Wasn’t sure where to put this, but I figured this thread was the most appropriate. Just read an article on IGN about why the Green Lantern series ended. Apparently, as with ThunderCats, it was tied to the success or failure of a toy line. Here’s a link to the article below…
Kind of sad that CN determines the success or failure of a show based soley on how well its toyline does. If I recall, that’s also the reason why Sym-Bionic Titan was cancelled. Kind of an archaic and a$$-backwards way of judging a show’s success if you ask me.
Apparently, Nickelodeon doesn’t do it that way with their shows. Otherwise, shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Kung-Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness wouldn’t have made it past their first seasons, as there were little to no toy merchandise for either show.
CN really needs a shake-up in their management. Seeing has how John Riccitiello just resigned as CEO of EA, we can hope something similar will happen at CN one day.
Sadly that is how shows primarily aimed at children work.
But in the case of Green Lantern, it was too soon after the movie as all the shops still had lots of the movie based toys. To the people deciding which products to order in Green Lantern is Green Lantern and if one isn’t selling it’s doubtful the other will.
Although much like Thundercats, the Green Lantern movie had a terrible toy line.
This is what upsets me. I have yet to see a Regular Show toyline. I’ve never seen anyone wear a T-shirt or anything from it. The show also does not focus a whole lot on be aimed at kids besides being mindless annoying “humor” like so many of their other “comedy” shows. So why would a show like Young Justice be cancelled? It garnered some pretty impressive ratings for absolutely no advertisement and has/had a large fanbase. If Cartoon Network seriously ONLY looks at the toys as the success for their shows, then why do some shows get to slip past this requirement while others end because of it?
In the case of Green Lantern and Young Justice both are DC properties, and as we all know DC give all their mass market toy licences to Mattel.
Although the only Animated Green Lantern toys I have seen are McDonalds toys, I have heard the Mattel Young Justice figures had terrible distribution issues.
I think DC should let DC Direct handle all their toys as they are superior to what Mattel release.
