I can’t say a thing. I wore a Changes ThunderCats football jersey to a wedding…and I was the Maid of Honor. (I mean the wedding was sort of kind of hockey themed, but an entire family of homeless Snarfs could live in it, I stuck out, and it remains the tackiest piece of clothing I proudly own. You know… I dream of wearing that glorious thing to my own funeral, that’ll show 'em)
Also, I’d like to add…I said in an earlier post that I didn’t like the look of the Thundercats Roar characters’ designs. I swear on The Eye that I wasn’t making jest of the writing in Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, or Steven Universe…these are great shows with interesting plots all their own.
That being said, and playing Devil’s Advocate with a few pieces missing…
I realize that animation houses have to cut corners at times to just finish a production, sometimes their hands are forced, and they have make hard decisions for the good of production. I’ll use it as an example again, The Legend of Korra, they had to cut corners and do a clip show in the middle of the last season, Book Four, Balance, so that they wouldn’t have to cut some of the production staff loose because of funding. Something that is unproven like ThunderCats Roar, a big honking digression from the source material, at least ascetically, and is a serious gamble, especially after the unwarranted failure of the 2011 restart. With that being said, I can see them not giving it the full Studio Mir/Ghibli treatment. They tried to and succeeded in producing some spectacular animation for the 2011 series, it just didn’t work out, sadly.
To my point I’ve been trying to get to about the characters’ look, and Lord have mercy on you and thank you for slogging through all that…
You know, if this were an absolutely new look for animation that no one never ever tried before, we could maybe try to give a pass and say, “Well, hey, this is different, I will reserve judgment..”
But…
Honest to goodness, every one of these franchises on Cartoon Network, Steven Universe, Adventure Time (to a lesser extent), and even Disney’s Gravity Falls… the makeup of the character art across the board on the “kiddie geared” channels are all the same. You can literally take a “human looking” character from any of these franchises, superimpose different looks like hair and facial features on them, and you’d have the same (genre?) as all the other shows.
What I’m saying, is yes, try something new, but let be something truly new.
So thank you again for your time, true believers, may the Eye protect you.
