Jan9 for uk region 2 dvd vol 1
Cool! Thanks so much for posting this news. I just checked out amazon.co.uk and the listing is indeed there.
Here’s the link so folks don’t have to search for it:
It’s showing a running time of 733 minutes, which would perhaps indicate it does indeed contain the same amount of episodes as the USA region 1 release, though the USA release ran for 759 minutes so perhaps our UK release will not include the fan documentary with Wil Wheaton? Did that thing run for 16 minutes?
However what baffles me is the price point! Come on £19.49 for 33 episodes! That’s a lot cheaper than what these sets sold for in America and DVD sets are usually more expensive.
For that price I’d only expect about 17-18 episodes. Perhaps amazon got it wrong with the running time?
Still I’m really excited about this news and can’t wait to pick it up since I held out on the Season One region 1 sets. I did pick up S2V1 though and was set to get S2V2 as well. Now I’m not sure what to do?
I might probably go ahead and buy S2V2 has there is no guarantees we will get both seasons on DVD over. I guess it will depend on how the first sets sells. What the heck! lol I guess it’s now that big a deal to have Season Two on Region 1 and 2 DVD so I probably will buy S2V2 at the end of this month anyway. It’s gonna take ages anyway to get to Season 2 here in the UK, even if it is released!
I’m really hoping that WB UK have the original PAL masters and we avoid all the hassles the guys in the USA have had with their releases. Especially the trouble with Exodus screwing up and all.
But could this be to get the UK up to speed in preparation for the brand new series which will likely hit the UK early 2008? Guess we will have to wait and see!
EDIT: Just noticed that the date is 9th January. I know what I want for my birthday! lol
Chris here…
This is incredible news!! Or at least, it would be if I hadn’t already purchased the Region 1 set, LOL!
However, I will still pick this up, to support the series and (most importantly) to get the episodes in PAL quality! ![]()
Take care… ![]()
Glad I held off on the season 1 sets! Though I might end up having to buy the region 1 S1V2 set still if the region 2 S1V1 set does not sell enough.
So anyone reading this, make sure you buy the region 2 set on 9th January!! lol
Chris here…
I have to say, I’m still not sorry I picked up the R1 sets, as not only might these episodes have never been released in R2, but I’ve also had 12 - 18 months extra use out of the R1 DVDs! ![]()
I have two copies of TCats season 1 on VHS, my original recordings from 1988 - 1991, and a spare “backup” copy of those that I ran off for myself some years ago - I’ve watched that copy to try and preserve the condition of my originals. If the whole of season 1 comes out on R2 DVD, I shall keep my original recordings but probably throw away the “backups”, as I shall have two sets of TCats season 1 on official DVD! ![]()
Take care… ![]()
We’ve also got to bear in mind that PAL runs faster than NTSC, which will be a reason for the time difference.
Atleast we’ll have them in better quality than the Region 1 releases!
The featurette ran for seven minutes…too long in regards to Wil Wheaton’s ill-conceived appearance in it. Or – P.S. More true fans, less Wil Wheaton. Signed: Thundercats fans, 2005.
I’m not sure about that has I have some episodes on VHS in both PAL and NTSC and they both have the same running time of about 22 minutes. Though you have now got me wondering so I might do a comparison check as my brother has an old portible TV that I could set up side by side with my TV.
I think this will almost certainly be a bare bones release with just the first 33 episodes. 733 minutes divided by 33 = 22 mins, 21 seconds per ep (which sounds about right for each episode) I think I speak for most UK fans when I say we won’t miss Wil Wheaton appreance lol
Oh and an update about the UK DVD set: It seems Amazon.co.uk have updated their listing page and amended the release date to the 15th January 2007. I already amended the front page of the site with this correction.
I’d actually already noticed a flaw in the 9th January release date while I was thinking about it in bed last night. The 9th of January is a tuesday and as a rule all new releases come out on a monday. So I had a feeling that the 9th was incorrect. 15th January is indeed a monday so that date makes much more sense.
Bring it on!
HMV also now have this up for pre-order on their website for just £15.99 (the price gets crazier!) and they are also claiming that the 6-disc boxset is an ‘exclusive’ to them!
Not exactly sure what’s going on here as Amazon.co.uk have also had it up for pre-order for over a week now! I can only guess the HMV version may have something extra inside the set that the version sold at Amazon.co.uk doesn’t have?
However it’s the price that has me baffled still. 33 episodes for £15.99? That price is way too low so surely there has to be a catch somewhere? ![]()
A HMV exclusive box set sounds more likely to me, Warner released Batman: The Animated Series as a HMV exclusive set too, although at the more pricey…price of £30.
An update on the set can be found on the home page: www.thundercatslair.org
Chris here…
That’s amazing news - even though I already own the US set I shall have to buy this to get the episodes in PAL! ![]()
Plus, just to add to what my esteemed colleague Neil says about these episodes being uncut in the UK for the first time, this is very true - for a large proportion (I would go so far as to say the majority) of ThunderCats episodes, the fade-out between the end of act 2 and the start of act 3 (the epilogue segment) would be cut for the BBC broadcasts, and several episodes from the latter end of season 1 (mostly not episodes featured on this set) were the victims of cut scenes involving Panthro’s martial arts action! ![]()
This is exciting news for us UK ThunderFans, even for those of us like me who already own the US versions! ![]()
Take care… ![]()
