Due to some overwhelmingly negative and depressing rumors and threads on this forum, I wanted to make a thread for straightforward discussion. This thread is NOT about the continuation/cancellation of the series/toyline/anything. It is just a pure creative thread.
Alright, now that that’s cleared up, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about how a more mature ThunderCats could be a really cool thing, and they could do so by putting it on Toonami. Now, I highly, HIGHLY doubt this will happen, but it seems like it could be a cool possibility. What are your thoughts? Do you think the show would be better with darker themes?
I think, even for a kids show, it is already pretty dark. Considering the death of several characters have not been covered up like in other cartoons, and the very deep storyline. But I’d love to hear what others think about it, so share!
I would be all for it. I’ve been a big fan of the darker aspects of the NS. There’s enough foundation in the current 6-11 oriented series to go way deep down the rabbit hole and take it to a whole other level.
If I had it my way, this series would be as graphic as Ninja Scroll and as dark as Golgo 13. And have the mecha combat of Mobile Suit Gundam or Macross.
In some aspects the NS already is, ie monkian and jackalman being cannibalistic murderers compared to their goofy OS counterparts, and I am really loving those changes. A whole show in a more mature theme would be amazing. We’d need 40 minute episodes too.
I would like the story to be darker and there to be more consequences for bad actions. I would also like a long continued story without fillers (maybe one or two at most) or at least fillers that don’t break up the momentum of the story and without them being afraid to have a slow episode without any action for character development (like Anime usually does). But I don’t think it needs anything like hard core violence, gore, sex or cursing. Something like Fullmetal Alchemist would be ideal for me. It’s a dark serious show, but still has light moments and great action. Or maybe Escaflowne.
This was already done with the WildStorm comics and from what I have seen the majority of the fan base disliked it. Obviously a cartoon series would be different however it could potentially split the fan base as most people grew up on the OS Thundercats and even as adults just can’t see Lion-O thrusting the SoO through the chest of a Jackalman.
I honestly believe a much better NS could be done that would not require that amount of violence in order to be good. You could have Lion-O slaying everything in sight and it would eventually get boring after a while. You need good stories, and the NS is lacking in that dept.
Really? I think the stories in the NS are far superior to many other cartoons, including the OS. We’re not talking unnecessary amounts of blood and gore, just like a little more graphic action scenes and maybe some blood here and there, plus darker stories.
There are a few good episodes here and there (if being really critical), but I think the stories could be improved for NS. Still, the NS is quite entertaining and has its own charm in the way it is presented. But I would love me some darker Thundercats that are aimed at adults :D. It’d just make for an interesting story because then the writers would have more room to flex their literary muscle.
Petalers and Duelist are two very well written episodes, and touched on what made the OS such a great series, (90% of the episodes were stand alone and introduced us to new characters, surroundings, elements, teachings, etc…).
Aside from those two episodes the NS is a muddled mess as far as the storyline goes IMO. (I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 5 or 6 episodes minus The Forever Bag of the NS however)

Back on topic I enjoyed the WS comics so I would be open to a more mature Thundercats.
I think a switch to Toonami would be great. I wouldn’t like to see it get TOO dark or TOO mature, because I think they have a good balance already. But the addition of a lot more action (without having to be too graphic) and lessening of the goofy aspects (ie Pumyras big head and the Looney Tunes eyes in the last ep!!! Grr!!) would be awesome, and would satisfy those of us who want more action and more seriousness, but still be accessible to younger viewers and those who like it as it is.
I wouldn’t want it to become TOO matue as it would lose it’s charm . and we got plenty of shows nowdays that are all full of violence , sex and swearing . and I don’t want this show’s atmosphere to get ruined by that… but if they could use that freedom in a good way then I’m not against the idea .
Anyway , I don’t know if anyone mentiond it yet but Dan Norton worked on a show called GI joe : resolute , that had a similar artstyle and was aired at adult swim .
Yeah, I saw that show. It was decent. I never really caught on, though.
One thing I can’t get out of my mind is envisioning Panthro throwing out a curse word randomly. I always think I’m going to hear one when something bad happens!
