ThunderCats Episode 26 "What Lies Above (part 2)" OFFICIAL TALKBACK THREAD!

Again, I see your point. And as a general rule, I’m not against character development. That would be silly. I only detect a hint of preferential treatment. Generally preference is given to the protagonist because… well… he’s the protagonist. If a character rival to the protagonist gets preference the show begins to feel a bit unbalanced and it might be better to just switch protagonists. Part of the problem is that while we have seen Lion-O face up to his mistakes and flaws (which is a key part of his heroic develpment don’t misunderstand me), we have yet to see Tygra get called out for his arrogance. At least as far as I remember. The episode where Lion-O died came close, but it wasn’t really a true comeuppance, rather a bit of a wasted opportunity. If that mini-arc had been expanded we could have seen Lion-O’s trials and ALSO seen Tygra having to eat his words about claiming to be a better leader than Lion-O was. Ironically, giving more time to Lion-O’s development prevented that from being fully fleshed out. The bit with Tygra having to step in for Lion-O was kinda there, but more should have been made of it.

I agree. Although it was heavily implied, an apology from Tygra would have been nice to see.

Also, this is a bit of a tangent. But the fact that Tygra was able to magically fly airships kinda highlighted how the writers wrote themselves into a corner in the beginning by saying that the Thunderans were ignorant of technology. His ancestors were pilots so he has magical piloting skills? That’s stretching the SoD a bit thin.

They wouldn’t necessarily have to wait over a decade. While looking for Eldara, the twins could stumble upon the Cave of Time (who remembers that OS episode?) and age to their mid or late teens. If the show really gets more seasons, that’s a trick the writers could use if they decide to make the series darker or a little more mature – and not necessarily to find Lion-O a new love interest!

I think it would be an interesting take on the twins. Similar to what happened in the ReBoot series (this one I doubt many will remember) when Enzo and AndrAIa aged quicker than the rest of the characters. I liked them much more after that, they stole that whole season. I loved that show.

Ooh, I remember that episode! But still, NO. NO to Wilyon-O!! I’d sooner he paired up with Willa or Nayda (Or BOTH!) than see this ship set sail! Plus, I still feel that Pumyra’s corruption is the NS’s answer to WilyKat’s (voluntary) corruption in the comics, only more vamped up. Cos after all, Michael Jelenic (Was it?) did say they wanted a “cinematic, darker story.” And where do they get elements for it? The comics!

LOL!! I actually prefer Lion-O as a loner from now on, having yet another love interest is too much of a distraction from his mission. But I’d still like to see the twins all grown up, even if only temporarily. They can always find that fountain of youth later.

I remember the WS comics vaguely… Didn’t liked them back then. I’ll have to search online to re-read those sometime.

And then they put in a writer who hates Tygra for the Trials 2 episode lol..

It was not magical piloting skills but a strong inherent talent to fly. Still, don’t see the connection between tigers and flying and I put the odds that he could actually beat out vultureman in the race AND be a better war pilot at about the same of teaching a kid the rules of chess and immediately making him play and beat a grandmaster.

BUT, the writers made me laugh here by making the contest flying through hoops, that is a total popculture reference to Starfox - while I haven’t actually played the game it became a bit of a meme a while back, to the point even Google put it in their search engine, if you type “do a barrel roll” your screen will flip around.

Agreed on the loner part, especially not wilykit, but still it’d be nice if they didn’t make him seem like a real loser in that department like they have now. Could be something as simple as introducing a female thundercat that is around for 2 episodes who has a big crush on him, but he’s the one that is not interested (or oblivious to it). I know they are trying to make go through hardships to come out stronger and a worthy leader but it’s a bit much the way this all played out.

But he’s a king. No love interest = no wife = no queen = no heir. That’s kind of a bad thing.

Yes, he does need offspring to pass the rule to. I haven’t given up hope on Pumyra redeeming herself or another cat coming into play.

You know, now that I think about it, I think all of the issues and rage and whatever about the “twists” in this show result from the fact that even ignoring the writers’ preference of Tygra over Lion-O, they don’t seem to do foreshadowing very well. Cheetara choosing Tygra was irritating not only because it disappointed some, but because it was VERY poorly foreshadowed. Likewise, Pumyra’s betrayal is upsetting not only because it screws Lion-O (again) but because it was also poorly foreshadowed.

Actually, the Pumyra thing was foreshadowed pretty well. I thought the same at first, but I recommend you rewatch some previous episodes with her in it. You’ll notice a few things you didn’t notice before.

Also, I think the Tygra choosing Cheetara thing wasn’t foreshadowed much on purpose, so it would be a surprise. But with the Pumyra thing, they did foreshadow it, but in a way that would not spoil the ending.

Quite the opposite. Her behavior prior to the betrayal suddenly makes perfect sense if you know what she had been hiding, that is was actually was set up quite well along with noone seeing it coming.

Are you sure the foreshadowing is really there? It’s entirely possible that you’re just reinterpreting all of her actions now that you know she’s evil. In effect, mentally “inserting” foreshadowing where there isn’t any. The human mind does love to play tricks.

And I don’t think “surprise” is a valid excuse for the Tygra/Cheetara thing. There’s a difference between a plot twist and outright deceiving the audience. And deceiving the audience is a big no-no.

No, it’s pretty obvious at some points. For example, when she’s talking about the cats that died in the fall of Thundera due to Lion-O abandoning them, she was talking about herself. That’s why she got so emotional over it. She also (I just noticed this today) seemed to know where the Sword of Plundarr was even though she was sold to the pit before she could become a slave and even learn of its existence. In part one of the finale, she says “I serve my king AND master”, implying she was serving Mumm-Ra too. There are a few others, but those just came to mind first.
Merged Post:

I don’t know about you, but I really didn’t feel deceived at all. In Magi Oar, Tygra showed feelings for Cheetara, and their past was explained in the following episode. Sure, she somewhat hung on Lion-O during that episode, but it was because Tygra seemed to be really troubled. When it came down to it, I was surprised, but I in no way felt deceived because the signs were there.

I doubt it although I have a short story idea where Lion-O is sitting by himself waiting for Tygra to say something snarky. :sneaky:

The way I would actually like to see the writers handle this would be for Tygra to console and encourage Lion-O, like an older brother should. It’s high time they buried the hatchet. If Tygra can’t swallow his pride and support his brother when he’s experiencing abject depression, he’ll have lost all likability.

I would love to see Tygra support Lion-O, although I’m not sure he knows how to do so…

Well, I’d be satisfied with a genuine effort.

Pumyra isnt completely consumed by her hate. We clearly see signs that she is conflicted. This is evident in her bipolar behavior in the show. I think the real Pumyra would have forgiven LionO, but sadly, this reincarnated Pumyra is being manipulated by Mummra, who keeps feeding her with hatred. So just when we see signs of clarity in her..bam she goes back to pushing Lion o away.

The creators of the show are clearly looking at Star Wars as a template for the series. If there is a season 2 Pumyra will definitely play the role of a Darth Vader, who in the end will betray her master Mummra and join Lion O. The question is will Pumyra pay the ultimate price to save the one she loves? Or since this is a kids show, will they bring her back to life and reunite her with Lion o as an official member of the Thundercts clan?

Didn’t you just post this in the Pumyra thread?
