I’ve been doing a lot of reading and researching about MOTU (He-Man & She-Ra) story tapes lately - i.e., the cassette tapes of stories that were released back in the 1980s, both alone as cassette tapes and as part of book-and-cassette packs (“read-along” book type stuff). I was wondering whether anybody here has any info about what was released in the way of ThunderCats story tapes?
I personally own the following story tapes, all released in the UK, and all coming packaged with books:
“Exodus”
“The Mutants’ Alliance” (renamed adaptation of “The Unholy Alliance” TV episode)
“The Evil Chaser”
“The Invisible Castle” (renamed adaptation of “The Astral Prison” TV episode)
As you can see, these are all adaptations of TV episodes - were there any ThunderCat stories released on audio cassette (or even on vinyl!) back in the day that were not adapted from TV episodes? And, if they were all adapted from the show, does anyone know which episodes they adapted? If anybody has any info about this, I’d find it fascinating reading - many thanks in advance for your help!

I had one of them, the I think it was “The Evil Chaser”. The downside was when I moved from the West Coast of the U.S. the East Coast the tape
was damaged along with many of my action figures. I think I have the book
still packed away some where.
All the ones I remember seeing were adaptations of TV episodes, there
were more that I wanted, but my parents were strict when it came to
buying stuff for my Brother and I.
I never even knew any Thundercats story tapes existed until now! Are they similar to the He-Man tapes with a narrator telling the story and putting on voices for the characters? Or do they actually the voice actors from the cartoon and take the clips from there?

Of the four tapes I own, two are with a narrator doing the voices (although with a female voice actor doing the female characters) and two are with actual dialogue from the cartoon, with the cartoon voice cast! I’m still trying to figure out whether the voices are taken straight from the cartoon episodes or whether the VAs went into the studio especially to record them for the audio cassettes…

Yeah, I’m aware of a good few ThunderCats book-and-tape packs - you can see a couple of them (including the rarish Marks & Spencer exclusive one that I own, “The Invisible Castle”) on this page:
The only one of mine that’s not original is “Exodus”, which someone copied for me a few years back - all the others are original UK audio tapes! Sadly, the one for “The Invisible Castle” is pretty knackered and won’t play properly anymore!
Glad you enjoyed it, Neil - the findings so far indicate that all TCat story tapes were released with books and all were adaptations of TV episodes!
I had a tape of two episodes retold in story format: “Secret Of The Ice King” and “The Evil Harp Of Char-Nin”. They were told by some bloke doing - or trying to do - the voices for all the characters. I couldn’t say who it was. Bizarrely, I had this tape long before I saw either episode. So when those two episodes did eventually air here in England, I knew what was going to happen in them already!
