to draw attention to both series. But for those of us who have the boxed sets, I do not see any reason to get these.
I’d have definately bought the first volume, if it contained the uncut/unedited version of Exodus and The Unholy Alliance I often wonder if WB do have it, but just cannot be bothered to look in their archives for it. That would be the only incentive for me to buy it.
Same here. But since there appears to be no plans to release the movie version on DVD or Blu Ray, I had to take matters into my own hands and copy my official FHE VHS tape onto a DVD. At least now if/when I am no longer able to watch the VHS tape, I have my own personal backup of it.
Great so the Cats are getting the same treatment as current Cartoon Networks shows. Instead of getting DVD sets with decent extras and 26 episodes, we’re getting over priced discs with 12 episodes and not much extras. Yay.
When I saw this on the front page I was like, I don’t care if I already have the complete series from the first release. The artwork looks great! And a re-release probably means MORE extra features. But no.
aero, on second thought you are absolutely right, i don’t see why a fan who has already purchased the old DVDs should be tempted to purchase the new dvds as well.
The re-release is mainly aimed for fans who are now being introduced to the Thundercats world,this is why the release will be on July,around the time when the New Series is coming out.
I did think about this last night and did think of a few things. The only reason a fan with the boxed sets would want these are either 1. to have a spare copy. 2. to support the ThunderCat franchise.
The price is not a great deal, but it isn’t a rip-off either. Dollar for dollar, the 2-disk release price should be about the same as the 6-disk boxed set when you look at the total cost for the series.
More importantly, does this mean WB is really interested in both series? The “classic” line is getting new action figures and a re-release of the series on DVD. And that is in addition to 2 statue lines, a static action figure line, and a statue-sized action figure. Maybe WB does have a long-term plan that involves both the new and the original series.
They’re probably just re-releasing it with the new show to get adults who watch the new show with their kids (who aren’t the super-fans like us who already have them) and start thinking “I remember this when a kid, but It doesn’t come on TV anymore. I want to see the old version!”
Or maybe they’ll just have both the 2 disc versions AND the boxed sets (like Avatar: TLAB) to get people who would be more likely to get the smaller sets over time rather than one big boxed set.
Unfortunatelly, the unedited/uncut episodes of Exodus and The Unholly Alliance were only released on VHS back in the days…The movie version of Exodus also features the ‘lost intro’ which was never a part of the DVD releases. Now you can find them on You tube.
