ThunderCats are back ...in parody form!

Exactly this is just a similar situation to Rian Johnson’s Star Wars The Last Jedi.

No one said he wasn’t talented or not a nice person.
But regardless of his skills as an animator those character designs are hideous.
Why could they not have had nice designs with some vague semblance to normal proportions? They just look very lazy and uninspired.
But then if this was done in a rush over a last minute weekend (?) maybe that would explain the awful rushed looking designs.

He is obviously talented. Whoever judges him by only looking at TCG should look more and find that he can actually draw well. The problem here is that this parody would be warmly welcomed by parents (let’s face it, people in their mid 30s-40s are having children and control what they watch) …only if it was a spin-off instead of being the only current ThunderCats series.

Don’t ignore the fact that kids usually idolise their parents and whenever their views are negative, children will normally agree.

@bollo_whip_it - Maybe I missed it, but you seem to know more about the production than others, would you mind telling us how you know these things? Are you part of the TCR team? Do you know people from the TCR team personally?

Apart from the hideous style, this is my biggest problem with this show. If they insists on the Cal-Art style and making it a “comedy”; why ThunderCats? Why not create something new, new characters, a new world. Because it takes too long? Because they are lazy? Because they just dont have the talent?
Like I said before, TCR is so far removed from the source material, in both form and style, as well as intention, that it might as well be something else, matter of fact, it SHOULD be something else. ThunderCats is an established property, with a vast mythology, superbly defined characters and very thoughtful and mature stories. The people behind ThunderCats Roar havent done any of the heavy lifting, in creating these characters and building this universe; they just took the ThunderCats, dumbed it down and forced it in this lazy, unremarkable, unoriginal and bland mold.

I’m absolutely appalled at the sight of this. An affront to all fans of this magnificent 80’s cartoon.

How would YOU know? or are you just making things up? Are you one of the people who work on the show? If so that makes your opinion highly suspicious. What are you planning on doing next? Calling everyone who doesn’t like it haters and man children who are upset that their childhood is being ruined?
Then what are you going to say about a person like me who is a current next fan of the series for only two years? Am I a hater and man child too who doens’t want her childhood destroyed? I never watched the show as a kid. So my childhood is intact. You going to ignore the feelings of a new fan? One who thinks the current idea is utter garbage?
The people behind this show are spitting in the faces of the guys who created the series. Or is it okay to make fun of their work because they’re dead?

You don’t seem to understand the problem with this at all and are acting like nobody’s opinion matters. I see you’re a new member here which makes everything you’re saying even more suspicious.

Just came back from a friend’s 7 year old son birthday party and I tried an experiment. None of the children ever watched anything related to ThunderCats before, they’ve had zero knowledge of the brand.

I opened YouTube on a smart TV and put the ThunderCats intro as well as some highlights from the classic show. Their reaction was priceless. They looked completely mesmerised and even a few minutes on, one boy was shouting “Hoooo”! Then me and a dad explained that a new show is coming up next year and loaded the review trailer…

Every single child at the party (about 20, ranging from 6 to 10 year olds) reacted negatively, calling it terrible, silly and ugly. I asked my friend to remain as neutral as possible when announcing that the show was getting a remake, so we didn’t influence them at all.

I think this is both exciting (the original series proving it’s timeless) and worrisome, since young viewers compared them and had similar reactions to us, who grew up with the series in the 80s. For me, it’s solid proof that the TCR reboot is a huge mistake.

Young viewers aren’t important im afraid. They’ll just accept what’s put in front on them

It’s about tarnishing such a great great show

Yes, they’ll watch anything. But it appears that once they compare it to the old show, they also think it’s terrible. At least according to the small demographic of my afore “experiment” and the limited preview material of course.

Additionally, as I previously mentioned, generation X and early generation Y are today’s parents and we grew up with ThunderCats. Most parents have control over what their children watch and considering the negative response, it’s most likely that they won’t be fond of the new series.

Oh, how I wish that TCR was just a spin-off series to a true remake of the original. I would be quite into it already…

Victor Courtright was born in 1984. So he is around the same age as most of the fan base that grew up with the original Thundercats.
For someone that grew up with the original series I really don’t understand why this would be the Thundercats show he would want to make.
If I was given the opportunity he has I would take the chance to follow the examples of Thundercats 80’s contemporaries and try something that not only appeals to the modern children audience but also to keep the fans of the 80’s and 2011 versions interested.

I would literally make another season in the style of 80’s Tcats, modern ideas be damned. It was successful then it’d be successful now. That’s what nostalgia is!

Others have encapsulated the collective sentiments of majority of the fans quite well. But my friend, in certain circumstances one does not always require a thorough and complete viewing of a project to know that it is not something that is well suited to the image of the brand that it is expounding upon in its own way. For example if you give Batman this same treatment, I guarantee it will be just has harshly received. Look at how they did Brave and the Bold, now that was a comedic take on Batman that was well balanced and that conveyed even in its teasers etc. that they had certain respect for the character and his mythology. We don’t find that to be the case here even by small margin.

Another point I rose in earlier post, this is the second handling of the Thundercats, the 2011 series ended prematurely leaving us fans starving for more and thus for a new take on Thundercats that will do it justice, so reinterpreting it as a comedy series is not something we wanted nor is appreciated because we care about the IP, and as others have said; Thundercats needs original fans to help it succeed, it’s not as well known. Making it into a wacky comedic series (not a parody) can possibly hurt future Thundercats projects, thus hurting us fans hopes of seeing something more fitting its full potential. If they really wanted to use an old cartoon for ideas, they could have gone with Camp Candy, just throwing it out there, and this style of toons might have suited that IP better and even adapted it in likeness of Gravity Falls.

I’ve no doubt the team has their talent and skills, I sincerely wish them (you too if you’re part of it) my very best, it’s just that in this case we want to see Thundercats given the treatment with respect that it deserves.

exactly, wolf. same goes for people who became fans very recently too and liked the more serious format.

The young viewers are very important, arguably more important than the adult viewers. It was because of the 2011 shows lack of appeal to younger viewers it was cancelled.
Especially since a part of the cancellation was because of the lack of toy sales.
I honestly can’t imagine children wanting toys based on these hideous designs.
There is very little toys and merchandise, especially action figures, based on those other awful animated Cartoon Network type shows.
I honestly thought WB would have learned their lesson after following the wonderful ‘‘Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated’’ with the utterly terrible ‘‘Be Cool Scooby Doo.’’ SDMI had great written episodes and a long over arcing story that really built the characters. Then they made BCSD which was a strange, poorly written, unfunny near Family Guy-esque comedy show with similar awful character designs.

I can’t agree with this. When i was a kid there were plenty of shows i wouldn’t watch because i thought they were rubbish. I’m also a kindergarten teacher, and i can tell you that although kids might watch some stuff we might consider terrible, they won’t just watch anything you pop them in front of.

hey, i’m a 90s kid and they had awful looking cartoons even when i was a child. I always preferred watching the cartoons that looked better. like the batman cartoon and the x-men and spiderman cartoon. back when fox aired cartoons during the weekends and weekdays I’d watch the nice looking cartoons. when fox changed their format and only had weekend shows and 4kids tv the ugly cartoons never garnered my attention.
Ugly cartoons don’t appeal to me. It’s also the one thing that’s keeping me from looking at gravity falls even though i know the series is actually pretty good.

I finally too the time to read these all 8 pages, so time to add my 2 cents.

Judging from those trailers, I don’t like it but I’m not sure I won’t watch it… 90% not though.

I won’t go as far as to call it a lack of respect to the original series or its fans, but what I can’t believe is that a group of about 20 full grown-ups really find it funny. I mean, TCR looks like if has been ordered to a bunch of trainee teens maing some kind of internship in TV producition or something, not adults.

Also, the animation is a joke and, even when I get the main aim are kids, I’m with those here who think kids are not brainless consumers and I do think a shpw like this shows a lack of respect towards them. Don’t they deserve something smart that challenge their minds and make them think about some important issues? I’ll be honest, I might or might know watch TCR but I’m a grown-up who has already lived and seen good things on TV, not just pure comedic nonsense like TCR appears to be. I mean, I feel like I could watch a show like this now because I have seen good stuff before and now I know what a good thing is and if I decide to wathc this is because I understand it’s a comedy show… but it feels like TV networks don’t think of that now and think kids just have to take whatever dud they throw at them.

Back on the day, TCs, MOTU, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Bravestar, even the “girlish” shows like She-Ra or Jem and the Hollograms, or the comedic ones like The Simpsons were smart shows with teachings and reflexions.

And what’s worst of all, it seems they have decided to make Tygra the comic relief this time, having him smashed by a rock or with Lion-O’s foot on his head (seems producers and writers haven’t got ovver their hate for him). :tygra

and he’s been made bald so they’ll probably make him this stuffy old man character who doesn’t know what fun is.
Hey, don’t even get me started on toilet-ra and his newspaper.

That part with Mumm-Ra on a toilet is kinda funny.
